    On the sunny shores of Floridas Gulf Coast, sits an astounding enormous abandoned resort. From its early iterations in the 1950's, it grew into a famous yet family oriented timeshare and hotel resort. It had also been the infamous hotel where George Bush stayed the night of September 10th, 2001. This, is The Colony.

    I uploaded a new video to my second channel showing a rare and vintage 1988 promo for The Colony. It's very interesting especially when comparing it to footage from just a few years ago. Check it out here - czcams.com/video/B6-NwJ5uWsg/video.html

    I remember visiting the Colony as a tween in 1999 from cold Massachusetts. I was OBSESSED with dolphins. Within about 2 hours of leaving Fort Myers airport me and my brother ran to the Colony beach after check-in…and BOOM there was a pod of dolphins just hanging out by the shore next to the pier. I had neglected to read the brochure in our suite that warned visitors against trying to swim and interact with the dolphins. I ran right into the ocean and swam with them. Then my brother rented one of their little catamaran sailboats, and the dolphins followed us! Magical times. I was just in Sarasota again, visiting family a few days ago and saw the beginnings of the Saint Regis condos/resort which is going where The Colony was. It looks like it’s going to be a very over-the-top, luxe resort with a massive winding pool.

  • @Corifto
    @Corifto Před 5 lety +5

    Thanks for the trip down memory lane. When I was a kid my stepdad was a purchasing manager so I spent many days around The Colony. There was a kid program that guests could have their kids attend to give them some free time.
    Along with all the restaurants there was a little bakery or cafe on the way to the main pool and they had the best croissants. My other stepdad was also employed in Maintenance. There was also a florist shop I can still smell and picture.
    I still live twenty minutes from the property and can remember everything like it was yesterday. As a kid I even helped make some of the employee nametags. They were gold rectangles that had The Colony logo on them, and one star for each 5 years of service. You would set their name up in an older style engraver and place the name tag in and run the machine.

    Hello Jake. Cool video on the colony. I've got a fascinating abandoned place for your consideration. If your ever make your way to Southern California, head out to the local desert at Victorville. There is an abandoned airforce base named George Airforce base. Within the base is whole neighborhood that is abandoned. People have posted videos of this place weather they are posted by urban explorers or paranormal investigators, the footage is pretty cool. There is even a guy who posted drone footage. Check out that video to get an idea as to how huge this abandon area is.

It's videos like this that sets you apart from other explorers. I love knowing the history of the places and businesses you video, one in particular is your video about Premier Cruise Lines. I live 10 miles from Port Canaveral and visit there regularly, but never knew about that company starting the cruise industry at the port, now the second largest cruise port in the world. Thank you for this. We stayed at The Colony many, many times throughout the late 1980's and early 1990's. We only stopped staying there when we bought into another resort just up the street called "Sea Place." We continued to visit the restaurant and bar for years and years. I loved Long Boat in the summer because all the older people had gone back up north. Lol. New Years at The Colony was always a treat as well, with the fireworks over the water and drinks on the beach. I remember your first video on this property and how many memories it brought back. There were shops that sold clothes and jewelry there. When you would eat lunch there would be models who walked around like a fashion show. If you liked something they were wearing, you could go to the shop and purchase it. It was all very high brow and taken seriously. I remember you always had to have a collar on your shirt to eat there, no t shirts were acceptable. At one point I had a "Colony" polo because I had to buy one to eat there. I look forward to visiting the new property once it is finished. It will be a great tale to tell. Thank you again for your walk down memory lane.

    I seem to vaguely remember something about a bunch of abandoned resorts in the Ozarks, possibly shut down due to serial arson or a killing spree or something like that.

    I stayed there in HS back in 2006. I remember how spacious the loft suite was. My family and I enjoyed the beach, but didn’t play any tennis. Even back then, we commented how it was very 80s looking. It was a nice vacation overall. Thank you for this video!

    Well done Jake and thank you for reaching out to a former guest of the Colony, I believe it does give the CZcams viewers an idea how it really was when she and her family would visit. Furthermore I could tell in her tone it was a place filled with fun and family style stuff to do. I have been to Longboat Key when I was kid but do not recall this hidden little gem called the Colony.My aunt and uncle had their yacht in Longboat Key in the mid to late 1980’s and I am certain we passed by it when we would go into town. It is good to see that the daughter of Murf was involved with the plans of the St.Regis Resort so that The Colony May have the family style feel plus a luxurious atmosphere. The upgrade that was needed and the condo owners got something in return too!

    Yesterday i accidentally stumbled upon one of the ABANDONED videos (thanks youtube suggestions) and watched a few. Then I went on a binge and started watching everything from ep1. Husband was like "let me finish few more games and we can go DS3", and I was "nah, no rush, i'm good for a few more hours, found some interesting stuff on youtube". I just finished with the last one and I have to say, THIS IS AWESOME. So detailed and informative. And I'm from Europe. Most of the videos was the first time I heard about those places and I was like WOW. Keep doing what you're doing! This is really interesting.

    This is fantastic quality stuff. A great documentary, well written and narrated. Your videos caught an amazing glimpse into this place as it was left. Sad to see, so much stuff left behind. You do truly amazing work!
    Here's something no one talks about on these demolitions: Hazardous materials.
    Television tubes contain lead. Appliances contain hazardous materials and refrigerators and HVAC units of that age would have R12 and R22 freon. Most of the time no care is taken to recover the freon before demolition. Lines are cut, appliances crushed and freon vents to atmosphere.

    hey this was my grandpa’s place & this deep dive really means a lot! very special place, & i was really lucky to get to spend countless weekends & like every holiday there for the first half of my life. impeccable vibe, like the grand budapest hotel with no dress code. they’d do fireworks on the 4th of july, for thanksgiving they’d have the local family of acrobats’ patriarch walk on a tightrope from the pier to the top of the high rise... great on any sunny day though. i don’t think a lot of people really knew that the beach was open to the public too, even though it said so right there on the sign. my grandparents were still living in the high rise for a while after the hotel closed, & my friend & i got to stay with them in one of the old suites in the crumbling castle, with the branded soaps & robes & everything... spooky stuff; wish i took more pictures. thx for the vid m8
