  • Not many industry altering companies go unnoticed these days, but there were a time back in the mid 1980's, where the official cruise line of Walt Disney World was booming. Their family cruise model changed everything and created giant competitors, including Disney. Lets look at the fascinating history of Premier Cruise Lines.

    Jake your videos are great. unsolicated advice for you interview episodes: If you are going to be cutting back to you in the interview you should probably also include yourself asking the questions too. It looks more like a conversation that way. also if the person you are interviewing is on a webcam, try and match their camera angle so it looks like you are talking to them, rather than just saying "yeah" into a void. I think it will improve the quality of these episodes greatly. Other than that, fantastic content as always!

    • @ddegn
      @ddegn Před 5 lety +29

      I think the cut scenes should be completely eliminated when using obvious webcam footage. These cuts made the video come across as really cheesy in my opinion. I stopped watching at two and half minutes in because I could no long take the video seriously.

    Thank you for producing this! I remember when they first began sending Walt Disney World characters on PCL cruises in 1986. In the early days of that program, Premier treated the characters like VIPs! At first we just went on either a four-day or five-day cruise on a rotating basis, then they started sending us for a week on two cruises in a row, four characters per ship. We got proper passenger rooms, not crew cabins, we got to eat the same meals as the guests for free, we got 50% off drinks, and we only worked about 20 hours in 8 days. It was like a paid vacation! I went on the Royale in 1984 for my high school class trip, then four times between 1986-1989 for Disney on the Royale, Oceanic, Atlantic and Majestic. I saw one of the Bid Red Boats in a scrapyard on a trip to Freeport in 2003 - made me sad.

    Having worked for Disney (film distrbution), I believe the Disney/Premier partnership was doomed to end. Disney likes full control and used the Premier partnership to test the waters of entering the expanding cruising business. That business is very capital intensive (ships) and ships require heavy maintenance--more than hotels or even some theme parks. Once Disney realized they could make money by using their world recognized name, going it alone in the cruise business was a given. However, the Premier partnership, as limited as it was, set Disney up to do their own thing. Also, I went on one of those Premier/Disney cruises, as well as the old Chandris and Dolphin lines. As with many things, only the biggest survive and to survive requires both innovation and expansion.

    • @welestgw
      @welestgw Před 5 lety +8

      Yeah, pretty normal with Disney. look at their streaming offering they're doing now and dropping Netflix. They like to control all their distribution channels and marketing, as they feel they can make more money that way.

    • @Ben-bb7mi
      @Ben-bb7mi Před 3 lety

      This is true but as a consumer I won't complain this. DCL's product at sea is as luxurious as what Celebrity offers but with the added family/Disney aspect of it. Premier using older ships just wouldn't be able to deliver what DCL delivers today. I mean one of the last ships they bought was the old Rotterdam and she was already 40 years old at the time Premier acquired her. That's not a ship that could fit modern entertainment needs.
      Disney was right to break the relationship once it was clear that Premier wasn't going to build new ships.

    ALSO - we rode on The Big Red Boat (The Oceanic) when I was 11 - and let me tell you... those age group thingies? Pretty rad. They did a great job keeping us busy so we didn't bug our parents. It still - to this date - is the happiest memory I have of my family before my brother died and our family fell apart.

      It was usually weather problems that prevented getting to "Treasure Cay". If it was too rough or windy the ship would blow around and run aground because the channel into Treasure Cay was so narrow and shallow.

    I went on The Big Red Boat in 1996 when I was in my teens. We took the Oceanic and went to Disney World afterwards. It was a lot of fun, and, even if it wasn't "the fanciest," it was still really fancy to me. It was certainly was quite the experience.
    Funnily enough, our Big Red Boat shirts were outdated only two years later. And it was frustrating to see the Disney cruise line open so soon afterwards. We wish we had waited, but we had no idea. Thanks for the great video!

    I enjoy reading and watching historical and just more modern history, but usually the only ones on CZcams are low quality and lack actual facts or taking known information and reading word for word from another video. The only good quality ones are one that belong too actual companies that produce it professionally and publish it on tv and youtube. Yours feels like I’m actually watching a good quality history channel, very well done and you certainly have a knack for keeping my attention and your execution of telling a bankrupt companies story. Well done, thank you. You’ve cured my boredom.

    I went on the Oceanic with the WB characters as a kid! They had stars on the doors which let us know where we couldn't go in the kids program. It was pretty amazing and we did a scavenger hunt too. I remember eating a pb&j under the sliding pool roof. Great memories!

    Its sad to see a trend investors seem to have. Yes, they want to make money, but they often screw themselves over along with the original company when they aren’t willing to invest in not only the companies, but the faces and CEOs that keep the company’s reputation and spirit alive.

I am seriously hooked, it is very rare that I can watch this many videos of one creator at a time. It truly shows how well put together your content is. I love how you show such a wide variety of footage while’st researching and retelling the history so well. You have definitely deserved a new subscriber and I hope you get millions more. Cheers!

      Simple. A whole major city based on one industry. Packard closed the ginormous plant in 1955 or so. Building was abandoned. Still a huge eyesore. THAT should have been your clue, if you lived there, to SELL and MOVE.
      Then, spoiled and way overpaid UAW workers purposely effed up cars and the Japanese were making way better cars that were more reliable and able to not use so much gas. GM closure in Flint, MI in the 1980's was in "Roger and Me," a doc. Filmmaker wanted him accountable for the plant closing in their best year. Basically to take all the money to Mexico where there's fewer problems with workers, I believe it was. See? There ya go :)
