The greatest shot in WNBA Finals history needs a deep rewind

- The WNBA began with a dynasty. The Houston Comets' hand-picked, star-studded roster immediately took over the league, winning the first two championships with ease.
In 1999, following the heartrending loss of a beloved teammate, Houston appeared on pace to do it yet again. But with seconds remaining in a surprisingly close Game 2, the New York Liberty's Teresa Weatherspoon had one shot -- one halfcourt prayer -- to at least delay the three-peat.
Welcome to a moment in history.

lol This was the first episode that I really didn’t know what was about to happen.
LOL
I did.
Deadass
Unfortunately that pretty accurately describes the WNBA’s interest level
I'm glad I didn't know what happened. This is how this series really shines. I thought they did a nice job building some interest in the WNBA. Way better than the NBA.
The Houston Comets dynasty deserves a documentary or a 30 for 30
They do for sure
Lol espn is already struggling for ratings
no
Bring back the Comets! I hope they're first on the list whenever the WNBA considers expanding again
No. No they don’t
Mike Breen is a Certified Legend. Man has been EVERYWHERE
kinda crazy he was basically the understudy for Marv Albert for almost 2 decades (Knicks' Radio, MSG Networks, NBC, TNT) before he got his main gig with ABC
As a basketball fan in Houston, I wish the comets were still a team, especially because the name goes with Space City, Astros, Rockets, Comets
New York and finishing second in 99, a truly devious pairing
at least the yankees won though
And Texas winning
Can't believe the Comets are not even a team anymore. From a dynasty to nothing :(
That still bothers me to this day
Yeah at least my Orlando Miracle weren't all that good to begin with.
MAJOR FACTS we need the Comets back in the w and the Sonics back in the nba
Look at that crowd in the video and look at the crowds now the only reason that the WNBA is still in business is because the NBA pays their bills.
The same thing with Detroit Shock! And both teams come from large sport market cities! 😢
I remembered that game. I was living in the Bronx at the time before moving to Queens a few weeks later. That was a spectacular shot. That was the same that the Knicks, and Yankees made to the championship in their perspective sport league in 1999. Good times in New York sports. Thanks for the video👍🏿🏀
Good times man good times
Those were the times man
The Liberty at the Garden was a moment. It's one of those "have to be there" moments. I'm glad that they got back to BK, but it ain't the same.
@@SportsFan-vq9kk oh yeah.
@@brifromnyc4271 I know. The 90s were the best of times. The Knicks were relevant every year, Yankees won the world series 3 times to end the decade, the Giants won a superbowl(1991), rangers won a Stanley cup, the Jets AFC championship game, the liberty went to the finals twice. Good times in NYC.
Rewinder: Lewis Hamilton's last second, last lap, championship winning pass needs a deep rewind.
I’ll give you my vote for that!
Exactly. There are so many huge global sports (F1, cricket, rugby, swimming, boxing- to name a few) that SB has almost entirely ignored. Giving the WNBA coverage before sports like these is a joke, not to mention bad business in terms of a guaranteed low view count. I don’t get it.
not really, the SB nation is an american publication, of course they’re going to be mostly interested in baseball, basketball & football.
@@marc981337 NFL, MLB,, and the NBA I get. But the NHL, MLS, PGA, LPGA, APT (men’s and women’s), NCAA [football, basketball (men’s and women’s), baseball], Olympic teams, NASCAR, Indy Car, and X Games are all American sports that have much bigger followings than WNBA. The WNBA is possibly the only sports league that I’ve never met a person who’s ever watched even a single game from start to finish.
@@YogSoth now you have met someone who watched more than a single game from start to finish from the wnba!
RIP Kim Perrot. No question this championship by the Comets was indeed dedicated to her kinda similar to the Lakers winning the 2020 title in dedication to the late Laker great Kobe Bryant.
A little weird not hearing Mike Breen say “BANG!” when the shot went in lol.
Right!!
I love the comments talking about how a last second buzzer beater from half court doesn't qualify for a rewinder video. It obviously does, because its a pivotal moment in sports history, is extremely dramatic(as buzzer beater shots tend to be), AND, while not an absolute requirement for a rewinder, it a moment a lot of us, myself included, haven't seen before.
People can be as salty as they want in the comments, but as long as the stories are actually interesting(like this one)...keep 'em coming.
I'm just salty that this highlight gets shown over and over when Houston overall won the championship.
And fast forward to the day the WNBA's original dynasty is folded and no more while this shot gets played on repeat over and over.
Yes I'm a salty comet's fan
Well I'm glad that there are still people with decency and common sense in the world
The wnba hardly qualifies as a sports league and no one pays attention to it
@@BugOnAChip truth

I was at the game as an 8-year old and to be honest, when I saw the pile up, I thought the Liberty were fighting Teresa for missing the shot. A heartbreaking moment, but only temporary as they did win the next day. The Comets were the first WNBA dynasty. They were like WNBA’s version of the Bulls. Hope to see them back.
"They were like WNBA’s version of the Bulls. " ha ha ha ha
I would have watched WNBA if they fought people for missing shots.

I remember seeing this shot mentioned on your Untitled piece on Becky Hammon, Secret Base. Can't believe I've never heard of this shot prior to that Untitled video. Excited for this and interested in WNBA history especially this and that incredible Game 5 between the Lynx and Sparks in 2016.
This and the Sparks vs Lynx series was good to watch
I never realized their finals used to be best-of-three. I always thought it was a five game series at that level, and wondered why this game two shot was one of the most clutch moments in the league's history. Makes a lot more sense now.

Always appreciate that Seth spotlights all the cool stuff going on in the WNBA. He’s done it across a number of different series
Seth is AMAZING
They also have AMAZING Beef. Basketball beef is always the best because it's so personal, but WNBA Beef is great because they're still willing to kill one another for the sport despite not being valued as much as the should be. When you have to go play in Russia during the off-season because your league won't pay you enough and you're still willing to yank a lady's ponytail off, you've gone beyond love of the game.

I’ll never forget my mom and uncle screaming no at the tv after that shot. Still, a decisive game 3 was probably the best way for that season to cap off for Houston.
Watching this right before heading to see my Liberty in game 1 of the semifinals. Thank you for this wonderful video and all the context it provided to an already amazing moment in sports history.
Always love Seth with the W love❤️
Thank you so much. I was a huge Houston Comet's fan & my MJ was Cynthia Cooper. That was a great series & no one thought that shot was going in.
Cooper is the goat 🐐
I miss this team. Had the town in the palm of their hands. RIP Kim Perrot!!
This was amazing, I remember this!!!! The Comets dynasty made me a fan
There’s something about the aesthetic of early years of the WNBA that makes me interested in the league.
The 90s were a…”colorful” decade for the NBA to say the least
It's weird too. Like it seemed the wnba as a league was much more respectable in the 90s then it is now.
I remember being excited when the players would come to my school. I think the league is just marketed poorly.
They need to lower the Nets and stop trying to be the NBA. Be their own brand
@@MikeBNumba6 at the time it was simply marketed better. You had more commercials on tv, a lot of the games were nationally televised, the names in the league were already established stars grouped with up and comers. Collegiate womens basketball now has not only been poorly marketed, but so dominated by one team that its difficult to find a number of talent. Add to that the small markets that some of these teams are in and you get a league that is seemingly holding on via big brothers money. Also not helping was that your 1st big dynasty had on, sideline and off court issues....
@@hardieharrharr all good points. I didn't even think about Uconn dominating.
I do remember when Tennessee was good I used to be into women's college basketball a little more
@@MikeBNumba6 see? And think about it, can you name another team? Any stars from other colleges? Unless you truly followed Women’s college bb you couldn’t. On the men’s side, you didn’t have to follow anything. ESPN and CBS did it all for you in the months of February and March.
I find it really interesting how Weatherspoon had been conditioned to be an assist machine so much that she actively refused to try shots herself. I would think that it's just human nature that once you possess the thing that gets thrown into the hoop for points, your first instinct would be to throw it into the hoop for points. Guess not!
That’s how my rec league coaches conditioned me 🤣 I rn the pick and roll a ton and since there’s no scouting I racked up assists
well you can ask ben simmons about that.
It's almost like people can become professional players for reasons other than good shooting. It's almost like sometimes, you need people who are good at catching the ball if the good shooters miss, and people who can stay really close to the shooters to make harder for them to shoot, and people who can keep track of what everybody is going to do on the court so they can throw the ball at those players when they are ready to throw the ball at the hoop in an easier way than you can in that moment. Crazy, I know...
@@B3Band man that's a whole lotta reading just to get to your overall point that "simple assist on a mundane layup requires a lotta ppl playing roles they specialize in"
Well to be fair, this was late 90s basketball. Weren’t that many score first point guards back then like it is now.
Rewinders are always so well made it makes me care about every sport, I liked the womens college basketball video about Sue Bird I thnk, this is great too
Houston Comets don’t get the recognition they deserve, even from the WNBA itself
because womens basketball is objectively garbage
🙄

Sinclair's broken nose free kick or her press conference red card would be awesome

Suggestion for a deep rewind video: The 2003 Detroit Shock Championship
worst to first to champions
I really suspect the league has been anti-Detroit for years. I don't know exactly why though.
Detroit is always treated poorly by the sports media (and really the media overall). The 2004 Pistons championship run against the Lakers literally starts with the announcers betting if LA is going to sweep this or if they might need 5 games to do it. I don't think I need to discuss how much the refs hate Detroit, particularly the Lions. Detroit vs. Everyone is a thing for a reason.
@@LifeUntilLove True dat.

I miss the Comets
I requested this a year ago. 👍
My sister is Kym Hampton and I was sitting in that game. The camera shot seems like it was from my seat. I remember the final shot seemed like it was in slow motion and then all hell broke loose and Kym looks like she didn't know they had won the game. Too funny.
RIP Kim Perrot!! A Houston legend!! Raise the roof!! We'll always love you chick!!
I remember watching this game as a little kid. I went crazy when Weatherspoon hit that shot.
I was a Houston Comets fan from the beginning and in 1999 i was starting my first year of college out of state when this game took place. I recorded the game on my roommate's VCR and watched it back without spoilers (though my roommate did make some vague ominous comment beforehand). While the loss was shocking, looking back I give credit to T-Spoon for playing until the buzzer sounded and creating a lasting image for the ages. Weatherspoon asked the Comets Big 3 to present her in the Hall of fame a few years ago which says a lot about the love and respect they have for each other. Great thorough history of this moment by you guys and thank you so much for continuing to highlight women's basketball!
Can we get a docu about the life and career of Cynthia Cooper? She's as close to MJ as the WNBA and women's basketball may ja e ever had. She def deserves her flowers.
This is the closest I've come to watching a WNBA game. Thanks
Excellent Rewinder video by Secret Base, as always. Especially about a great moment that deserves so much more recognition. What a classic shot by Teresa Weatherspoon. One question, though: When will you PLEASE do a video about Magic Johnson's winning hook shot against the Boston Celtics in Game 4 of the 1987 NBA Finals???
Looks like you got your wish!
I really like these lesser known stories in sports. It's great to see deep rewinds on NBA Championships and games that had millions of viewers, but these more obscure stories show depth and history into teams/moments that didn't get much coverage when these games originally aired.
I was watching that game live with my dad. It was crazy!
SB really just schooled me in some WBNA and I was entertained. Well Played.

Why couldn't this had been a simple david vs. goliath, instead I have to root for both sides.
This was a GREAT ep!
Saw this Game Live on TV...The Original Comets were 🔥🔥🔥🔥
I need to see a deep rewind on Ben Simmons passing up a wide open dunk in game 7 against the Hawks
The worst part about the WNBA is the short playoff series. Although, I love the bonkers multiple round single game knockouts. Brings delightful chaos before letting me enjoy Sun vs Sky.
Weatherspoon is currently an assistant coach for the Pelicans
Welcome to a moment in history
If this was a Game 3, this shot would have been the Greatest Basketball Shot of All Time!
Calm down there’s a lot of competition for that title. But I do love a good hot take lmao
@@TheProdigy_916 true BUT, last game of the finals, over half-court shot by an an aging basketball player? It's up there tbh
Yes, it would. The NBA Finals have a tying shot (Gar Heard in 1976 game 5) that didn't help, but has never produced this kind of a game winner.
Gordon Hayward came agonizingly close in the NCAA finals, but alas...
As a Suns fan i know exactly what you are talking about@@KD555
Wow, I never knew the WNBA pulled a WWE style booking their own teams and who gets to go there. Crazy.
It's not that odd knowing how the NBA originally got started. For the first 20 or so years of the league, there was something called the territorial draft, where team could claim first dibs on players in their market.
The Comets also got lucky in that Tina Thompson 1) had an outside shot and 2) was willing to play proto-Chris Bosh to the established vets. While Tina Thompson wasn't obviously a bum, no one foresaw how players could fit together outside of a college context. USC wasn't at its peak at the time, so only the cognoscenti could have seen that coming.
Idea for a deep rewind: The 1992 NASCAR finale at Atlanta. Richard Petty's last race, Jeff Gordon's 1st race, multiple drivers with a chance to win the Winston Cup title, and the title being won by an underdog owner/driver by leading exactly one more lap in the race than Bill Elliott.
So glad you keep going deep on the WNBA!
Huge lynx fan here, as soon as I saw the title I was SURE we were going to see the 2016 Game 5 buzzer beater 😭 I’ve never walked silently with so many people as when we left a sold out crowd that night.

Thanks for the video. Shout out to all the fantastic players in the game back then. Shout out to the Comets. Legendary. And shout out to my Memphis Tiger, Tamika Whitmore from the NY Liberty. A fantastic basketball player. An even better person.
That truly was one amazing, remarkable shot like you'll hardly ever see, which you never would have believed would have possibly gone in. That being even if it was kind of quickly forgotten, due to it only delaying the inevitable, and sadly didn't result in a championship for the Liberty when the Comets regrouped, and won Game #3 with ease. This was also when the WNBA was sort of an interesting novelty which was worth a look, and had some fun players to watch. The fact that the crowds at these games had a sold out, NBA type atmosphere really spoke volume too, even if many fans soon began to lose interest in it not too long afterwards it seemed though.
I always say ‘When the Comets died, so did the WNBA’
@@cmurphy0707 Pretty much, considering they were the WNBA's flagship franchise at first, and were an unstoppable force back in the day also.

Mike not calling the biggest Bang of his life on that is a tragedy, maybe this was the moment he realized he needed a signature callout for big shots
