Shaq and Olajuwon’s Game 1 battle in the 1995 NBA Finals deserves a deep rewind

  • The 1995 Finals had a ton of star power - a very young Shaq and Penny for the top seeded Orlando Magic, Hakeem and Drexler having a mini Phi Slama Jama reunion in Houston, and Horace Grant's extremely awesome rec specs. And while the series didn't deliver as a whole, Game 1 was a roller coaster, if a roller coaster could go off the tracks because of four missed free throws in a row.

      During three or four years in the early and mid-90s, Hakeem was about as good as Kareem was for the first 21 years (1967-87) of his UCLA and NBA career. So I ´d have to take Kareem for his much longer period of sustained dominance, much as I love Hakeem.

    5:43 - So fun story: in his 1995 autobiography _Living The Dream,_ Olajuwon recalled that Portland was so desperate for a center that they offered the Rockets Clyde Drexler _and_ their #2 pick in that '84 draft for Ralph Sampson. So Houston would've had the #1 and #2 picks that year, probably netting them Olajuwon, Drexler _and_ Michael Jordan, had they accepted the trade. Obviously they didn't accept, but think about the decade that super-team could've had.

    The 1995 Rockets might’ve had the greatest playoff run in NBA history, first off they’re the only 6 seed to win the title, they won all 4 series without a homecourt advantage, and beat 4 50 win teams en route to winning it, and also had to go through 5 elimination games in the first 2 rounds of the playoffs and 3 elimination games in one series. I don’t think any team in the NBA past or present is going to top that.

    My second season of watching the NBA I was 18 years old and fully on the Shaq, Penny, Magic train.... In the UK I recorded every game at 2am and would watch in the morning before college...
    The season before was my first introduction to the NBA and i remember rooting for the Knicks in the finals against the rockets, so in the 95 finals to see the rockets again I knew how tough they were...
    I remember going crazy in the first half as the magic absolutely destroyed the rockets, running them off the floor, Shaq unstoppable inside and 3D and nick Anderson burying 3s from outside...
    Then getting the nerves as the rockets came back, they really were a team you could hate with Mario Ellie, Sam cassell and Kenny Smith (sorry Kenny) all being trash talkers ...
    Heart was in my mouth in the final minutes of regular time with Houston clawing all the way back but once Orlando was up and got fouled to go to the line, I could breath a sigh of relief.. Nick Anderson only has to hit one free throw... Easy right?
    Safe to say, the soul was most definitely sucked out of the magic going into overtime, they gave it their best but again in the final moments the rockets killed them again... And that, was the end of the finals... And of that magic team...
    Sad to think how good they could've been if Shaq stayed, if penny stayed healthy that starting 5 was so good with Horace Grant giving steel and experience along with a solid jump shot from 15, Anderson and Scott deadly from outside and Shaq and Penny leading the team... In hindsight they would've been going against the Bulls anyway so....😁

      @K H Uh...
      I don't see "overtime" mentioned anywhere, so I feel like you've fired in a bit for reasons I cannot quite fathom.
      Alas, there is, if not "overtime", in association football a term called "extra time", which gets wheeled out in knockout competitions between regulation time and the penalty shoot-out.
      I would argue that this counts as a de facto sort of overtime, even if it's not called that.
      Additionally, in many languages, the added time at the end of halves are referred to as "overtime", so the truth in your statement really depends on what language you speak as well.
      All in all, I do not appreciate your tone. I do not understand where you got the "overtime" thing from, as I did not mention it. And thirdly, football do add extra time in knockout competitions when a winner MUST be found. Overtime and extra time are fundamentally the same thing.
      Oh, and fourthly: The game I was asking about has extra time. Go search for the Miracle of Istanbul on wikipedia or YT or whatever. Make some research before firing in, eh?
      Peace out.
