Shaq and Olajuwon’s Game 1 battle in the 1995 NBA Finals deserves a deep rewind

- The 1995 Finals had a ton of star power - a very young Shaq and Penny for the top seeded Orlando Magic, Hakeem and Drexler having a mini Phi Slama Jama reunion in Houston, and Horace Grant's extremely awesome rec specs. And while the series didn't deliver as a whole, Game 1 was a roller coaster, if a roller coaster could go off the tracks because of four missed free throws in a row.

It's painful how despite winning 8 straight championships, Jordan and Olajuwon never met in the Finals.
Blame Stockton.
lol true
One of the biggest what ifs ever
Bryan Turner Blame Charles for his shitty close out. Too fat and lazy, why he never won a ring
Basketball would've been downhill from then on!
Hakeem really has a case for being the greatest Center of alltime. It's also really amazing that despite the fact that we passed on MJ no one really thinks we made a mistake Thats how good he was
People aren't saying that because Hakeem is an all time great
BiasedRocketsFan 34 that has always been Hakeems biggest accolade to me. Somehow he was drafted before the GOAT and it wasn’t a mistake. To me Hakeem is just in another tier of ability, you can’t tell me anyone is actually better than him at basketball. His moves are insane
Hakeem did beat some other all time great centers in his chip runs like Ewing, Robinson, and young shaq
During three or four years in the early and mid-90s, Hakeem was about as good as Kareem was for the first 21 years (1967-87) of his UCLA and NBA career. So I ´d have to take Kareem for his much longer period of sustained dominance, much as I love Hakeem.
Hakeem is most definitely the most complete center ever. Not only could he score and do it efficiently, MVP, DPOY, he’s Leads the NBA in blocks and is in the top 10 in steals, as a CENTER and had a quadruple double! In my opinion you could argue he’s the greatest center of all time.
If I was Kenny I would remind Shaq of that three every day at TNT
good thing he's not petty like shaq reminding Charles that he never won a ring.
Every
Single
Day
Kenny Smith's huge three is a reminder sometimes that superstars don't get all the credit.
Shaq would let that slide and tell him he got more rings
@@IXIKAYAKOxSAEKIIXI and Kenny could say, "Not against the Rockets!" 😂
Watched the 30 for 30 abut the magic, and man I feel terrible for Nick Anderson. The guy never got over those free throws
Game 1 basically killed his career
His free throw percentage nearly halved... Thats ridiculous
weird, because it was obvious he was rushing all those attempts because he knew he just needed 1
Coach should've called TO and reset the situation so the bum could get his head back into it. They were out home too, . Magix is a crap team
70% FT shooter, and dropped to only 40% 2 years after this, it really hurt him and stuck with him.
I also love how Robert Horry defeated the Spurs in Game 1 with a 3 pointer then helped them in a Game 5 over a decade later
He also helped the spurs in 2003 😂
Big shot Bob.... Legend
In this video he crushed Shaq's Magic. 5 years later he was in Los Angeles helping Shaq to three straight NBA championships. Big shot Bob.
Ol big shot Bob👌
It was actually a 2.
Imagine missing 4 straight free throws; it’d be hard to recover from that
Lmao he choked like a dog
LeBron approves this message.
A situation like this is lebrons ultimate nightmare.
Galland Yeah its almost is if Lebron didnt make a free throw in game 7 in 2016 to put the game out of reach....
@@Poopopotamusgaming
Ya one out of two that went in about as close as it gets. Look i'm not a lebron hater, but if you know anything about him it's that he hates taking late game free throws.
5:43 - So fun story: in his 1995 autobiography _Living The Dream,_ Olajuwon recalled that Portland was so desperate for a center that they offered the Rockets Clyde Drexler _and_ their #2 pick in that '84 draft for Ralph Sampson. So Houston would've had the #1 and #2 picks that year, probably netting them Olajuwon, Drexler _and_ Michael Jordan, had they accepted the trade. Obviously they didn't accept, but think about the decade that super-team could've had.
One of the thoughts going around was "no point drafting Jordan if you've got Drexler" since their style of play is similar. Man that's stupid. Get the best players, it'll work out
The mind boggles. Would’ve been the best defensive team ever just with those three alone!
you serious? never heard that one
Goddamn
That woulda been another injury-risk center at Blazers' disposal.
Walton, Bowie, Sabonis, Oden, the list goes on...
Like shaq on open court on the missed free throws:
*its not even about that, its about kenny walkin around like hes a legend now." 😂😂😂
goofy pettiness lmao
Hidden Secrets haha not even one?!!
I'm dieing laughing
Lol Kenny acting like he's a legend was hilarious by Shaq
They got swept how in hell did the conversation come around missing free throws in only one single game?
The 1995 Rockets might’ve had the greatest playoff run in NBA history, first off they’re the only 6 seed to win the title, they won all 4 series without a homecourt advantage, and beat 4 50 win teams en route to winning it, and also had to go through 5 elimination games in the first 2 rounds of the playoffs and 3 elimination games in one series. I don’t think any team in the NBA past or present is going to top that.
The reason I'm a rockets fan^
Mavs' 2011 run was the greatest of all time but I get what you're saying.
@Kevin Chen I really necessarily wouldn't say beating Orlando undercuts Houston's accomplishment because Orlando had the best record in the league at the time
Ammar Napata Not only that, the Magic had just come off of defeating the Bulls in the Conference finals.
@Kevin Chen busted kobe? Cp3? They didnt face the Hornets, those lakers were coming off 3 straight finals apperances
"...but with the second pick the Trail Blazers selected Sam Bowie so it worked out for all parties involved."
Masterful troll.
Since they wouldn't have taken Jordan, because they had Drexler, they would have been well served to take Sir Charles.
@@kosmicwizard well not really bc charles never meshed with other stars. But at least John Stockton lol
Hakeem Olajuwon is one of the most underrated legends in NBA history. He should be in anyone's top 10 list.
Probably the best two-way player of all time. Probably the only center that could guard 1-5 at an elite level.
most skilled and best footwork of any big
Is there even any center except maybe Chamberlain who can compare?
Nils Jäger Wilt in his prime didn’t play with the level of competition that Hakeem played.
@@blank-vj1mc I said "maybe".
Btw I don't think one should hold playing in a relatively weak era against any player. I mean just because competition is bad doesn't mean you are.
But honestley, Chamberlain is more or less the only of the really great centers, Hakeem never played against because of the huge age difference. All the other great centers played in the 80s or 90s and thus, Kareem faced them. No competition.
I love you amish Shia Lebouf!
Elonkelon oof
More like Al Qaeda Jason Lee in my opinion. Anyway, nice walk down the memory lane, those 90's games kept us awake all night long here in Croatia. And Hakeem was indeed the Dream, my all time favorite player.
Anyone else get happy whenever a Rewinder notification pops up on their phone?
Yes
Yes
Yea...especially as a Rockets fan
I still think Hakeem's underrated by most people. My dad's Nigerian and Hakeem's his favourite player so maybe I'm biased lol but IMO he's the most SKILLED Center of all time. I think everyone knows about the quadruple double but he also has the most five-by-fives in NBA history. Most skilled player at his position ever - Top 10 player of all time in my book
Dan Castle Wilt is not better than Hakeem.
Dan Castle He said most skilled, he never said anything about Hakeem being better than anyone so your point is invalid. Who did Wilt play against that was talented? I’d like to know
Ade11798 A Hakeem and Kareem are the most skilled for me and I think they’re very close. Other than that, it’s touch to make an argument for anyone else.
Dan Castle Yes,he did play against less competition.Im not gonna go with the whole “Wilt played against 6’6 white boy plumbers” argument.Rather,I’ll name a few names.Shaquille O’Neal,Patrick Ewing,David Robinson,Kevin Mchale,Robert Parish,An older (but still an ass kicker) Kareem Abdul Jabbar,Shawn Kemp,Charles Barkley,Dennis Rodman,Alex English,Moses Malone.And those are the Big Men I can name off the top of my head.There were also guys like Isiah Thomas,Michael Jordan,Penny Hardaway,Reggie Miller,Gary Payton,Magic Johnson,Larry Bird,Dan Issel,James Worthy,Clyde Drexler,Joe Dumars,Sidney Moncrief,Scottie Pippen,Julius Erving.
@Dan Castle the less competition argument is weak. While there was less teams in the 50s and 60s, it meant that 9 team were loaded with the top 100 players of the time, compared to the 80s and 90s, where 26 teams means great talent is spread out, and talent that wouldn't have made rosters in the past were no making rosters.
So hard listening to the first 5 minutes of this video talk about Nick Anderson knowing what's coming
Damn right, and straight
Shows you how much confidence has to do with the game. I guess everything else too
Imagine a fusion between these players at their prime, how awesome that would be... Shakeem O'nealajuwon!!! My God!!!!
*As a magic fan....This is Textbook Orlando magic basketball* 💔
Consider yourself lucky, my team doesn't exist anymore and we have to watch CZcams videos of the old days to see if we show up like at 7:08
Ellis Guerrero I’ll never forget those fur missed free throws. I was in a barbershop at like 10 years old.
I ended up going to UCF and worked for the Magic so the history stings a little even for me.
David Benoit yeah it's always a single play that ruins our achievements like that missed Courtney Lee layup in game 2 that could've tied the series and changed the momentum....it's kind of sad we always go through a stretch were we go on a streak and then loose our way out of the playoffs. We also develop young players and once they leave this franchise they become great players in other systems.
Sucks to be a magic fan, almost as bad as being a knicks fan
Do Hakeem's destruction of the Admiral
Yesss, please
destruction is an understatement
Syrup Wizard He sonned That man 💀💀💀
>Do Hakeem's destruction of the Admiral
Context or reading material for someone not from USA please?
joe cool he made David Robinson look foolish when they played each other in the playoffs.
Im too young to have seen Hakeem play but from those 2 championship run he's legendary
It boggles my mind to this day that Anderson missed FOUR STRAIGHT FREE THROWS. Lol yea that's has to be a career ender
Greg Mac not just career ending, after that he was never the same himself lol. He couldn’t hit a FT to save his life after that. His %s went down like crazy
That was a horrible thing to watch unfold, in the moment.
I was watching that game, still pissed about the Supes' losing in the 1st round for the second straight season (nevermind that the 93-94 and 94-95 Supersonics WERE the most talented team in the NBA, and owned the Rockets and Magic during the stretch of time 10/92 - 6/96...), and seeing Nick Anderson struggle like that instantly made me forget about the pain I was feeling... Nick wasn't a terrible shooter from the free throw line, but in that moment his stats were of little significance...
It seriously got into his head. He never really got over those free throws.
@@dflacko6336 i knew that was too good to be true, just looked up his stats, turns out his FT was pretty much the same the next season, it only dropped the season after that.
I watched itlive he was never thesame after that it really did mess his career up
The 1984 draft is the greatest draft ever.. Hall of Famers left and right..
03 is right there as well
1996 better
I still can't believe that the Magic did not even win a game in this NBA Finals. I was really disappointed because I thought the Magic were going to be the NBA Champs. Fortunately for us lakers fans, this result helped us get Shaq
Los Lakers en Español - NBA en Español then people will say “bulls would have kicked the rockets ass.” Failing to realize he played in the playoffs in 95 and lost in 6 games
@@joerk992 Nah, Jordan was rusty af back in '95. He and the bulls dominated the next year though
@@LakersEnEspanol he dropped 55 on his 5th game back, hows that rusty??
A really weird situation where the hype didnt live up to the talent.
@@LakersEnEspanol he averaged 27-7-5 in the regular season and had better playoff stats in just about every category than he did the next season (after the Bulls went 72-10). He wasn't rusty, that shit's a myth.
damn the writers of the Anniston Star were savages: "rotund Charles Barkley of Auburn"
Charles was 6'4, 300+ lbs. Moses Malone just called him fat and lazy.
The round mound of rebound baby!
I remember watching this series in my early twenties here in the Philippines. Hakeem Olajuwon was a beast with his pivot moves, and that Nick Anderson four missed free throws -- a crucial turning point which the Magic never recovered from -- was unforgettable.
i swear, this series is one of the best things on all of youtube
Nick Anderson's FT percentage each season after the finals loss: 40.4%, 63.8%, 61.1%, 48.7% 😔
Dawning could be worse though, but yeah thats sad what happened to nick anderson in that series
I think that series really hurt him like emotionally and all cause even people knew him said wasn't the same....That's crazy how one event can change u
I love how I have to pause most of these videos to explore these great tangents that you bring up during the show. Looking at 1984 draft now. Thanks for putting these out :)

Sooooo old man. Buy a new joke will ya
My second season of watching the NBA I was 18 years old and fully on the Shaq, Penny, Magic train.... In the UK I recorded every game at 2am and would watch in the morning before college...
The season before was my first introduction to the NBA and i remember rooting for the Knicks in the finals against the rockets, so in the 95 finals to see the rockets again I knew how tough they were...
I remember going crazy in the first half as the magic absolutely destroyed the rockets, running them off the floor, Shaq unstoppable inside and 3D and nick Anderson burying 3s from outside...
Then getting the nerves as the rockets came back, they really were a team you could hate with Mario Ellie, Sam cassell and Kenny Smith (sorry Kenny) all being trash talkers ...
Heart was in my mouth in the final minutes of regular time with Houston clawing all the way back but once Orlando was up and got fouled to go to the line, I could breath a sigh of relief.. Nick Anderson only has to hit one free throw... Easy right?
Safe to say, the soul was most definitely sucked out of the magic going into overtime, they gave it their best but again in the final moments the rockets killed them again... And that, was the end of the finals... And of that magic team...
Sad to think how good they could've been if Shaq stayed, if penny stayed healthy that starting 5 was so good with Horace Grant giving steel and experience along with a solid jump shot from 15, Anderson and Scott deadly from outside and Shaq and Penny leading the team... In hindsight they would've been going against the Bulls anyway so....😁
This is excellent storytelling! Brings back all of the right details and context to get you up to speed and aware of the situation. I watched these games but it was long ago and this really brought all of the setting back to mind! Earned a subscribe for that!! Thanks.
I had never heard of Phi Slamma Jamma. That's absolutely amazing.
Keith Shannon gotta watch survive and advance 30for30, truly incredible
Hakeem EMBARRASED Shaq In that series. Completely outclassed in every sense of the way. The Dream was just a maestro in the post
And sadly, the nerds running front offices today wouldn't even consider him now.
Threes are all that matter today.
Thanks, analytics!
Shaq had a better game 1. More pts, and wayyyy more rebs.
Mike Tank Brown ll no actually Hakeem had 31 points in that game. He had 29 before the game winning tip in. Even the guy said it in the video. SB Nation just screwed up when they showed the comparison graphic. Here’s the box score of that game. www.basketball-reference.com/boxscores/199506070ORL.html
Mike Tank Brown ll listen for it again 9:15
@@tank100286 HAkeem - 31, Shaq - 26. Shaq had more rebs in this game, but Hakeem had the most important one. I've seen whole series live in 1995 - Hakeem got his points and other stats in IMPORTANT moments, while Shaq mostly in garbage time. Numbers dont tell everything.
gimme prime Olajuwon over prime Shaq ANYDAY!
DPOY and MVP in the SAME year!
No bruh dream was better than Shaq for 2yrs and that was it Shaq took over becoming 2 best until MJ retired again
@@ernestboykin3rd706 Lol Hakeem was better till about his mid 30s. It’s almost like you didn’t read his comment he said his prime. Hakeem was was drafted same year as Jordan. Yeah of course Shaq was recently better than Hakeem. It’s called logic
That's a tight fight there. I'm inclined to agree with you though because dream was a terror on defense. He could defend the basket the passing lanes and the wing. Shaq was a good defender too quiet as kept. Shaq wasn't always focused but when his back was against the wall or he was pissed that dude was completely unstoppable.
But for real... You guys are always putting up good material in all of your video series... Thanks for all you do for us "Sports History nerds" 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾

Do a rewinder on the 2014 LA Kings since they were down 0-3 in the first round, it took them 7 games in every series (except for the finals) and they won the cup in Overtime.

I’ve been waiting for this video to drop 🔥🔥🔥
These Rockets derailed 2 player's career's Nick Anderson and John Starks
Nah starks still was good after the 94 finals
As I recall, Houston's shooters were open because ORL had to double on Hakeem in the paint. He would just kick out to the arc and Kenny and the other guards were open. Hakeem handled Shaq solo at the other end, which was a huge difference in the series later on.
Kenny Smith and Sam Cassel !!
This is THE PERFECT SERIES for sports, the amount of clutch moments to rewind is endless.
I suggested this a while back and low and behold it happened and it's just as good as I thought it would be!
I’m still hurting at age 32 oh my Magic....

9:15 minor editing error, narrator says Olajuwon is sitting at 29 points, but the text in the video says 20 points
Great analysis thanks!

You show Hakeem with 20 points but say "29". Looks like a typo.

These analyses are absolutely brilliant. Well done SB Nation. Hakeem the best big man of all time!
Love these rewinder videos!! They are very informative!
This seems like a Rewinder/Beef History crossover episode
Shawn McClurg who’s the beef? Nick Anderson Vs. Free throws?
What about the 1991 World Series? The whole series was incredible, with arguably the best game 7 of a series to exist. Not to mention the previous game 6. Plus, there were many games decided by a single run, and many to go into extra innings.
Yes as a Braves fan it baffles me that Bobby took out Smoltz for a reliever who was owned by Kirby Puckett and history happened.
Outstanding video!!!
Awesome video. The narration was actually really good!
Great video! Really well done. I watched Hakeem’s entire career, year after year and this seems like yesterday. Too bad we didn’t meet the Bulls though. That would have been one for the ages. And yeah, we could have beat them, just like Orlando did.
6-2 for jordan. I'm sure you remember the bs call in 93 vs the Spurs that gave home court to Seattle. Then the bs 5th foul on Hakeem in game 7. All after Jordan says I'm glad they cant get out of the west. I don't think we cant beat these guys. 5-1 was very close.
Since March Madness is coming up you guys should do the Christian Laettner buzzer beater vs. Kentucky
i don't wanna :(
Please let that one happen. Not a Duke fan, but Kentucky thought they’d already won.
amazing work. Congrats. and thanks.
Amazing as always.
Quit making Kenny Smith seem cool
He's pretty cool. Was funny in the lockers and actually knocked down pretty big shots.

Ill never forget those days. Thats what made me proud to be a Rockets fan. Great analysis!
95 playoffs were so awesome so many series went the distance before the finals!
you literally recited the whole presentation directly from 30 for 30's "This Magic Moment"
Being a Magic fan I remember this series (& in particular Game 1) like it was yesterday.
If Nick Anderson hits just 1 of those free throws then I think Orlando go on to win the Series.
That loss cost them the Series as they never recovered from it.
I don't know about that. Still think the mentally stronger battle hardened veterans of the Rockets would prevail.
@@ckobo84 possibly/probably. But it wouldn’t have been as easy as it ended up being.

@K H Uh...
I don't see "overtime" mentioned anywhere, so I feel like you've fired in a bit for reasons I cannot quite fathom.
Alas, there is, if not "overtime", in association football a term called "extra time", which gets wheeled out in knockout competitions between regulation time and the penalty shoot-out.
I would argue that this counts as a de facto sort of overtime, even if it's not called that.
Additionally, in many languages, the added time at the end of halves are referred to as "overtime", so the truth in your statement really depends on what language you speak as well.
All in all, I do not appreciate your tone. I do not understand where you got the "overtime" thing from, as I did not mention it. And thirdly, football do add extra time in knockout competitions when a winner MUST be found. Overtime and extra time are fundamentally the same thing.
Oh, and fourthly: The game I was asking about has extra time. Go search for the Miracle of Istanbul on wikipedia or YT or whatever. Make some research before firing in, eh?
Peace out.
I love these rewinds...

Skip Bayless Tim Duncan deserved the MVP for sure, & his supporting cast improved from 2002.
But how did the 3-time champion Lakers decline? Kobe had a career year & became their 1A. The role players were pretty much the same characters from 2002. The only significant difference was that Shaq was on the decline, b/c of injuries, poor conditioning (“company time”) & aging.

Shaq and Chris Webber would've been nasty though 👀
@Harry Engel absolutely a good scheme fit. In those days 2 big men were played together alot. Webber was a 4, a power forward. Shaq was a 5. Webber could also shoot well for a 4 and stretch the floor well for his position. But the return they got on the trade was great too. But as we saw, Webber had a longer and better career than Penny Hardaway ended up having.
Shaq really is SB Nation’s MVP. The guy is involved in every second episode.
