My grandad was called in as cover in 82 as the main writer was taken sick . As we edged closer to the final, the guy made miraculous recovery and wanted to come back for the final. I think at the time the journalist were a lot closer to the players and they’d heard there was a chance my grandad (Denis shaw) wasn’t going to be with them for the final.
Long story short a few strings were pulled and my grandad travelled with the team to Holland and the rest is history.
My grandad went on to work closely with deadly , ghosting the book deadly , writing the fanzine the claret and blue and I think he wrote the graham Taylor book also . He’s an old boy now but I bet he knows the feeling John has and was just as excited being a life time fan .

apart from the flights I paid 585 euros for two 35 euro tickets away at Olympiacos...(and got stuck in the next section with the home fans!); Getting 'battered' doesn't represent the feelings that come with the experiences of the journey, the highs and lows and the achievement. It's the possibility of having a dream come true that makes it all exhilarating and joyful. Unfazed by the 'battering' and, for want of a better word, 'unsporting' and abusive chants of Olympiacos fans, villa fans broke into spontaneous applause for the winners and their fans. Classy Villa that summed up the spirit of being there. Sharing it with others, Claret & Blue Podcasters in Cyberspace, even Holte Enders in the Sky, is priceless. UTV

As a Rotterdamian, it's just wonderful to be in this world again. At age 11, I remember it but I was too young to appreciate the magnitude of it. Among other things I remember going back into school thinking that I'd actually played hooky to go to Holland-because surely I hadn't been allowed to bunk off for football. When I went back into school I was expecting some kind of telling off from my teacher but he was just so excited to see me and wanted to hear all about the game and the experience. He was a Blues fan but that just didn't matter in that moment. I found out Mom had cleared it with him (Mom took us to the game). Once I knew I was in the clear I showed him the pennant from the game that I'd taken in to show friends and he just bombarded me with questions. It was just a golden football fan moment.
So proud, didn't think it would happen. From the brink of administration to Champions League. Unbelievable!

I still can't believe it and I never thought I'd see the day. All the difficulties we had and the tough times make this even sweeter. Max credit to all the players, staff and the manager. We finally have a team to be proud of. I often feel that the likes of Arsenal and Liverpool fans don't fully appreciate just how lucky they are to be involved in this every year. I really don't mean to sound greedy but I hope that we can really make the most of this wonderful opportunity we have.

I remember Withe’s miss kicked goal in off the post and Spink’s two amazing saves in a one sided game vs Bayern - everyone saying we were lucky. Well I tell you what there’s no luck in our qualification this year in fact we’ve had more bad luck than good! I reckon we’ll be getting a lot of trophies in the coming years….
Spink made more than two amazing saves. He was a one man wall that repeled everything that Bayern Munich threw at him.

What a relief! Never thought I'd see the day! As I live just north of Barcelona it would be great to see the Villa at the renovated Camp Nou next year if it's finished. Great effort from all the staff and players!
What a season we've all had, from the horrific start of losing players and a bad loss on opening day that galvanized the team to smashing PL teams up and down the league, the trials of Europes difficult lesser league the build up to this day and the best part was being able to enjoy it with like minded fans and journalist fans from the villa podcasts .Roll on the preseason, the kit, the new players and the champions league and maybe the Bernabeu...UTV 💜💙

What a night after the exhilarating game on monday. Im like Matt struggling to focus on anything else! Its such a major thing for us. It's been so many years of pain as a villa fan we really need to savour these times. It's an amazing achievement given the current structure of football and how hard it is to break into the elite group
I just hope our fans dont become entitled... I've noticed going to games lately there's been so much negativity about 'bottling it' or 'you can't blame these passes on tiredness'...i wish our fan base were a bit more positive at times.
Lovely little tribute to little John Townley too...stepped up into what is a high pressure job and has shown real maturity and passion for the profession. Ive also felt there's been more insight and analysis this season from bham live which has been welcome
