    What would we do without Frank? His variety, his unique perspective. He's tapped into a wavelength no one else seems able to access. This is one of his best, I think. Like most people, I'd never even heard of the St. Francis Dam disaster until I heard this song. I bide my time waiting for another album.

    RIP Dave Philips, who played the very soulful acoustic guitar on this track.

    I did my 4th grade CA History report on the St. Francis Dam Disaster. First time I heard this song, I cried my eyes out, it still chokes me up.

    i love this song. frank black strays into alt country here but the way they lyrics are very factual but also very spiritual at the same time. wonderful tune.

    • @marshaul
      @marshaul Před 5 lety +6

      Most of the Catholics repertoire is "alt-country" (basically everything except the first, self-titled album) and the entirety of it is easily the best product of Frank's career. One of the best bands of all time.

    Not enough songs are written from the river's point of view. Bet when FB first heard about this story, he thought "Yes. there's a storming song in there somewhere."

    Great song, tragic effect. The dam was built 3 or 5 ft. higher then it was suppose to be and that much more water was put in it, which created more stress on the dam. The cement was porous and not properly cured, but where they put it was a disaster anyway.

    • @marshaul
      @marshaul Před 5 lety +4

      The root cause was the unstable base layer the foundation was on top of, and the previously-unknown phenomenon of hydraulic or hydrostatic uplift. In simple terms, water seeps into the substrate under the dam, that water is subject to a pressure gradient caused by the weight of the water in the reservoir, and this creates a net force UP and OUT. The foundation simply let go.

      Si tu parles de Frank Black solo, tu as raison. Aussi, son premiere album solo, 'Frank Black'. Sorry for my poor French spelling.His best songs areas good as most Pixies' mid-level songs, because, who was the genius behind the Pixies who basically created an entire genre in the mid-80s?

    I never read anything supporting this, but I suspect this song is a metaphor for Kim Deal's disintegration and departure the first time from the Pixies. "She" being the water, and also Kim.
