  • Here's a career that will appeal to those who enjoy getting their hands dirty! Alicia Chinnery loves horticulture so is interested in what it takes to become a nurseryman.
Nurseries are involved in all aspects of plant growing from soil mixing, propagation and irrigation to ensuring plants are pest free and in perfect condition for sale.
Alicia visits Oderings, a Christchurch nursery and garden centre, and learns how plants are kept pest free and looking ideal before finding out more about the intricacies of irrigation systems. Not all plants need the same amounts of irrigation and temperature controls so learning which plants need what is all part of the job.
While there is plenty for Alicia to get involved with, one aspect of the nursery industry has been transformed and no longer requires the human touch. The transplanting machine can transplant an incredible 10,0000 plants an hour but the nurseryman hasn't been made completely redundant in the process as there is still quality control and ensuring the right number of plants have been transplanted to check.
Alicia discovers a three year apprenticeship will equip her with everything she needs to know to succeed in this career.
