    Cole just found this episode , what a nostalgic trip down memory lane . I purchased my first car in 1976 a white 1963 mini pickup the previous owner had painted colourful balls and balloons all over it, I had some one repaint it red. It was constantly in need of attention, but was a great little car, really useful around the farm and life in general, could have done with a bench seat in the cab, but we used to manage by stuffing cushions down on top of the hand brake so three of us could go down the pub, who ever got the middle seat had to change gears. I burnt the exhaust valve out on number one the seat was knackered to rather than rebuild the head for which I had no money I nipped down to a friends breaker yard and stripped the head off a mini he pointed out cost me a fiver, only when I had finished did I take a look it was a 1000 auto, Took it home decoked it and ground in the valves and fitted it without giving it a thought inspite of the fact I knew it would raise the compression ratio it never crossed my mind, to cut a long story short it went well for a while but the elderly rings decided it was too much for them I was burning nearly as much oil as petrol.

    I love your channel. I work on my 1960 MKI mini mostly myself. Recently I received a “super” 998 motor built by Jemal Ketat ( he used to work just down the street from 7 at mini mania 🤫) similar but with the Australian big bore, flat top pistons, he stroked this engine as well, close ration gearing with an LSD. Quick steering rack, it’s a real street rocket! It is a beats of a motor and indeed a really great idea to hot rod your 998’s bringing them a bit more up to modern highway standards. Mine will do 80-90mph on the highway no prob! What a joy to drive a classic mini in life. Great work and thank you for your wisdom and preserving old metal! Miniacs for life!

    998s are such nice revving engines. I had a 998 Van with a Cooper S head, inlet, exhaust etc. it was faster than my wifes stage one 1275. It loved to rev, shorter gearing also helped.

    Great stuff, Cole & Justin, that's a great little pick-up, and looks like she goes very well. I've been using Seven for all the goodies for my '69 Morris Cooper for many years now, back to when they started in Virginia, and had them rebuild the original 998 and remote box for me back in 2013. Probably not quite as extreme as Justin's, but Steve managed to throw a few upgrades at it, and it's still running very strong. I highly recommend them.Great video, keep them coming!

    • @classicminidiy
      @classicminidiy  Před 5 lety

      Easiest way is with a dremal and some time. I have some close ups in the earlier parts of this series. The “right” way is to use a specialized tool at the machine shop to create pockets. I like the dremal method more because it’s easier.

    Love the sound of the BMC A-series engine. Really, who needs a V8? It's also nice to see that it was left as right hand drive.

    • @classicminidiy
      @classicminidiy  Před 5 lety +1

      I completely agree! Yeah he usually swaps them for LHD because it’s a pain in the ass driving RHD in the USA but he kept this one original. 👍🏼

    • @snarfusmaximus
      @snarfusmaximus Před 5 lety

      Here in Australia, people tend to have a thing for old American muscle cars and a lot of them are kept as LHD. I tend to quickly notice chrome bumpers and always give a thumbs up to the driver for keeping a classic car alive, only to feel a bit dumb when I realise I did it to the passenger.

    Great conversion and great video. What is the impact of converting the cylinder head on the horsepower?

    • @classicminidiy
      @classicminidiy  Před 10 měsíci +1

      Thanks! Unfortunately I don’t have any direct numbers. Just butt dyno. The car specifically at higher RPM just feels more open and responsive. The extra air volume I think really makes the biggest difference cruising and at speed. Acceleration feels a bit snappier but nothing drastic there. The 998 is already a really responsive platform at lower RPMS.
