  • I've always wondered what was the difference between Power Rangers and Super Sentai. So I sat down and went through the whole thing to figure out just how much Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers borrowed from its Japanese (Super Sentai) counterpart; Kyōryū Sentai Zyuranger.

      On the flipside, that's why _I_ prefer PR's continuity*, especially the first few seasons; they all transition into the next in a way that (usually) makes sense. My only gripe with it is that _it's not exactly done well._ I much prefer the idea, but not so much the execution. Besides, it's partially because of Sentai they have to do some of these things; there's not a whole lot they can do when they have footage of a bunch of Sentai teams that didn't even appear in PR that they have to make sense of. Not that I'm using that to excuse sloppy writing, of course; various PR writers do it very well, others....
      And on that note, coming from later "What's The Difference" videos, I don't really like this one. Whereas the others attempt to summarize the other shows' stories (sometimes to their detriment, as some's strong-suits are their characters rather than plot), in this one he just... complains about PR's continuity for 10 minutes. He never does this with Sentai, when half of their crossovers cannot even be canon, despite others completely being canon and relying on each show taking place in the same continuity when they clearly can't....
      But I don't come to either show for interesting stories (and certainly not continuity) anyway. It's just a very pleasant surprise when they have one.
      *I also prefer PR simply because I haven't watched any Super Sentai besides clips and reviews. There are a couple I'd like to watch if I can find them for a decent price. And also I'm talking about PR as a whole, not specifically MMPR. MMPR... isn't very good, honestly. It's perfect brightly colored spandex fun tho.

    All the powers were restored in the 15th Anniversary.
    Jason, Zack, and Trinis coins were copied. They left with the originals.
    Tommy being friends with Wes obviously asked to go back and get the clones copy of the dragon coin.
    Time Force was able to help Tommy create his master morpher. Presumably the others who had multiple powers also gained a master morpher.
    The Zeo powers were stated as a power that grew stronger everyday. Eventually it would be too much of a strain on the human body to keep using these powers until somehow someone can figure out to balance it out. Thus leading to Zordon using the Turbo powers.

    This is where I think the Boom Studios comic series greatly improves on the original MMPR series. Go Go Power Rangers deals with what happens after they got their powers but before Tommy became the Green Ranger (although they're building up to a retelling of 'Green With Evil') with the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers series telling an alternative version of what happens after Tommy joins the team. These comics have a continuing storyline involving an alternative universe version of Tommy who's an evil White Ranger called 'Lord Drakkon', and it's probably some of the best Power Rangers media ever made.

    6:15 - Linkara has a good explanation for this. In the episode in question, Adam does NOT invoke the Ninja powers. The transformation sequence and phrase are for the original Mastodon. The Ninja powers did in fact get destroyed, but the ORIGINAL powers were only damaged when the Thunderzords blew up. They weren't completely destroyed. And as we know, in some cases damaged electronics can still partially function. But as you see in the episode, it still harms him when he tries to use it, because it IS still damaged.

      So when Adam’s coin is restored would that have also restored the thunder zord?

    • @SBaby
      @SBaby Před rokem +2

      @@stonalisa3729 No, because the Thunder Zords were indeed destroyed, and the feedback that happens when their powers are tied into the Zords is what caused the damage to his morpher.

    • @ElNeroDiablo
      @ElNeroDiablo Před rokem +1

      @@stonalisa3729 Thunderzords were completely fragged and turned to scrap (meaning they'd need to be rebuilt from ground up), the energy backlash from that thrashed the active Dino Coins (since the Thunderzords were built from the damaged Dinozords, and thus tied to the Dino Coins), the thrashed Dino Coins had to be replaced with the Ninja Coins (and new Morphers to go with them) by Ninjor, but were evidentially semi-functional if unstable as seen by Adam's use in "Always A Chance" (In Space, Adam supporting Carlos from one Black Ranger to another Black Ranger).
      It was the Ninja Coins that Billy used during MMAR to return to his "true" age (and thus being played by David Yost) before they were stolen by Goldar and turned to dust by Rita & Zedd's magic.
      Additionally;
      We know the Power Coins were the physical world connections of the Morphing Grid for the MMPR Powers and it's easy enough for those with a lot of power and knowledge to create new Power Coins and connect them to the Morphing Grid (Ninjor made the original 6 Dino Coins, Zordon made the White Tiger Coin, Ninjor made the 6 Ninja Coins, and we know Ninjor made the Alien Ranger Coins as well), so when the Sword of Light was used it made via magic new Tyranno, Mastodon & Sabertooth Coins before *transferring the connections* of the Morphing Grid for those powers from the Coins of Jason/Zack/Trini to the Coins of Rocky/Adam/Aisha.
      Thus Adam likely had his Broken Mastodon Coin still connected to the Grid in "Always A Chance" (though we know the Power Coins can run off the lifeforce of the user, power injected from other sources (Green Ranger post-Green Candle), or piggybacked off another coin (Jason & Zack when using the Dragon Armour)), but between then and "Forever Red" it is most likely someone like Ninjor or Billy switched the MMPR Red powers from Rocky's Broken Tyranno Coin (which is why he wasn't in "Forever Red") to Jason's Original Tyranno Coin, before Adam has his Broken Mastodon Coin repaired by Sentinel Knight for "Once A Ranger" 5 years later.

      Plus in the power transfer both the originals and their replacements are morphed concurrently so its most likely that the powers were actually copied to the recruits.

    • @SBaby
      @SBaby Před 10 měsíci

      @@LiMe251They were actually transferred, and they needed a conduit to do so. The transfer was in progress, which is why both parties were morphed at the same time. Neither of them had ALL of the powers yet. Once all of the powers transferred completely, the first three de-morphed after the obligatory delay that tends to happen in Power Rangers when powers are moved or lost (most likely a delay in the Morphin Grid as it realigns to where the powers are now).
      Though for some reason, when Kimberly's powers were transferred, they didn't need a conduit. My guess is that this was probably because of the fact that the Ninja Powers and Green Ranger powers are different Power Coins from the original five and the White Ranger coin, which Zordon probably reverse-engineered (hence why the Mastodon could still be invoked, but NOT the Ninja powers; the Ninja powers WERE destroyed).

    One of the other really important plot points of Zyuranger is the fact there is even a 6th ranger at all. In Super Sentai history, there had never been a 6th Ranger, almost always 5 (but there have been series that had only 3), but sometimes an "extra hero" that wasn't a ranger that would fight along side them. When Zyuranger first showed a 6th ranger, I think it was likely a mind blowing plot twist that no one would have expected. I'm sure the trend of 6 or more rangers only continued because it increased toy sales though.

    Hi I thought this might be of interest to you.
    One of the reasons the plot setup for MMPR was so wildly different from that of Zyuranger is that it borrowed heavily from Bio-Man, Haim Saban's test pilot for his idea of bringing Sentai to the west, which he would show to producer after producer for almost ten years! Bio-Man was based on the Eighth Super Sentai Series, Choudenshi Bioman, in which a powerful otherworldly being (Bio Robo) and their small robot friend (Peebo) gather five young adults that were shadowed with "Bio Particles" to fight the wicked Doctor Man and his New Empire Gear. In a weird way, MMPR's setting was more of a traditional Sentai setting at the time than Zyuranger, which was the first to take Super Sentai and place it in the now-common fantasy direction.

Mei annoyed me with her constant whining and her helpless attitude whereas Kimberly was able to hold her half the time. Storywise, I do prefer Super Sentai because they provide great character arcs. Well it's like this for returning powers:
    After In Space, the Space Kids make a detour and hook up with the Aquitar Rangers/Billy and take them back to earth where they meet up with the older rangers and help them find Ninjor/fix their powers.
    For the Once a Ranger crossover where Adam morphs into the Black Ranger, he basically helps reconnect the Overdrive Rangers back to the morphing grid, meaning he has knowledge on how to fix powers (which he would learn since he had help from Ninjor/The In Space Kids & Billy)
    For the Forever Red Crossover, Jason had the original Red Ranger powers, so his wouldnt have broken since he wasnt using them, and even if they had, he wouldve just been found by the other rangers who stayed and got them fixed.
    With the Green Ranger powers, the Tommy Clone basically became Tommy's ancestor and probably dropped the Green ranger coin down the line to current Tommy, and he has a fully functional Green Ranger coin to use.
    The Wormhole/History crossover for SPD happened in the past for wormhole, and the future for History. Kira is the ONLY dino thunder ranger to keep her powers after Once a Ranger

    Adam is able to transform into the black ranger using the original Mastodon Power Coin which was damaged when the Thunder Megazord was destroyed. The coin's powers were linked to the zords and if the zords were destroyed it created a feedback surge that destroyed the coin. Remember, the Thunder Zords were not new zords, they were upgrades to the dinozords, and thus linked to the original power coins. They were the only direct upgrades of a previous season's zords that I am aware of, which is part of why I see season 2 as being a better adaptation while still using the season 1 suits. In season 3, Ninjor gave them new powers and new power coins based on the ninja power. It's why they switch their roll calls to "(insert color here) Ranger Power!" instead of their original animal calls. Problem is, they didn't change the helmets soo... that was kind of stupid. They weren't using Japanese ranger footage anymore, so there was no reason they couldn't just update the helmets a bit other than wanting to stay on brand.
    Anyhoo, the ninja power coins were destroyed by Zedd and Rita, while the original power coins whereabouts are left ambiguous. This is how Adam was still able to morph, as he had somehow kept his original power coin that was only damaged, not destroyed. He could have gotten help from Ninjor himself to repair it, or Alpha since he knew where he was stored some how, or maybe the coin just healed itself over time and was only partially repaired at the time he tried using it again.
    The coin switch is hard to notice. The props using during the season 3 morphing sequence uses new Ninja coins. The props used on the belts of the suits had the original coins because they just used the same belt buckles which were one solid piece. instead of making new ones, they just left them as is. In canon, this can be kind of explain by saying the ninja coins gave the rangers access to their old powers, and their old powers retained their old aesthetic. It's kind of weak, but it would at least explain why they kept the old suits (outside of wanting to stay on brand).

    For a possible explanation for Adam using the black ranger powers in in space. It does make sense since he doesn't invoke the ninja powers, only the original mastodon powers and while those powers were damaged in the power surge which destroyed the thunderzords, its plausible that it could still partially function unlike the ninja powers where the coins were destroyed.

    There are advantages and disadvantages to both shows! I own both. In fact, I currently have Zyuranger to Megaranger in Super Sentai and MMPR to Super Ninja Steel.
    Good things about Zyuranger;
    While not really any more competent, Rita/Bandora is more evil, constantly wanting to kill or hurt children.
    More and better fight scenes!
    More Scorpina!
    Episodes are more serious.
    Bad things about Zyuranger;
    Except for the brother story, the characters were a total snooze! We learn almost nothing about the characters! We know little more about the Rangers at the end of the series than at the beginning! We see them only befriending certain children and a couple of half hearted attempts at part time jobs.
    The one thing that is far superior in the American version, IMO, are the characters! Right from the start we know these people! Jason is the jock, albeit not a bully! Kimberly is the popular girl! Billy is the nerd! Zack is the hip cool guy! Trini is the shy girl although one who can kick your butt! And Bulk and Skull are the incompetent bullies! We know these people instantly! We have, at some point in our lives met people like this. And, over the course of time, we get to know practically everything about these kids! Like I said, I knew about the same about the Zyurangers at the end as I knew at the beginning! They mostly had zero personalities! I'm at 6 Super Sentai seasons currently and that only seems to be the case in Zyuranger as the other seasons explore the lives of the Rangers. I will hopefully continue with Gingaman next month.
