    Had some interactions with a Selous Scout who was working as a dog handler in Afghanistan. I asked where he was from, as I had never heard an accent like his, and he smiled and said, "Rhodesia." I asked where that was, and he educated my buddies and I about this war we had never heard of over smokes. Friendly guy with some incredible stories.

      @@forrestsmith2459 Hard men. I've known a couple of Rhodesians. One dude went to the basic course with me in '89, and we became good friends. His family left after the war and he grew up in Colorado. Told how his school bus was ambushed when he was like 6 or 7, same accent, his dad was a PATU, cops that tracked the terrorists. My bud led a platoon from the 10th Mountain in Somalia, earned a Bronze Star with V, said Mogadishu was like stepping into a fire ant pile and a 'wonderful welcome back to Africa'. His dad came to graduation and saluted us like the Brits do, palm facing out. Good men, and very proud to be Rhodesian-Americans. The other guy was my medic, he had grown up in South Africa did his time in the SADF during the Border War, very pragmatic, no drama and Huge dude, but a gentle giant.

    Your anecdotes are amazing. I live in Scotland, Arbroath but had my childhood in Africa. Remember travelling to Vic falls by train,the scrub and brush all cut back from the tracks at ambush points so no body could strike at you from nearby.Remember train had a gun carriage front and rear and loads of protection from on board Soldiers.Two weeks later, after Christmas, there was a Morter strike on the area near Vic Falls Hotel where we had been staying, we were very lucky. We had planned to be there earlier for our vacation ,please keep your stories alive,thank you.

    I too was in the Rhodesian Army. We were in a notorious TTL (Tribal Trust Land) called Nyamaropa that bordered Mozambique and was a highly dangerous place. There were plenty of deserted kraals scattered about because of the fighting, and one day we decided to see just how strong one of the dagga huts was; it took me 7 shots from my FN rifle to blow a bullet sized hole through its mud, dung and wattle wall. Considerably stronger than brick.

    As ex RLI in '73 we were never allowed to use an FN on auto. Waste of ammo and rifle can jump dangerously as well as melt barrel if you pump through enough rounds. Maybe a barstool warrior story or who knows maybe it was ok later on?

    • @fiveromeoromeo5225
      @fiveromeoromeo5225  Před 4 lety +18

      trilithon You're right, the weapon does pull up viciously on auto but she's okay for short bursts with long intervals before any damage is done. (The heavy-barreled version issued to the RLI at one time was naturally better suited.) We had no official restriction on the use of automatic fire such as you mentioned, but from a practical point of view, like yourselves, used only semi. Many thanks for the comment, and keep well.

Ist time was after we lost 2 guys in a vehicle ambush when l was in 1st Batt. RAR were sent down to join us at Hoya for a follow up. Had some old tracker which somehow l seem to think was from the BSAP. I kept well clear of a RAR corporal who was interrogating a local by smacking him over the head with a 28 R rifle grenade ( the BIG anti tank one not the smaller 32 Zulu). When they were based at the Pungwe bridge & we were at Ruda, also did a bit of an HDF with them & combined in sweep lines

    So, to summarize the story: you wanted to massacre a peasant family that gathered in a rural mud hut and would not have hesitated to do so in front of a young girl. Kata Strophe. Your summary is a little over-simplified, but I understand your viewpoint. The thing with much of life is that it consists of perceived truth, rather than the real truth. Your sentiments are well-meaning, but you should bear in mind that perceptions such as you hold did more to destroy our land and brought more atrocities, than can ever be laid at the feet of a Rhodesian. That aside, I do thank you sincerly for your comment and wish you well at this difficult time.

      @@fiveromeoromeo5225 Are you trying to imply that you are the exclusive holder of the actual truth, while everything that negates your cheap denialist narrative only qualifies as "perceived truth"?
      Let's just stick with the objective facts: as you indicated yourself, you and your band of racist killers (let's face it: you fought for the preservation of racist minority rule by Rhodesian settlers who disenfranchised 95% of the population) were ready to shoot up that mud hut full of villagers in front of that little girl.
      Please spare me the paternalistic lingo. You are not a role-model, no elderly person of respect to anyone with a sane mind, only racist extremists and terrorists like that mentally deranged serial killer Dylann Roof would look up to someone like you.
      You are a serial killer (how many poor rural villagers and members of the Zimbabwean Resistance have you murdered in cold blood by the way?) - not a hero. Zimbabwe functioned perfectly fine without you mass murderers, until Mugabe committed the cardinal sin of insisting on the implementation of land reforms, which were already agreed upon in the Lancaster House Agreements more than a decade earlier. That's when he was economically sabotaged by his contract partner (UK + her western allies) to pressure him to abandon the agreed upon land reforms. Not to mention the many acts of sabotage by ex-Rhodesians who received amnesty and employment in democratic Zimbabwe and who expressed their gratefulness by clandestinely cooperating with Apartheid South Africa to commit acts of sabotage and terror. You very well know that this is the truth, so stop pretending!
      Please do us a favour and eradicate yourself - that's the only way you can make good for the atrocities you have committed.
