I've seen this movie a bunch of times and I think it just dawned on me that Fletcher didn't really know what he was looking for in his Charlie Parker. Ultimately, it ended up being the guy that matched his level of rage and defiance.
Interesting! Thanks Game Daddy. (:
Awesome take
Interesting! (:
I think you nailed it with this.
Absolutely, though I wouldn't necessarily say someone to match his rage, but most definitely looking for someone to stand up to him and fight back, to show that they wanted it bad enough, someone with enough passion (and knowledge) to know they were better then what the great "Fletcher" thought they were. But not knowing exactly what that would look like, he was genuinely shocked the multiple times Andrew stood up to him, even to the very ending sequence. When Caravan ends and Fletcher was impressed, he shocked Fletcher by continuing until Fletcher realized "this is it" he's not just an ok player he molded to be a really good one, no, he was indeed his Charlie Parker as he pushed Andrew beyond what even he himself thought was possible for him. Sean wasn't his Charlie, and I feel like he thought Andrew would be his new Sean, but I truly feel like he was shocked to realize he pushed him to be even better, he pushed him to be Bird!
One word.... "MASTERPIECE"!!!
Agreed! --> Masterpiece indeed! Thanks for watching! (:
Best ending to a film ever!
Yes, a very satisfying ending indeed! Thanks for watching! (:
17:40 I think he is battling with the thoughts of his student killing himself and him getting angry in this scene is like his way of sort of doubling down on his teaching methods out of resentment and denial of Sean's death being on his hands.
Yeah, you definitely could be right. Having something like this on your conscience wouldn't be easy. Thanks for watching! (:
Mike's jaw dropped for that whole last sequence! Love it
Yep, jaw was on the floor! LOL. Thanks for watching! (:
Love your reactions hope you guys never stop making them
Hi Peter, thanks for watching and thanks for your kind words. So far we're very inspired to continue, even though the editing process takes a long time and it's extremely difficult the pass the copyright claims, but we tremendously enjoy making the reactions for you guys! (:

This movie is phenomenal it's a great example of relentlessness
Yes, a phenomenal movie indeed! We loved it! Thanks for watching! (:
You guys are great. So excited to see you react to more great and favourite films. I can already see a couple on the channel I’ll check out immediately. Subbed for the journey ahead. ❤ from Australia
Hello Australia! Thank you so much for watching and commenting AND subscribing! We appreciate it! (:
Seen this one . The library has the DVD so ive viewed it 2 -3 times with commentary. Being a drummer i took a little more meaningful stab at it.
Hi Mark, yes, I can imagine that being a drummer will make this movie experience even more meaningful! Thanks for watching! (:
One of the best experiences in a cinema I've had
Yeah, I can see that, it was a fantastic movie! Thanks for sharing! (:
Love your reactions guys, please check out There Will Be Blood. Best acting of all time, or at least one of the best showcases ever. I think yall will dig it
Cool, thanks. I put it on the list! (:
Many talk about how this movie is a tragedy at heart and it is, but the price of greatness generally ends in tragedy because the obsession and dedication to be truly great comes at a cost. For example Hendrix, Tupac, Mozzart, Van Gogh and many other. Incredible movie and masterpiece
Yes, so true! There's much to say about the tragedy of greatness! Thanks for watching! (:
These students FEAR this narcissist, I guarantee they do not respect him......to his face ofc, but behind his back they talk. There is a way to effectively teach / guide / mentor young musicians, but this guy's ego is so vast, it will not allow him to.
Oh, yeah, they definitely FEAR this bastard - lol. (:
Thats true, but he pushed Andrew Newman to be the GOAT drummer, thats what the ending suggests
@@maiqtheliar_ YES, the GOAT drummer! I like that! (:
Tell that to michael jordan
@@althird1010 Haha... Thanks for participating! (:
Miles Teller plays the drums in real life. In an interview, he said that 90% of the drumming is by him.
I was wondering about that. Thanks for the info! Thanks for watching! We appreciate it! (:
@@BossMovieReactions no problem! Do more movie reviews and I’ll continue watching for sure.
@@johnyang7909 Great! Just finished CAST AWAY, which we'll upload this coming Saturday. (:
You had me thinking it was my smoke detector chirping.
Haha... Sorry about that. We dismantled that sucker. Thank you so much for watching and commenting! We appreciate it! (:
Smoke detector battery: change it.
YES, you're right! I changed the battery and it still beeped, then I took the battery out and it still beeped, then I disconnected the whole thing, and it still beeped for a while... Now it's solved for the next video, which we'll do in about 20 min. Thanks for watching!! (:
I had to change my CO Alarm after 6y. The battery change doesn't always fix it.
People forget before the ending Fletcher told Niemam that the true Charlie Parker would never get discouraged. Throughout the movie you can clearly see Niemam didn’t know how good he was because he would always follow and not lead and trust his abilities. To back my claim when Erickson was out of tune but the other kid got kicked out. It was because he didn’t know.
Hi Nathan, good point. Thanks for watching and thanks for sharing your thoughts and insights. We appreciate it! (:
@@BossMovieReactions thank you for the great reaction you guys are doing great!
@@user-tx5oi2wm4h I really appreciate that, thank you. JUST finished watching another one... "Ex Machina". -- Stay tuned! (:
@@BossMovieReactions Gran Turismo 7 is a racing movie on Netflix and it has a lot of similarities to whiplash. Thanks for the update will be checking it out.
@@user-tx5oi2wm4h Thanks, will take a look! (:
The only problem with this film is that there is no teacher/professor in the world past 1990 who'd survive behaving that way no matter how good they might be. However, as an actor's showcase, this was great. Think my favorite moment was at the family dinner when the cousin is bragging about setting the football records and Miles Teller's character tells him, "You in a division 2 school." What a great burn, , ,
Yes, I think you're probably right, no teacher would get away with that nowadays, and yes, the dinner table IS a great scene with great lines! Thanks for watching! (:
The quintessential German always "pushing to the next level" lol
You guys are awesome! Great reaction, i love your vibes.
P.S - could you fix the smoke detector please, it needs a battery change
YES, the smoke detector! I can't even hear it anymore, but you're right, I'll fix it with the second-next video. I actually took out the batteries on both detectors and they BOTH still BEEP!! So, I need to investigate further! Also, thanks for watching, and thanks for your kind words! (:
Even the director himself said that he envisions Andrew, in the near future, severely depressed, addicted to drugs, and dying alone. The ending was supposed to imply that it was never really about his deference to his craft, but his deference to the egomaniac that is Terrence Fletcher.
The two locking eyes as he waits for his approval means that even though Andrew himself had reached greatness, the narcissistic wound that fletcher left, will continue to throb and permeate throughout the rest of his short life. A lot of reactions I’ve seen don’t give much importance to the scene where Andrew looks back, with tears falling from his eyes, in a video where he’s a child, filled with glee, playing and showing his dad what he could do. Sure, he’s great, but I suppose one has to ask if the way in which he reached his goal, left any more room for him to actually enjoy what he does, or if what he’s achieved was only for the sake of greatness, or, even: Does he even enjoy playing anymore?
A happy ending would have been completely detaching from Fletcher, and owning the ending scene without even giving him a second-thought (the guy tried to ruin his life, for Christ’s sake!), but, instead, he still looks to him to feel enough.
Whenever I see reactors revere Fletcher, and his methods, in any capacity, it always makes me worry as to what people misconstrue from a narcissist such as Fletcher, as something necessary to achieve greatness.
I don’t know about “one of THE greats”, but I’ve known many great musicians, who never had to put themselves through what Fletcher put Andrew through. I think that the reason why lots of people who watch this movie revere Fletcher, is because in order to be one of “THE greats”, you have to set yourself apart from, roughly, 98% of the people striving within the same sphere in which you achieve said greatness. And most people on the outside looking in, don’t know the first thing about it, so without a frame of reference, the grass looks much greener, as they say. It makes it easier to justify the abuse.
But I suppose when it comes to becoming one of THE greats, I still always wonder if this kind of abuse and obsessiveness is ever really necessary. Maybe few reached that status, but can a case be made for those who hold that status, without having to be abused as well?
Hello Mark, thank you so much for watching and for your thoughtful comments. I went back to watch the scene you mentioned when Andrew reflects on the past. I agree with a lot of things you say and it is definitely a valid point to wonder if this kind of abuse and obsessiveness is ever really necessary and if the ones who reached their goal of being one of "THE greats" still enjoy doing what they're doing. Also, I personally wouldn't condone Fletcher's method, but, from a writing point of view, I thought it was brilliant to give Fletcher a motivation we all can at least understand. Is it all worth it? Well, I guess only the individual "Greats" could answer that question. I guess we can assume the answer of the ones who were severely depressed, addicted to drugs, and died alone. Anyway, thank you again for watching and sharing your thoughts. (:
13:10 that's sadly very real family dynamic... anyone who wants arts/music as a career, faces that. Or perhaps not from the family (if family has other artists or otherwise supportive) but from some group in their life. That's the first barrier of entry. You need very thick skin to handle that when you're young
Yes, that is sooo true. As you might know, I emigrated from Switzerland and Swiss people aren't exactly known for being Optimists. Thanks for watching. (:
There was a drive in him.
There surely was... Thanks for watching! (:

I have added it to our list! Thanks for watching and commenting! We appreciate it! (:
Even the director is wrong about this movie. The kid wasnt going to be depressed after the end performance. They were sharing a look because they both 'knew' that he had achieved greatness. This movie expresses the harsh truth that many people, the director included, dont want to admit: Greatness can bloom from harship and by recognizing his potential and breaking him down, the teacher pushed the student to become a master and a legend.
Yes, I tend to agree with that too. There are definitely two sides to this. We don't know how Andrew is gonna end up in the distant future, but the end indicates what you have expressed. "They" achieved greatness together! I think my "Afterthought" video is along that line... Anyway, thanks so much for watching! (:
"Even the director is wrong about this movie"
This has to be one of the most condescending and egomaniacal sentences I have ever read. You don't have the slightest right to tell someone that they are wrong about their creation. For him it means something at the moment he makes it, for you something different when you see it. There is no truth. You can question the director's ability to communicate his point, you can question the message of the film. But you can't come and say that you understand it, and he doesn't.
Damn, there isn't even any logic or respect in what people say about other people's art anymore. Even the director is wrong about this movie my ass.
@@fernandohinojosa3211 Thanks for sharing your thoughts! I like it! (:
@@fernandohinojosa3211so you're a drama queen and a hypocrite. You literally just did the same exact thing to the OP that you're crying about. You can question the OPs ability to communicate his point...but you can't tell him what to think. Pretty egomaniacal of you. Tisk tisk
Dude… I know she can’t hear it… but I damn well know you can hear it. Change the damn battery
We got so used to it... Btw, changing the battery didn't work, and removing the battery didn't work either, I had to dismantle it. Now, please, relax! Thanks for watching. (:
If this chick thinks he is being "so mean" After only asking if somebody was out of tune, then I can't imagine her reaction once he ACTUALITY starts being mean.. 🤦♂️ I mean right off the bat. She thought he was being mean basically two seconds in.. I've seen this movie many times and I have no clue what she's talking about. Trying not to be MEAN myself But I can't deal with that type of person. Where everything is creepy that a man does and now It seems there's a big problem if somebody tries to teach in his way.. If every kid under 30 years old head teachers like this, the United States wouldn't be going Downhill as quick as it is with all of these dumb kids.
Yes, we do have a lot of dumb kids and I agree that teachers need to be a bit more "firm." Jessica didn't think he was mean after only "asking if someone was out of tune", she said it after the guy was YELLING at the top of his lungs and threw the dude out. I think we can all agree that that was a bit extreme. Nevertheless, thank you so much for watching and commenting! We appreciate it! (:
Ya really like that chocolate ya naughty boi
