      G. Bush made his "this aggression will not stand" statement on August 5th, 1991. The dude wrote the cheque to September 11 1991. He probably was not doing very well. Mind you, his landlord told him, only a couple of days later, that "tomorrow is already the 10th" (of August 1991).

The ending of the movie really was about nothing; the money & the tournament. It didn't matter in the end.

The western styled gentleman with the handlebar mustache is Sam Elliott, a world famous actor whose career started way back in 60's. His wife is Katharine Ross, another famous actress. Sam was born in my hometown and grew up here until the age of about 13. His character is known as "the stranger" in this film. For more info: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sam_Elliott

Thank you, Bob. We are familiar with Sam and when my wife asked "Who is he" she meant who he is "regarding the story" and not who he was "as an actor." Sometimes this happens because we look at movies from the "filmmaker's" perspective. But thanks for the extra info, we appreciate it! (:

This movie is basically a deconstruction of a classic film noir mystery. In those movies the main character, who is a private investigator, gets hired and does his level best to solve the case. In this movie, the dude has no interest in solving anything and keeps getting pulled back in by the other characters. They have to go to his house like 5 times to get him to continue to participate in the story, and at the end there are like a half-dozen loose ends that never get resolved. All the Dude ever wanted was his rug back.

Many have said that his character in this movie is a type of deity watching over people like the dude who just live life and try to not have any problems with anything or anyone.
