173. Taking the narrowboat up the Ashby canal to a marina mooring

- A Bank Holiday weekend approached and as I was going away for a few days to visit family, I wanted to moor the boat somewhere secure rather than just leave it on the towpath. So I headed a bit further up the Ashby canal to Trinity Marina at Hinckley and paid to have it moored there. On the way, it rained.

Where else in the world could you find such leisurely peaceful cruising through such beautiful countryside, what a legacy the canal builders left us.
Have just come out hospital and find your vloggs so soothing and peaceful thank you
Hope you’re healing well :-)
My wife wonders why I watch these videos, I do it for the sense of calm and wellbeing 😄
:-)
Simple, efficient commentary well interspersed with serene moments of what cruising is all about. delightful!
This gentleman makes me feel Good, what a gift! 🎈
Good Idea a man after my own heart. I would hate to leave ours unattended off a marina, you are not alone.
Putting the boat in a secure spot while away is worth the money. Just not having to think about it while you enjoy family time is priceless. Enjoy
I love the contrast of your boat slowly making its way towards the train bridge as the high-speed rail rips along racing to its destination.
People that are telling you use a drone while piloting your boat around corners are the same people that would text and drive at the same time.
Don't blame you at all, better safe than sorry. You are a good brother for taking off to be with your Sis on her birthday. I will just pop over and see what trouble the ladies of the Narrowboat Experience are up to.
Lots of trouble, surely
Your videos somehow always give me a relaxing feeling and a peaceful mind. Thank you for that!
Better safe than sorry....mooring in a marina....99.6k subscribers.....not be long till you hit the magic number
I don’t blame you for being safe, if I think something bad might happen ........ it surely will, it’s like I attract the bad thing to me. Your boat is beautifully kept and is your home why shouldn’t you be careful, and then you can relax and enjoy your time with your family. 🙋🏼
So pleased you've started your vlogs again , I love them ! and your wry sense of humour always makes me smile.
Thanks but I never stopped my vlogs...
Safe and secure is a good decision. At least it'll remind you of what a marina looks like, I mean it's been soooo long since you were in one!
It is actually! My last mooring wasn't at a marina haha so there!!
Thats a great idea putting your boat in a marina for a few days , better safe than sorry :-)
Thank you David for such a wonderful treat. There’s nothing like finding a new video of yours and sitting down with my first cup of coffee of the morning. Listening to the birds along the canal and those just outside my windows here was quite the concert. No rain here today, it will be sunny with a high of around 85 F. I so much enjoy seeing your experiences and how other people live. Say HI! to everyone and wish your sister a happy birthday. Cheers.
People break into everything including houses, flats, cars, holiday cottages or what-have-you, so why not narrowboats... Wise move, David. I'd have done the same, I think. It's your home, after all.
Love your videos David, please don’t ever change a thing.. Maybe make them longer but that’s all :)
I'd have watched this if he'd filmed the whole trip, lovely country.
I live in stoke golding, where you moored, and work at the ashby boat holiday company, a few metres away. what a coincidence.
Excellent Video and the Canny has a rather pretty paint scheme
Seems like a rational decision to me.
I would do the same thing with my home.
You’ve got the balance just right between capturing the canal scenery and experience and narration and humour. I’m hooked.
Hello David.
I do not think you should feel too bad about going into an marina from time to time. I all ready pointed out all the good points and allso that you have security 24 / 7 days a week. and in winter a cheap altinative to keeping worm.another nice crouse for us viewers to watch.
have a goog time and see you next week.
Gerard.
So relaxing setting here in Texas watching your videos
Yes! I'm from California and watch his videos when coming home to work to decompress and relax. They are very calming.
England is beautiful no matter if it's sunny, cloudy, rainy or whatever....!
hmm. seems there is a need for folks to house/boat sit for narrow boats. People with great personal references and experience and a desire for some travel to meet up with the boat may enjoy doing that. It could be a good self employed business oppurtunity, and even add in pet care as needed as well as delivering to another location as needed for competent captains.
Another great video sir I cannot blame you a bit for putting your home in a marina to maximize its safety. Boat, Van or House everyone wants theirs to be safe!
"Lovely crew" here. Thank you for being so polite about us screaming past you at 3.7 mph. I enjoyed our brief banter... and I still think you're mad contemplating a cruiser stern! (Brass monkeys in winter.) Hopefully we'll meet again on the T&M now that NB Canny is safely moored at Kings Bromley.
Hello Lovely Crew! Definitely a (small) cruiser stern like the one the Narrowboat Experience have. I tried sitting on my back deck in the sun today and it was too cramped! Just need an extra foot or so of back deck :-)
@@CruisingTheCut Thanks for replying David. Good luck finding a small cruiser stern. They're as rare as rocking horse droppings, je crois.
I don’t blame you wanting to leave your boat safely tucked-up in a marina, it seems sensible to me. Thank you for another delightful vlog.
It’s better to be safe than sorry. I would moor at marina as well.
Well, I cant tell you how much moor excited am knowing you're visiting family. But I dont want to be improper and go overboard with this comment.
very sensible idea, another great vlog
Thank you for the beautiful, blood pressure lowering vlog. Enjoy the time with family!
Afternoon David, well it is here in Kent when I watched the vlog. The sun is out and very warm (Monday 13 May) the scenery was beautiful and I’m Sure I had a doze whilst watching it - not your fault!! I would also worry about leaving the boat in the middle of nowhere. What an expert bit of parking in the Marina, thought you might have reversed. Regards Martin
Not only was it raining but the wind came up in the last half mile too so I wouldn't have fancied reversing. Also I exit at the bow and they only had half-length pontoons so bow-first it was.
Hi David I'm with you mate, I don't trust anyone as far as I can chuckem' !! Also just thought, what about mounting a car reversing camera at the front of the boat and power it off your light ! When you want to look ahead just turn the light on and the camera will turn on as well, then you can see around the corner a bit better !! Seeya Rob
87xfute what a brill idea
This is the stuff I daydream about.
Happy Birthday Sister Of The Cruiser Of The Cut
Well done, enjoyed the trip!
You've added to the ambience of the Rockies with your delightful Monday morning vlog, again thank you for your efforts...
I'm definitely going to put going to the UK, to see the canals on my bucket list. Enjoy yourself with your family.
Hmm, I lived in Burbage , Hinckley before I moved to France.
Seems pretty sane to me to park up in the marina.
Love hearing the birdsong as you travel.
Very much enjoy your vlogs.
The sheep are great at giving an idea what the weather is like. If their fleece is wet then it’s raining or has rained, if it’s dry it’s not raining! If you need any help on any other countryside fokelore, just give me a shout! :)
Well done David...You 'TRIUMPHED' it with a smooth Landing.
Thank you for another wonderful video. I do like to peek at the boat names as you pass them. My own favourite activity when “walking the cut”!
Excellent viewing, one day, just one day :)
I'd do the marina move as well. It's just not worth feeling stressed over something like that if you can pay to avoid it. Nice video
Hi, Well I Never "A Baby Pylon" Yes I Concur with you. Mooring up for a few days IS Cheaper & Less Stressful than claiming on Insurance.....
Just started watching & subscribed to your channel in this last week and you are fabulous. I would like to live on a narrow boat after watching.
Still enjoying your new stereo sound track, makes a big difference thank you :-)
Thanks. I'm still tweaking it, I had some irritating rattles on the recording this time which I'm not entirely sure of the source of. From the next video onwards, the handheld cam at the back will also be in stereo so it'll match up better.
I always enjoy your vlogs David, enjoy your days away at your sister`s birthday.
Thanks for another great video. Looks like the weather's a bit better now, and all's turned green. Lovely.
Nice people at Trinity marina. Nice place to moor the cut.
Nothing wrong with buying the piece of mind afforded by a marina. Of all the things one can spend one's money on, piece of mind is always a good deal.
Means when you're out and about, you're not having to worry and thus be able to focus on your time away and you'll have a much better time.
Those who don't worry and who just leave their boat anywhere; they're one of life's gamblers...
Funnily enough, the same ones who complain the loudest when something bad eventually happens because they gambled on everything being fine.
You do you. :)
After investing as much as you have with your boat, I'd think mooring in the relative safety of a marina a wise choice. Not as pretty, but safe. Loved the lush ride! Love that camera on the bow, makes me feel as if I'm sitting up there! Thanks & best birthday wishes for your sis! Hope you all had fun!
Anna really zinged you by calling your vlog Mooring the Cut!
You have a relaxing life style and easy to watch. My preference is to be on that train at 2:20. So easy from Troy > NYC.
Love horses and other animals, check.
Love bridges, check.
Love boats, check.
Love idyllic scenery, check.
Love presenter's professional style and soothing voice, check.
Bingo!!!
"The sheep were no help with the forecasting." 😂
Beautiful scenery David, thank you!
Gorgeous scenery on this one! And oh, that beautiful home with the raised deck on the canal! Glad you were paying attention to the low bridges. Thanks for a beautiful cruise.
I love how green the foliage is. It reminds me very much of Washington State. Except with quaint little cottages along the water...
The U.K. is the opposite of Australia, where browns and yellows are the dominant colours. It truly is "a green and pleasant land".
Random comment to help the stats. Keep up the good work!
Haha ta
I keep expecting John Cleese to butt in and proclaim "The Larch".
The Horse Chestnut...
Hinckley, the home of Triumph Motorcycles, another beautiful video.
Indeed, there will be a brief shot of the factory in the next cruise video
No one here can say anything to you about where or not you moor, its your boat and we gonna watch either way, your content is great and I look forward to your videos
Lovely cruise, David! After watching one of your previous videos I decided to go pick rubbish in and around the Regent’s canal near Angel. Got to talk to a lot of nice people who were passing by, so it was a lovely experience! Hopefully more people will be inspired by your videos and do the same - or at least stop littering!
Superb!
Wise decision David,I would be the same as you.Why take a chance, beautiful countryside by the way.Chris
That was a lovely cruise David....better to be safe in Marina it gives you peace of mind....thanks for sharing
Were going around the Warwickshire ring in August taking in the Ashby so looking forward to video.
We'll keep an eye out for you to get a selfie.
Have fun! I think I'll be long gone by then.
>^..^< I personally agree with your decision 101% since we both have lived long enough to see drastic changes in things like security, the proliferation of vandalis and graffiti. Sadly I became a widower to ovarian cancer 29 months ago and would have considered offering to volinteering to boat sit just for fun...... Also Happy to hear you made the effort to spend sometime with your sister on her birthday and came up with a plan allowing you to accomplish a task many a person would not have extended the effort to do.........
This video was so tranquil I nearly fell a sleep (that's a good thing though) until I heard the Alligator jump into the water at 5:00 Lol.
I'm surprised that most people haven't seen plenty of bridges and horses. I'm happy with just about any greenery and wildlife.
When it's your home, better safe than sorry. Without doubt.
Thanks David. Lovely Belgan type part draft horse, could be full. I'm watching on a small screen so hard to tell 100%. Thanks. Love the horse shots and the bridges. Nice all around!
Haha yep that one was for you. I got some more in the next + 1 vlog as well :-)
@@CruisingTheCut Aww Thanks. You made my day.😁😁
Lovely to watch- a lovely way of life.
Looking forward to you visiting bugsworth basin.
A long way off!
@@CruisingTheCut I thought so
Thank you for the vlogs, i've spent most of the year watching, im retired and ran work boats on the notorious exe estuary for most of my life and worked on the exeter ship canal, so this was a nice peaceful scene without having to worry about spring tides etc. Thank you .
I hope you had a wonderful visit with your family.
Wonderful that you ended up in the home of my distant ancestors(~400 years in the distant past)!
Seems like I might have some Hinckleys in my tree from Great Britain, where were they, If I may ask?
9:07 Single mum pylon. CURRENT-ly available.
Another, scenic and serene cruise. The English countryside, of the canals region, is truly beautiful, with a very vintage beauty. Occasionally, some spots even remind me of Harry Potter-ish scenes.
Great way to start my day across the pond! Thanks for letting us share your journey!
Thanks Dave it looked just like the Fitzroy River in Rockhampton bar the width and the rain and the country side. I really enjoyed it.
I think there are fewer crocodiles in the Ashby than in the Fitzroy, although I'm not an expert.
Beautiful countryside, love the baby pylon... Another brilliant vlog. Cheers!
I think your very wise to moor up in a Marina, I would do the same in such a circumstance. Cheers
David a new phrase “being sensible on the cut” pulling into to any unknown area overnight has some risks but leaving the boat unattended in them is another thing all together. One or two nights mooring fees puts you close to a pickup / transport point and security. Think about loosing your solar panels or a tank of diesel or even just plain petty vandalism like smashed windows. The potential cost and the inconvenience why risk it plus you have a worry free break.
Made my day again, so relaxing watching your videos. I long to live in a narrow boat.... I agree best be safe leaving boat in mooring, you'd only worry. Peace and love 🐈
Another enjoyable vlog, I would go in the marina also.
Great opening edit. A good overture for the video. It says you are marina bound and it is going to rain.
The Ashby Canal looks gorgeous. I think leaving your boat in a marina is very sensible - it’s your home after all. Thank you for a lovely vlog
Wait til you see the one where I cruise up to the end! So gorgeous!
The baby pylon was adorable.... I want one!
Do your research first so as to avoid any nasty shocks!
Nice one David and please don't be too hard on yourself ! I would do exactly the same as you in terms of the marina. I am sure the boat would be OK moored up on the towpath, but all you would do is worry and that would spoil your time away at your Sister. Thanks again for you videos. Cheers Jo
I would put it were you did if I could afford it.
I'm with you on mooring at the marina. Better safe than sorry. Love the videos.
Thank you David for making my morning coffee relaxing and enjoyable. Take care.
Lovely scenery and another great vlog to watch at lunchtime!
You should start another channel where you read books aloud, your voice and style of speaking is very relaxing. I would subscribe
Florida Paradise 🌴 I totally agree!
I'd do it but I fear I'd run into copyright issues
@@CruisingTheCut Dickens is public domain... I love The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club, so please start chronologically.
What a beautiful waterway. Very green and tranquil. Gorgeous bird song. Perfect parking at Hinkley. Thank you for a lovely journey and excellent video.
The birdsong and gentle gliding of your Narrowboat make for a very peaceful and relaxing cruise. Always a fan, thanks for sharing David
