As a boy of 12 years old in 1967, I was falling to sleep at night with the AM radio on and becoming immersed in the Beach Boys and whatever Top 40 hit was happening. Then a year later I was visiting my cousin who put In A Gadda Da Vida on, and my world changed. Thanks to Ron Bushy, I got a drum kit at the age of 14. and on April 4, 1970 in Jacksonville, Florida - my first rock concert: Iron Butterfly, James Gang and Blues Image. I was 15. But soon, the 70s swept away that early magic that this band had created and I was left with memories that I have until today. Thank you for this tribute. I am glad I was there.
This ground breaking song was the beginning of the end, of music fans listening to AM radio as a music source. FM radio was born! The days of hearing "Sugar Sugar" by the Archie's was over!
The Iron Butterfly concert that l went was the best concert l have ever been. It was in the Eagles Auditorium in Seattle in the fall of 1968. It was so cool wondering around the festival seating. Ron Bushy's drumming on Innagaddavida was absolutely amazing. No one else but Doug could have been the great voice of Innagaddavida. I thought Erik Brann and Lee Dorman was an such a polished musicians for being so young. My girlfriend and l were so excited to see Lee and Erik driving to the concert in a rather plain older car. We knew who they were and they both waved to us. They were so young and good looking - now they are all gone. My friend has also passed. It's a night l will always remember. Thanks for this tribute.
My favorite drum solos of all the time. There's no wild drumming, no, Ron Bushy plays a melodie on his drums. Never heard before. Then the classic hammond and the heavy guitar, what a timeless masterpiece.
Iron Butterfly was an awesome band and they still are of course with their big hit In-a-Gadda-da-Vidda but they had other great songs and albums thank you Phil. 🎵🎶🎼🎸🎸🎹🥁🎼🎶🎵
Great tribute Phil. Started playing bass with some neighborhood guys when I was 12. By 14, found my love for psychedelic music. We played both sides of the In A GADDA DA VIDA album. Had an awesome drummer that nailed the drum solo. My favorite on the flip side is Are You Happy. Still have the first 3 albums and listen to them on my old turntable. Just turned 70 and love the 60's music
Who didn't memorize that drum solo & play it on a table with your hands? When I saw them I think it was on their first American Tour. It was in KC at Bartle Hall. Two cousins & I worked our way to the front of the stage right in front of 17 yr old Erik Brann with our elbows resting on the edge of the stage. It was fantastic. The bass player & Brann clowned around with each other throughout the show, punching each other in the arm & having a blast playing. Loved it. At some point in the show roadies came rushing to the front of the stage warning everyone to back up because walls of flames were going to come flying up out of these 4 foot long metal trays lining the front edge of the stage, & boy did they ever. At least 4 feet tall solid flames. My first big concert in a big city. Thanks for your great story! Peace & be well!
RIP Doug . Iron Butterfly and Deep Purple were the first two bands I fell in love with in 1968 , and not for the songs most people would identify with them . " Soul Experience " by IB and " Kentucky Woman " were reasonably b ig radio hits in the day . The days when bands actually explored their talents and didn't just reproduce the same sounds over and over from album to album .
I was about 11 when Iron butterfly came out and was very much into music already/I bought the In-a gadda da vida album-and bought all their Cd's/in the first few years of Iron Butterfly/Doug played a Vox continental-- you can see it with the red/orange top on the album cover
Thanks Phil - a lovely tribute. Just played Butterfly Bleu on here. The Whitesnake track Love Man, from the Ready an' Willing album, owes a lot to it, or at least to the first few minutes. A beautiful song. Two future members of Captain Beyond seem to be on that track. Interesting family tree. In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida is an album I have on vinyl. Like Pink Floyd's Echoes, and Rainbow Rising, the contrast between the short and long tracks is astonishing.

RIP Doug Ingle. I have the boxed set, it's a great collection. And thanks to your video here, I shall raise a glass of Skinner's Lushingtons to the band now and stick on In A Gadda Da Vida.

I have made a vow to myself that I will pay a visit to the Skinner's brewery and tap room in Truro with at least one brother-in-law at least once a year. It's one of my favourite places in the world!

I'd always thought of it to be a really dark album which is probably half due to "being under the influence of certain substances" when I first heard it decades ago and its association with the "Manhunter" serial killer movie that starred Brian Cox as Hannibal Lecter. You telling me it was four musicians jamming happily together who were "recorded by accident" has completely changed the feel of it (for the better) now. Like you, I'm not one for drum solos but the way the keyboards come back in on the drum solo on the track are just sublime. It is proto-prog just before proper prog emerged.
Nice tribute again Phil - I came to Iron Butterfly via the film “man hunter” by micheal Mann - the first appearance of Hannibal Lecter on movie played by Brian Cox - there is a great scene where In A Gadda Da Vida is used - well worth a watch- and I snap up any Iron Butterfly albums to this day when I spot them . Especially the famous one ! What a shame all tbe original members have passed RIP

When I listen to it now, I am amazed at the great playing from each member. Unfortunately I never explored any of the other albums, but now (thanks to your comments) , I will pursue them. P.S.- "Termination" is one of my all-time fave songs....R.I.P. Doug, Lee, Ron and Eric.

Musically, I always felt like Vanilla Fudge was the band Iron Butterfly should have been. But Doug Ingle was their secret weapon, as he had a unique, husky baritone that was the prototype for the kind of singers we would hear later in the 90s. But what a great musical roster, Atlantic (Atco) had at the time! Not only carrying Iron Butterfly and Vanilla Fudge, but also, Cream, Led Zeppelin, Allman Brothers, Cactus, Black Oak Arkansas, and later Foreigner. A true artists label, where bands were given artistic freedom and not weighed down as much by commercial expectations as other labels
this is such a lovely tribute. i haven’t been a fan of iron butterfly for very long, im only 15 and ive just discovered them about 8 or 9 months ago, but they’ve very quickly become my favorite band. i’ve always been more interested in music from that time, but there’s just something special about iron butterfly. i have ‘heavy’, ‘in-a-gadda-da-vida’ and ‘ball’ all on vinyl and i think they’re just stunning albums. when i learned of doug’s passing, it was obviously very upsetting. he was a wonderful musician and his voice is just stunning!! i love watching videos of others talking about my favorite bands, so i very much enjoyed this!!
iron Buttergly was not the only band like this from the 60's Quicksilver Messenger Service was the same way. Early albums were from concerts at Winterland.
Did Ingle ever talk about the Manson family squatting at a house above Malibu owned or rented by one or more members of the group? This would have been in the spring of '69.
A really good album is "Live in Sweden 1971". 23 minute Butterfly Bleu on side A, 24 minute In A Gadda Da Vida on side B. Probably my favorite live versions of both of those tracks. Check it out if you get the chance :)

In the late 80's, I was in Jr. High. My dad used to play Iron Butterfly's "Heavy" album and "Tasty" by the good Rats. I've been a fan ever since.
