    I may love gunlance a little too much, so sorry for this wall of text in advance.
    This is an extract of the narration of the first chapter of the ultimate gunlance guide I'm building and where I want to include every single detail about the weapon.
    • Why you should try Gun...
    It is a good alternative if you don't want to read all this. Besides providing visual proof of the statement so is a little more easy to digest.
    I also want to remind that /r/gunlance is a thing a everyone is welcome there.
    This first part covers the basics of the three main shelling attacks, uncharged shells, charged shells and full burst that are the main tools of gunlance. I plan to write another wall about Wyvernstake and Wyvern Fire, besides another chapter dedicated to melee attacks.

    I have a suggestion maybe add some text bullet points to show which topic is being currently covered. With so much info you have to rewind a lot to learn everything and bullet points would make it easier to know where you are in the video. Thanks!

    You know somehow I feel like gunlance requires more muscle memory and management than the charge blade. Whenever I play charge blade I always feel in control and in the flow of combat, because the charge blade playstyle sort of follows a flow chart (which I wont explain here). But I always feel a step behind when playing the gunlance and I'm never sure when I should be poking, guarding, shelling, etc. Most likely because I haven't played with it enough but like the s'n's I feel like this "simple" weapon type hides a sea of nuance and complexity. I want to learn more. Teach me your ways oh lord of the bang stick.

    • @kaen4299
      @kaen4299 Před 3 lety +2

      Not really, it has a general flow too. The difference is that Gunlance can be considered as three different weapons in one due to the shell types. But normally you focus on one for a while and each of those types has it's own flow like most weapons and in each of these flows there is a set point where you poke and shell. Guarding also comes with experience even if there's no real flow to it, obviously. It's the same situation when you play Charge Blade and you want to decide whether you want to transfer energy into your normal sword or not, since it's not really part of a flow and not absolutely neccessary. Gunlance just comes off more complex if you pick the weapon up and try to learn every shell type at the same time.

    • @Broly91571
      @Broly91571 Před 7 měsíci

      All 3 gunlance types have a flow to them, normal is the YB-Y-B-Y-RB and repeat for its damage combo, wide is RY-B-Y-B-Y-RB and long is RB-B(hold)-B(hold) repeat. you get those down and after that its mastering when to sharpen and when to guard. While learning, its good to take Guard skills but once you learn what you can and cant block...really its better to go for full damage and best thing is you dont need affinity really since shells ignore hardpoints. You just eat through sharpness which is why my usual build runs handicraft, protective polish, artillery and magazine.

    I love gunlance now as it is my new main! The ability to have great defense and offense with mobility makes this weapon the king/queen of weapons in my opinion. I also want to express just how amazing it is to have a new ability the entire team can utilize, which is wyernstake blast. Just that pod can increase the entire teams damage through special interactions. From what I've observed, it can explode from teammates attacking it with blast or explosive weapons. That means impact charge blade/switch axe, stickies, wyern ammo, and blast weapons seem to receive bonus damage from the wyernstake. I look forward to future videos, I subbed!

    1) Executing gunlance's clutch claw attack automatically reloads the gunlance. You still lose one shell from doing the actual attack.
    2) Doing the overhead smash attack midair also reloads the gunlance. You must be high enough for the gunlance to properly reload (i.e. jumping up half a meter from sliding down a slope doesn't work.)

Because, at the moment, the damage Charge Wide shelling damage does is not that big of a difference if you compare it to the Normal Wide shelling, unlike what they have with Long and Normal Gunlances. 4:50 Instead of S S P, I do the opposite. with wide or long Ill S P P S P P S and with artillery master and magazine. You can pull off some pretty good damage numbers and if you are focusing on a large monster like xeno or safi its easier to make them stagger since you can get more damage out before having to reload. Also, Bazel buster on shara ishvalda absolutely wrecks his first phase when hes covered in rock. You can get off 85 to 150 damage numbers on shellpoke and it builds up blast faster.
    edit:
    For those reading, if you are going to do my favorite style which is fullburst....Handicraft and protective polish are an absolute must, because you are going to eat through that sharpness so fast you can go from purple to green in 20 seconds or less if you are really good with your FB cancels to keep the combo going. You will also stagger even huge monsters extremely quickly and I think my best stagger was on raging brach. Staggered him with an aerial burst. then was able to get out 6 full bursts and when it stood up, got staggered again for another 6 before it hit the next area and had to sharpen.

I haven't played MHW yet as I've been mostly interested in MHGU but decided to give MHW:Iceborne a shot on the Xbox One and so I'm waiting and doing research as to how Gunlance differs from MH4U. I know Gunlance in MHW is closest to Guild Style in MHGU, but from listening to this video and the last one by the same content creator, it looks like the weapon is rather different. I'd be curious just how different they play, but I'm still waiting on my copy to arrive in the mail and when it does, I guess I'll find out just how different it plays. Hey dude, cool guide. I got some critique: turn down the music, i'm not a native of eng/usa and i got a good understanding of the language, but the robo-voice makes it a little hard to understand with the music blasting louder than "her". I'd suggest turning it down like 30%-50% actually.

    so wide charged shelling is 8% lower damage but has ~50% part damage with long only having ~34%...and this effectively yields roughly the same amount of part damage.
    Does this mean if im a huge fan of Long-style charged shelling i can make a sort of hybrid with a wide gunlance if i can exceed that 8% damage loss + whatever im losing from the 4 shell (vs long)
    Maybe something like rathian 2pc set bonus (2x poison duration) -or- just blast status bonuses...in addition to focus3/artillery5/cap. boost...and then stacking raw attack for Wyvern Stake. The idea is to be using poke shell on downed/tripped/long openings -or- whenever comfortable as much as possible, shell+shell+WS on larger openings, and then use long-style charged shelling as per normal use.
    I haven't tried wide-style extensively and your jagras normal 6 GL vid/build inspired me to try out normal....but i was less than impressed in comparison to Long. Not to say that normal isn't good, but for me damage 'uptime' on Long-style is incredibly high in comparison.
    Anyways, i guess what im looking for here is an answer to these questions: At what point does Wide (using wide-style + long-style hybrid playstyle) beat out Long at charged-shell style? Is getting a few status procs going to push it over Long? Should i just stick with long for my above build idea (minus maybe attack stacking for WS) and poke as little as possible to *maybe* squeeze more damage out of tradition long-style charged shelling?

      Take a look to this build concept that I used to speedrun banbaro
      czcams.com/video/eCPiad5XZd0/video.html
      It is a build based on wide blast that can do more than ten explosions in one hunt.
      I used this build with partbreaker but could be replaced with charge.
      So, when blast scales to unrecheable values, you may swap to a charged shell strategy...
      I would through do some swapping around, I think makes more sense with artillery 5 but you get the idea.

    I was a Bow main for the longest time, then I switched to Longsword, then I tried the Charge Blade, then went back to Bow. I collected every single elemental Bow I could and dealt with the hassle of switching gear every time I went for a hunt...I was like, well, that's life and how I am supposed to play the game...then, one day, I met the Gunlance...and HOLY FUCK! End of the story. ;D
