    Today my sister and I made this recipe for our thanksgiving turkey and it was honestly delicious. Our turkey was larger at 17lbs but we just ended up adding extra ingredients as far as the basting sauce went. We also added some lemon peels as well. The skin was dark and crispy and I was pleasantly surprised at how nice it tasted, I was woried the flavors wouldnt come through but they really did and all of my family enjoyed it. We'll most likely be doing this turkey again next year, so thank you Andy for the delicious recipe share!

    Ended up making this. It got rave reviews from everyone. When cooked properly (taken out at 150° and left to rest for an hour) its extremely tender. The glaze is very fragrant and strong when cooking but mellows to a wonderful sweetness on the turkey and doesn't get in the way of the natural flavor. Definitely a keeper.

    I did not have to cook my thawed turkey for 3 hours though. After 1 hour and 15 minutes it was over 180°f. I did cook it at 350 instead of 300. I used the water and drippings at the bottom to make gravy as well. Delicious.

      Yeah but actually after the first episode with Brad and Andy. It seems that he already knew that the dry brine is better than the wet brine, yet still they tested it out in the making perfect video. So part of it is just for show, but I guess it makes for a better watching experience.

      Yea, I would think the bride would be less thorough. But then he also didn't really season the cavity much. So maybe it's not a problem?

    • @SleepStarvedNerd
      @SleepStarvedNerd Před 5 lety +4

      I always do a wet brine. The turkey is so much juicer and had so much more flavor. I use one of those big, orange drink coolers (Igloo brand, I believe) which is insulated so it keeps the bird safely cool and has a spout for easy draining.

    • @aemmerich
      @aemmerich Před 5 lety +2

      @@SleepStarvedNerd I think a dry brine might take a bit longer than a wet brine, but the dry salt will eventually work its way into the meat regardless. I think you do get more moisture absorbed into the bird with a wet brine, but I don't know that that definitely translates into a more tender, juicier finished product.
      The benefit of drier skin giving you a better crisp in the oven is pretty enticing, but can it offset the (presumably) lower moisture content of the meat? I'd also be curious to know if there's a significant difference in cook time between the two methods.
