Sony MDR-MV1 Headphones pro.sony/ue_US...
Buy them electronics.so...
In this video I share my experience using the Sony MDR-MV1 headphones. These are studio open back reference monitor headphones that are made for both 360 spatial audio and stereo mixing. I first tried these out at NAMM and using them now in my studio, they’ve become one of my favorite headphones. Period.

Exactly what I’ve been looking for, since a big budget surround speaker system is beyond my budget. ❤
I actually put these on my Sweetwater wish-list and I think it was because of your demonstration of them back in NAMM 2023.
What makes spatial mixing promising, particularly with Dolby Atmos (and maybe the other means as well), is that the fold-down into binaural makes for headphone listening even better. I personally love it when it feels like you are "bathed" in sound where it just consumes you as if you were underwater. This is something I want to do to more often in the near-future ... but one thing at a time =]
I may just have to grab a pair of these... the experience of such crisp spatial audio sounds amazing!
Great choice on those neumanns behind you , perfect size , perfect brand , perfect speaker
Using these headphones on electric drums and it's great
I think best is Sennheiser HD560S. I use it M-Audio soundcard and it makes difference. Very budget friendly too
I know they were not intented for it but since 2019 I use the Sony WH-XB900N for mixing and mastering with great results despite the fact they have lots of bass, probably way too much for most. I've had many bassy headphones before but none of them had that loudness while remaining clean. They go down to 2hz with a bump around 30hz. That means heavy bass music sound amazing on them but as soon as you listen to country, rock or jazz it won't sound muddy or bass boosted. After many hours referencing professional tracks in all genres, they quickly became my go to headphones. I use them to listen music, tracking vocals, mixing and mastering.
Wow good to hear you're enjoying those headphones. I always say, "use what works best for you." Once you learn any headphones, you can mix well with them.
@@SanjayC As with any speakers. Before having JBL monitors I've started on hifi speakers. I do prefer monitors anyway but I did with what I had at that time. Just for experience I tried to master a song few weeks ago on a mono bluetooth JBL GO2+. The frequency range is only 130hz to 20khz so really not suited for controlling low frequencies and stereo but in the end the mids sounded on point. Now I use them to double check mono compatibility and how the mix will sound on small speakers.
Try to use those headphones with sonarworks, maybe that helps with the low feeq bump
I wonder how they compare to the Sennheiser HD 490 Pro, just as regular stereo mixing headphones? Are they in the same league or are they mainly just for Atmos mixes?
There is not such a thing ''only for atmos''. But this got a great high extended region and nice lows. Plus, the construction gives better separation and spaciousness, that leads to better atmos translation and 3d feeling
Will have to check these out when I go to Japan next month.
Hey you’re going to Japan? Doing any music stuff there?
@@SanjayC Yessir will be shopping for records and go to a jazz clubs 🎶
How do they compare to the Beyerdynamic Dt 700 pro ? For production, mixing and mastering are they better or worse?
Dont buy closedback for mixing, only for tracking. And better to save more money for 500$ lineup (1990/ndh 30/mv1 and so on)
@@vladlabyrinth6335 thanks man
And how about production? Looking for a pair where u can enjoy the sound and it isn’t as analytical
I have a wired pair of Sennheiser headphones (model unknown), a pair of Sony studio headphones (again model unknown), and some new-ish Sennheiser bluetooth headphones ... all over-ear, around $200 each. They all sound incredible with spatial audio. I remember getting an ASMR spatial audio CD in the early 2000's previewing THX (and later Dolby Surround stuff). They sounded as good as anything today. Spatial audio can be serviced by two speakers in the super near field of headphones because we have two ears. 5hz to 80khz is way better than the 20hz to 20khz of my headphones, but everything else is possibly voodoo. $0.02
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I'm interested to know which Sony headphones you own
I’m keeping an eye on spatial mixes, but they still strike me personally as more gimmick than Wave of the Future, although opinions other than this I find have strong merit. My own take is informed largely by the economics of culture and where we are presently in that cycle (food and rent vs entertainment), but things could change significantly. And then an asteroid smacks us.
That’s probably a different conversation. 😂
Always appreciate your videos and your input!
As of now you have created exactly 420 videos for CZcams! lol ...but seriously, you are my favorite, my go to for studio gear. I really enjoy your content
Great video and man is $400 a good price! Like a few years ago I bought new HD600s for that price!
how's the soundstage compared to wf 1000xm4 (IEM) , i really like my xm4 because of the soundstage it brings, and the bass, how would you compare both for soundstage and bass?
Noticed you moved the 38" ultra wide to the white desk. How are you liking the 27" Apple Studio Display as your main monitor now? Do you miss the extra real estate? Best.
Of course spatial music is fun! And a very serious tool for exploring your creativity. I remember you were praising the Neumann NDH 30, how would you compare with the Sony MDR-MV1?
Impressive! But you can also use them for stereo mixing and thereby have some very good headphones, can't you? In any case: they look very good and professional ...
Awesome review! I'm curious, how do these stack up against the NDH 30? Also, it would be super cool if you could give the OLLO S5X 1.1 a spin and share your thoughts on those too. Keep up the great work! 🎧🔥
Great review. Impressive and tempted to get them!
Thanks you su much for the interview. Got a question for you. Does the Sony 360 app (the one that let us take a photo of our ears to create personal HRTF) work with this headphones. Can I have a personal HRTF with it? As usual, it is great to having your opinion. Have a great day. 🎉
Yes
We love those too!
Great vid!! What is the black and red controller on your desk?
Are these good for dolby atmos in logic pro x
Hello my friend do you think this headphone is the best to mix in stereo too? Compare to the beyerdynamic DT 990 PRO 250 ohm? Thanks in advance! Swane.
Awesome
Thank you so much for supporting my work, buddy. I truly appreciate it!
Hey your videos are so helpful thanks! However I’m confused about Midi keyboard update. So I use IPad garage band for live performance and looking for a 37 keys midi keyboard. I liked some Novation midi keyboard but I am not sure if they will work with garage band. Can you pls help ? Thanks
Thank you for the video. Could I use these headphones for stereo mixing and mastering? I'm looking to buy a good set of open back mixing headphones
Yes you can - works for both stereo and spatial.
Happy birthday
Can you connect these to just a regular interface headphone out?
Love love love ❤️
Thanks 🙏🏼
I own the DT770 Pro's from Beyerdynamic. Though those are closed headphones, so not a total fair comparison, but how would you rate the Sony ones to the DT770's? Or also, are they better than the open back DT990's?
770 is a very uneven headphones with messed up lows and bumped highs. Also big lack of detalization, so you really cant hear any 0.5db equalisation. In any of ndh30/1990/mv1 you will real hear any little equing and compression changes
@@vladlabyrinth6335 thanks
How’re these for just mixing production and mastering … everything here is about spatial mixing
Are these for Sonys spatial mixing only? Or can you try atmos mixing with them?
Atmos, Spatial, Sony 360…
How tall are you, Sanjay (for context)?
I ask because im 6'4" and my ears are relative. Many headphones are tiny, sweaty, and uncomfortable for me.
I’m 5’11”. I have a big head too :-)
Do they support head tracking like Airpods Max do?
No head tracking built in. Honestly, I always turn off head tracking. Do you like it?
@@SanjayC sometimes i turn it on (as a listener) just to ensure, which taylor swift sings from the back. But for "sound engineer" perspective it's more correct to turn it off
how is this compares to AirPods max
Nice to see you using Logic Pro 😂.
Notification Squad 💚
I had to pay $400 for mine.
$400?
First
Wow...that was fast! What do you think of the design of the headphones?
@@SanjayC The headphones look good :)
Quite sure it's more function over form, so that's great!
I personally own a Beyerdynamic DT 700 pro X
😀
Any info about detalization and separation in compare to 490 pro/ 1990 / ndh 30?
