    I appreciate older fantasy more and more every day. Tolkien awakened my love for fantasy and writers like John Gwynne remind me why I love fantasy in the first place! Heck, even Tolkien reminds me why I love fantasy still, with his stories like The Children of Hurin, which is amazing and grim as well. I love modern fantasies like Mistborn, Stormlight, First Law, etc. But that classic fantasy setting will always be more exciting to me if they are executed well. Like, an urban fantasy written today will be an enjoyable read for me with memorable moments if done well, but a fantasy in the style of ASOIAF or Memory, sorrow, and thorn will always be more memorable to me, despite the saturated market!

    • @gidonidus
      @gidonidus Před 2 lety +4

      Children of Huron is the most underrated Tolkien book IMO it is almost as good as The Hobbit and LOTR! It is also a fantastic tragedy, it's the first book that ever made me cry!

    MS&T is hands down my favourite series full stop. I am limping along with your Malazan warband and it says here that Erikson cannot tie Williams' shoes. The Tolkien resemblance probably stops at more clearly defined good vs. evil characters than the shades of grey' found in popular grimdark stories today, but having said that there are still some surprises. While not as meandering as WoT, as dark as ASOIAF, or as hopelessly convoluted as MBOTF, don't delude yourself in thinking that Williams' epic tale is simplistic. It just reads better than those other series because, as you have astutely predicted, Tad employs a beautiful writing style that doesn't have you scrambling for the nearest dictionary or multi-page list of, largely marginal, characters. Prepare to really enjoy epic fantasy once again.

    I don't blame you, the grimdark genre can wear on you after awhile. I've been reading the original Dragonlance trilogy for that same reason. A nice palate cleanser and takes me back to my AD&D days. I guess I need to check this series out also.

    This is my favorite fantasy series of all time, to the point where I'm unfortunately kind of dismissive of any others. Nothing else has captured my attention as much and it's hard to compete. I read it early on in my youth and now after a long break, the story continues on as an adult with tad williams writing all these new books. Can't wait to see how it all ends. Hopefully the film or television universe recognizes and recreates it one of these days as a faithful high budget movie series or a show. I think a cartoon or an anime is the best choice.

    I think you're gonna have a blast with Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn. One good way to think about it is if you were looking for an evolutionary link between The Lord of the Rings and A Song of Ice and Fire, this would be it. It's very Tolkienesque, while at the same time feeling a lot like a proto-aSoIaF.
    Also, I'm hoping you enjoy this enough that it inspires you to move on to Tad Williams' Magnus Opus: Otherland. It's one of the all-time great science fiction series and given your love and passion for all things reading, I'd be shocked if Otherland didn't end up one of your favorite series all-time.

    The size of the series deterred me for years (despite my having read equally long series). But I decided to at least read the first book - and ended up completing all the books. They're lively and engaging reads with a relatively straightforward plot. That is: you don't have to juggle dozens of major/minor characters/plots. Events and people are memorable. I liked the story's pacing.
    Should have tried given 'em a chance years ago!

    Got into this series recently as well and for almost the same reason. Wanted a comfy read where I could just get lost in a vast, beautiful world and didn't mind the slow burn at all. Saw the first book at a thrift bookshop years ago and it grabbed my attention from the first glimpse at the cover. Didn't buy for a long while until this year and so far am loving it.

    Merry Christmas Mike! I’m going to have to bump this up my list, I agree I’m in the mood for some good old fashioned tropey fantasy.
    Also I’m a little late to the Malazan warband but just got through Deadhouse Gates and have really enjoyed your coverage! I myself have been pretty confused to date but have been loving the series so far.

    You are amazingly well-prepared for this series! :) Seems as though everyone has provided good commentary on why it's a worthwhile read. I'll just add that the characterization and writing is so good that book length means nothing here. I love being lost in the story, and not concerned about how long the book actually takes. It'll be over too quickly, no matter what.

      Definitely. I don’t read as a race. If I’m loving the world and characters I don’t want it to end (i.e. The Stand could have been 500 pages longer and I’d have loved it).

    I first read that series somewhere in the mid to late 90's ( about 25 years ago ) and I am re reading now, in 2022, for the first time since. And what a damn good story it is! I forgot most of the details, bu I vaguely remember the main story plot!

Tad Williams seems more my style as Asoiaf is my favorite series along with wheel of time and kingkiller. If tad williams writes anything like Robin Hobb or Rothfuss I think I will really enjoy this series.

    I read ShadowMarch by Tad Williams first thought it was fantastic. I did more research and found the Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn series by him and wanted to try it to compare if it was as good as ShadowMarch. It is a very big investment of time, but I'm hopeful that it'll be worth it.
