In the 60s and 70s, Hobsonville village only had a butcher, a grocer/post office/petrol station, and a dairy. There were about 70 houses for Air Force personel in the village, and down by the water 30 more houses, an Air Force marine facility, and grass airstrip. Elsewhere there wasn't much for miles except, paddocks, trees, mangroves, and the smell of clay and cow shit. Hobsonville had a certain bucolic charm, and I loved the place.

Imagine being a kiwi in NZ and only to find out most kiwis earn less than $55k a year. And then your landlord is getting $100k in other people paying their mortgage (rent) and 20% increase in their property value. Then finding out they never pay any tax and almost ever millennial is under the poverty line (households that make less than 60 per cent of the median disposable income) and half their income is going to a slumlord or paying off a million dollar house that’s only worth $200k max.
Then to find out you’re competing with a huge population trying to find a home to live in. Then to have the population of your small Island has skyrocketed in the past few years. In 20 years our population has gone up almost 30%.
Don’t move to NZ. It’s nice and all. But in reality it’s a hell hole.

You can say the same about most developed nations. Your grudge is unfettered crony or late stage capitalism. Turn the tax on the rich to 90% like the 1950s.

Maybe a financial hellhole. But not a hell hole in general i am quite comfortable with my life here.

current median income is around 60k and it includes part-time, casual works and people on benefits. The average income should be 80k+. You can find heaps of single bedrooms even in remuera for 150-200/w and if you shop only from paknsave you get 3.5 for a bag of frozen veg, 5/kg chicken drumstick etc. A person on median income should get 45k+ after tax annually. If you are careful on budgeting you can save 35k+ easily.
