Thank you for the videos, they're the best around! I just got all my parts in to replace the pop shaft seals and the o-ring. However I did not order the key, how important is that key? LOL it's about a week out and I was trying to get it done sooner.

We are honored to read this, no joke. Thank you, and we enjoy talking boats and jet skis. We recommend replacing it however that’s personal preference.
Hopefully your new part gets here sooner rather than later. Let us know if you have any questions. 🧰

Your videos are very helpful. I 'm rebuilding an 80s MErcury and I have a question about that O- ring on the carrier. I removed my old one and it was a bit stuck. I put the new one on, and it definitely doesn't feel as tight as the old one, it easily rotates. Is this alright?

Thank you, we are honored to read this. The new o-ring shouldn’t have any play…it should grip around carrier when properly placed in its machines slot.

Hi , I am working on a Mercury 50 hP 2 stroke, and I'm to the point of torquing the ring with the special tool. I have it hand tightened by just using the ring tool in my hand, without the torque wrench. I have some in and out play on the shaft and it feels as if I'm pushing against a spring. Will this resolve as I torque the ring? Is it normal to have in and out play? I notice that yours has a little in and out play as you turn it around the 9:25 mark in the video, just wanted to confirm that this is normal. I have checked my shifting, and it is working as it should. Thanks

Thanks for watching, very little play as shown in the video is normal. 😁👍

Is the reverser gear pressed into the bearing and bearing carrier? Some videos show the reverser gear just pulling out easily and mine does not. Thanks.

Thanks for watching, it sure is and will require a press. Our local marina pressed our gear and bearing into carrier for a very friendly price.

Does the shift shaft have to be removed prior to pulling the carrier housing .. I have a 2001 mercury 150

Thanks for watching. In our case, no. The shift shaft will be removed after pulling bearing carrier and prop shaft.
By that point, gaining access to the internal shift crank will be the time to remove shaft…however that may be different for your 2001.
