Neck shaping is always the best part in guitar building. I always mark the neck with pencil lines to see where i want to shave it and where not. Neck shaping for me is like meditation. Feel, play, shave a bit until its perfect. After sanding with 600 grit, I take a clean rag with little water to the neck to raise the grain. Wait until its really dry and sand again. On the back I prefer a little lineseed oil or light shellac to seal it….

Well done Jedd. I’m not a pro luthier either but a pro machinist. So I made my own neck support, leveling gage and and leveled out and re-crowned the frets on a super cheap strat that had string buzz and dead spots. If you have the determination and access to CZcams instructional videos, you can do it.

As always, thanks!! Next time you swap out pickups or solder the input jack, it would be great to see your process. Enjoy the day!!!

Pretty bold move Jedd. I’m always afraid I’ll go too far with anything beyond Emory paper. Btw, I think Gary Moore was Irish. Great video

I’ve done a few carport builds myself. I think twelve or so. Built everyone of them with Drew Winn’s Album on repeat. Finest times of my life. ❤

LOL, I knew you were going to get after that neck and shape it.

Good description of neck shaping. I use pretty much the same method, but I’ve never done it with the guitar strung up. Will try that next time. I really like the StewMac Aged Clear lacquer. It has more brown than yellow, and polishes really smooth without being glossy. My favorite neck finish. Thanks for posting!

👍cool vid man. A little bit of shoulder off the high E side to make it comfortable for that sensitive bit of bone above the first finger leading up to the webbing is my thang, and many many others by all accounts. Particularly the guys that like their instrument slung super low,...I think it sub-consciously took me years to get over the; "They did what to the neck of that OG LP!?!?" reaction to really get the full concept of a well executed assymetrical carve:)

Thanks for sharing. Man, you'd love my Blackguard neck - 0.93 - 0.99 soft V to C , with nice shoulders. a great "old neck" feel that fills the hand.

Do you ever roll the edges of your fretboard on new necks to make them feel more played in? If so, what’s your process for that? Been wanting to take the sharp edge off one of my teles for a while now, but didn’t have the courage. You inspire me to try!

The guitar that you saw Gary Moore playing was Peter Green's "Greeny". I believe the pickup orientation was just a happy accident. Cheers

Peter Green's tech flipped the neck pup around!.

Very cool Jedd!! I don't think there is a wrong way, if it works for you, gets the results you want, that's most important. A good spray bottle, just a little mist on the neck will raise the grain for final sanding. Makes it smoother than a baby's bottom!! LOL 8) Cheers, --gary

Peter Green flipped his neck humbucker around...Gary Moore played them the other way

I would have taken the neck off to work on it,it would allow you to sight down the neck, and get it closer to one you like, in your collection, funny I learned on a soft v acoustic,, and when I break it out now, feels weird to me, playing d shape more now days.

What are you playing through Jedd? I know you're just noodling about but those are some really nice garage tones :) Love the "old" sound.

You make a Tele sound great man!
Question, when you put the clear lacquer on, do you cover the entire guitar except the part you’re spraying?

If you want to give a recommendation, I will take it, but ok if not... don't want to be a pest.... do you have a particular sandpaper method (circular, with or cross grain)... I ask because I am feeling the grain after sanding and wondering if it is because I am going with the grain or something. Love that you did this one... I happen to be foolin' with a partscaster at the moment.

Thanks for sharing this part of creating your sound. What circuit are you using to balance the volume of humbucker and single coil? 👍
