    Unpopular opinion: if you have a decent outboard mic pre, you don't necessarily need a cloud lifter for the SM7B

      The cloudlifter is an outboard mic pre

    • @skorpers
      @skorpers Před 11 měsíci +5

      Is it really unpopular? Most entry level audio interfaces are capable of causing the SM7B to clip lol. And since preamp noise has the highest SNR at its max, there is no issue. Inline preamps make it worse. Their EIN is generally slightly louder than the preamp itself so by using one and not maxing out your interface gain you are just ruining your audio.
      If you are considering a cloudlifter, may as well get a DBX 286s since the EIN is roughly the same except you get 60DB of gain from it.

    • @Lyuze
      @Lyuze Před 11 měsíci

      @@skorpers it's not unpopular, op just doesn't know what they're talking about. The only places that cloudlifters are popular are desktop gaming setups. Any actual recording environment is using a real preamp with the sm7b.

      Ive tried so many different settings, eq's, compressions etc with the sm7b. And none sounded good enough on my voice. I see other people where it sounds great on their voice but not mine. I got the rode procaster and it sounded excellent on my voice almost right out of the box. I think your specific voice matters with what mic you use. Problem is everyone thinks this mic is the best for some odd reason.. lol

    Try Bruel & Kjaer instrumentation mic's. They may require special high voltage phantom power and not none like SM7's, or 48 VDC like most condensers, and that may mean normal low voltage mic cords do not comply with electric codes, but they're near ideal for picking up sounds actually present, be that voices, musical instruments, or people in nearby rooms or outside on the street.
    IOW, the users have to build serious quality studio spaces, and learn to avoid bad habits with sounds from papers, food, chairs, etc.

    Listen if you have a podcast you don't need a cloud lifter. most interfaces come with well over 70 db if there are more than 4 xlr outputs 80% of the time. but a clout filter might be good to reduce the white noise. But the sm7b is by far the best mic right now.

  • @xhgcommentaryarchive

    If you want SM7B quality but don't want to spend the crazy price get a Fifine Amplitank K688. It's legitimately equal to it but costs $80. There's some plosive issues but with an aftermarket windscreen they sound almost exactly the same, with some even preferring the K688 over the SM7B

    1. Take off the windscreen and put a normal pop filter in it's place
    (windscreens are for outdoor use and they muffle the sound)
    2. Install the Anser mod by Truman
    Boom... clarity, gain reduction and one of hell of a nice mic without the extra cable and hassle of a cloud lifter.
