      The "Parelkandij" refers to the sugar pearls. The cake/cookie itself is called "ontbijtkoek" which directly translates to "breakfast cookie" it tasted dry, because usually when we Dutch people eat it, we spread butter on top. Also the "Rinse" in "Rinse Appelstroop" refers to the area where the recipe is from. Hope this was informative :)

      Agreed fresh ones made are the best, used to get them on the Saturday market in town. I live in Thailand now and buy stroopwafels at Schiphol airport, my kids love 'm. I usually put them for 5 to 10 seconds in the microwave, it makes them nice and soft and brings out the flavour a bit more.

      Stroopwafels are indeed good warm, but I prefer them crispy myself. The hot tea/coffee trick makes the waffles soft and moist, which some people like a lot, but I prefer freshly baked or microwaved.

  • @renefrijhoff2484

    Fun fact, the 'spijs' in the filled speculaas is made almost the same way as anko is made. Of course the almonds are not cooked in opposite of the azuki beans, but they are meshed together like the azuki beans and also sugar is added to sweeten.

  • @Waffletoasters

  • @eurolaclactatiekunde6998
    @eurolaclactatiekunde6998 Před 6 lety +3

    I love your take on trying foreign treats! Some things to add to your understanding. The parelsuiker refers to the sugar grains on top of the breakfastcake. You should eat it with some good butter on it and can be serverved for breakfast or with tea, coffee or hot chocalat later in the day. The spiceynes of all speculaas products differ by brand. When home baking, please feel free to be more generous with the spicing! The speculaas cake is traditionally served at coffee time in winter, during december celebrations. Stroopwafels are cookies, a compagnon of coffee, tea or hot chocolat, not breakfast or dessert (we do not regularly eat baked goods for dessert, here, more puddings of yoghurt). Applestroop is very concentrated applejuice. In the most southern province of the Netherlands (Limburg) they put it on everything, like toast with sunny side up eggs, with or without bacon, or in sandwiches with old Gouda cheese

    My Dutch coworker taught me how to make stroopwafels and even bought me a wafel maker. It isn’t actually two wafels stuck together. It is one wafel sliced through the middle. You need to do it quickly while they are super hot. Burnt fingers are a small sacrifice for these delicious cookies. Or you can just buy them already made.

    Did browse the comments a bit but didn't see anyone explaining the two Speculaas. The first one you tried is the traditional one, the second one came years later and is actually called " Gevulde Speculaas" (Filled Speculaas). It uses the same spices but a different dough and the filling is an Almond/sugar/egg paste we call "Spijs"

    You really need to put the stroopwaffels over a hot cup of tea. It heats up the caramel and makes it gooey and then when you dip it into the tea it adds a bit of sweetness. Best way to enjoy. (You can just place it lightly over the top of a cup that is a good size.)

    Put “stroopwafels” in the microwave for a minute on 600 w then let it cool down for like 15 seconds. It’ll taste even better. Trust me! Try find the good numbers for you, maybe it’ll be better if you do it for 30 seconds for example. I do it like this and it’s delicious
    Edit: It depends on the brand you use!!! I use “kanjers” it’s Dutch so first try put it in the microwave for a short time and if it isn’t that crispy and warm then try it for a longer time or higher temperatures!

    Good Video guys! Next time you try the stroopwafels, get a cup of hot coffee or English tea, then rest the stroopwafel over the cup resting it on the rim. The steam from your coffee gently heats the stroopwafel and slightly melts the caramel. Nibble and sip. It's delicious!

    The speculaas cookies you ate are regular supermarkt ones. If you get them from a real baker they are more cinnamony/spiced and really delicious 😋

    appelstroop on bread with a layer of cheese on top is really nice breakfast as well :)
    If you go to a market on saturday. You can get huge freshly made Stroopwafels. they're soft, still warm and the syrup is still a bit runny.

    Oooh!!! Stroopwaffles!
    Love it! The syrup consistency so thick, it's chewy, which make me love it more. Perfect match with the pair of waffles (or is it waffer?)

    "Maybe this is the cake type speculaas?" @2:00
    Yes, actually, that's how I'd describe it as well! :) It's true - there's a cookie named speculaas, which is the one you tried with the almonds on the back, but then we also have something we call "filled speculaas", which is the cake type treat you see on the box. It's speculaas but just sort of cake-like and with almond paste in-between O;

    You can buy "stroopwafels" in Tokyo! I bought them at the train station. They are called "Kanjers".. I have to say it was 8 years ago when i was last in Japan

    Those stroopwafels were a cheap kind... if you already liked those, you're gonna love proper ones.

    You should let one of the stroopwaffles (sp?) sit on the top of a cup of hot coffee or tea for a minute. It will soften up the waffle and syrup and make it taste even better!
