Learn how to split a pill in half or cut a pill in half for medication administration as a nurse. As nurse, you may have to split a medication in half to equal the dose the physician has ordered. It is important to always be aware if a pill can be split or not. If you are unsure if a medication can be split, always call pharmacy to confirm whether you can divide the medication.
When cutting a pill in half, it is best practice to use a pill splitter/pill cutter. A pill splitter is designed to achieve the most accurate cut when halving a medication. It contains a sharp blade and tray area that holds the pill in place during splitting. Always avoid splitting a medication with your fingernails, hands, or other sharp objects.
If the pill does not cut equally or falls apart, check with your hospital protocols on what to do before administering the dose to the patient. Many hospital protocols require you discard the medication and start over. In addition, if you are administering a controlled substance don't forget to waste the other half of the medication with another nurse.
