  • www.democracynow.org - Former U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has withdrawn as commencement speaker at Rutgers University following protests by faculty and students over her role in the 2003 U.S.-led invasion of Iraq. Rutgers faculty had circulated a petition decrying the role Rice played in "efforts to mislead the American people about the presence of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq." Last week, Rutgers students occupied a campus building in a call for the invitation to be withdrawn. In a statement this weekend, Rice said her appearance "has become a distraction." We discuss the "No Rice Campaign" with Rutgers University student protester Carmelo Cintrón Vivas and Baher Azmy, legal director of the Center for Constitutional Rights.

    WTF $35,000?!? For 15 minutes!?! That's double of what a minimum wage earner makes in 1 year in this country! And, she's a traitor.

    This makes me proud to be a Rutgers student. Especially seeing how active the faculty was in speaking out and encouraging students to take action.

    Carmelo nailed it! "You have to go beyond reducing a person to their race or to their gender and looking into their actions."

    This is very refreshing. For so long America has turned a blind eye to the misdeeds of top officials -- it is great that there are people who haven't forgotten and refuse to accept. I hope this sets the standard for all other Bush, Clinton and Obama administration officials at all other commencements.

    Carmelo Cintrón Vivas should now turn his attention to shutting down former NSA and CIA Director Michael Hayden.

      It's good for making dozens of billions of dollars for military contractors, and for employing young men who otherwise don't really know how to do very much useful.

    jack spratt--the student associations who protested condy have publicly said they would protest obama for his war crimes as well if he spoke here...so, there you go.

  • @FragileButFree

    While I agree with the sentiment, would they have the guts to protest GW Bush or Cheney?

    • @TheQualityrkc
      @TheQualityrkc Před 10 lety +2

      Better question, would they have the guts to support Hilary Clinton who was also a big Iraq war supporter.

    • @777saroja
      @777saroja Před 10 lety +4

      Here is an even better question. As you sit in your armchairs, you and the others who, with such superiority cast your judgements upon the actions of others, what would you do? Anything? I doubt it. These young people have the guts. You obviously don't. Bravo young friends, for your convictions.

    • @TheQualityrkc
      @TheQualityrkc Před 10 lety +2

      Fragile, I am a bit confused what the issue is. Why is protesting Rice different than protesting GWB or Cheney? Why do you expect they wouldn't treat those two as they have treated Rice?

    • @FragileButFree
      @FragileButFree Před 10 lety

      TheQualityrkc "Why do you expect they wouldn't treat those two as they have treated Rice?" Just a hunch...I find that people more readily oppose government officials who are women and/or black than those who are white male republicans (esp those specific white male republicans mentioned).

      ***** I actually feel it is the exact opposite. As a man it would be harder for me to yell truthful obscenities at a woman than a man. I do find it strange you would inject this into the conversation though. Feminist without a cause?

    I have hired three people in the last decade from Rutgers. All mediocre performers. Hired five from Stanford. All stars.
