      Chief 1 you need to calm down because you are acting like i put 5 quarts of ATF into my engine. my engine oil is 3.8 qts of mobil-1 5w-30 and 0.5 qts of ATF every other oil change. My lifters in my pathfinder has been ticking for a year and my oil changes has always been at 2500-3000 miles with mobil-1 extended high mileage. Plus my pathfinder is 22 years old and barely about to pass 185k miles. As a former engine technician at a Chevy dealer i don’t think 0.5 quarts is going to be an issue as long as the viscosity isn’t altered severly

      There is good oil and bad oil. Some oil has more addatives for cleaning, or wear, or longevity. Other oils will have more stabil viscosity, or higher protection in hot environments.
      More then that, it is hard to know when it is the "right time" to change the oil. Does your car have weak rings? You might change the acidity of the oil early. Does it have hot spots (caugh, dodge, cough), then you may need heat protection and cleaning.

    Royal Purple really is that good. I'm an automotive engineer and I was once responsible for getting a 300hp, 6.7L diesel engine to survive when it was cranked up to 550hp. We needed to do a lot of performance tuning but the problem was we couldn't get an engine to last long enough to get any really good data. We could only get an engine to last about 7 minutes at full power before it would throw a rod. Literally the only thing I did was swap out our stock (Valvoline) mineral-based oil with Royal Purple full synthetic. With that change alone I could get the engine to last over 500hrs at full power! Once we got the tuning dialed in it was my job to make all the necessary mechanical changes to get the engine to survive on "stock" oil. Those changes included changing the piston crown geometry, injector spray angles, piston cooling chamber geography, piston cooling nozzle targeting, oil cooler construction, redoing the oil filter lines, changing to a ceramic coating on the piston top ring, adding a phosphate coating to the piston skirts, and improving engine cooling, among other things. All to get the engine to survive on stock oil when Royal Purple was good enough by itself without those changes! That stuff is crazy good!!

    My two cents on Royal purple.... I run Royal Purple in my TDI diesel, that I purchased with 163000 miles on the odometer. Just from looking in the valve cover, I could see that the top end was black and had some noticeable carbon buildup on the head and between the cam lobes. The original owner had always used Castrol gtx on 3000 mile change intervals. I changed the oil just a couple days after getting the car home, switching to Royal Purple HPS, basically for its increased detergent and lubricant properties. I planned to extend my change intervals to counter the increased cost of the oil. After two changes, and sending a used oil sample in for analysis each time, I have noticed that the inside of the valve cover on my engine is now virtually spotless, along with the cam lobes. Also, the lab that analyzed my oil has said that the oil is capable of safely going over 15000 miles without any negative effects on its lubrication properties. Analysis has proven that my filter also is working well at 15000. So after doing this research on my own, I feel that Royal Purple is proving to be well worth the money. Also, the 3000 mile oil change doesn’t apply to today’s high quality oils. This is my experience... I suggest everyone use your own judgment in your situation.

    I have used Castrol synthetic for many years in my trucks and my car it has always been great for me. The reason i liked it is because when i first used it in my 75' Plymouth Duster and i was amazed at how good it was. My brother took it for a drive and was missing a plug in the engine to give it oil pressure. So it ran on low oil pressure for a good 10 min. or more. Back in '96. And it's still running great today. The other reason i like Castrol is that i had put it in my '96 Dodge Dakota at about 120 000 km. It had noisy lifters and after i had put it in it ran smooth and it cleared up the noisy lifters. And it's still going today even after my brother inlaw bought it in 2011. And i think it has over 400,000 km on it now. So i think no matter what synthetic oil you buy it is going to be good for for your engine.

    There are actually differences in oils. Pennsylvania oils (Pennzoil, Quaker State) are paraffin based oils, unlike Valvoline or Mobil which are based on western/midwestern crude. It is important to change the oil in your cars engine on a timely basis; oil doesn't break down, it gets dirty. Keeping clean oil will extend the life of your engine much further than using additives. All that having been said, there are good products on the market to help clean the workings of the engine, and Royal Purple is one of them. They're not necessary for every oil change, but they are healthy for your engine from time to time. Don't just poo-poo this young man's test. As mentioned in the body of the (mostly useless) comments, he DID at least tear the engine down to see if the Royal Purple helped, and the majority of those responding wouldn't have a clue how to even START a project like that. So, take those comments with a spoonful of salt, not just a grain.

      I have a 3.6 chevy engine with VVT and Direct Injection. Did timing on it and when i pulled out the vvt solinoids they were caked with gunk. Im suspecting thats why timing went bad, because the sludge got into vvt solinoids and the phasers and the tensioners. I installed brand new vvt solinoids to prevent the old ones clogging up. New timing kit as well with new tensioners. Not a cheap kit, bought high quality. My theory is to run a thinner oil such as 5w20 or something that flows faster to unclogg it. 5w30 is whats recommended. In theory a thinner oil that flows faster will more likely unclogg those screens inside the engine rather than using a thicker oil. Im scared to use a engine cleaner or flusher because if you know about the Hi-feature V6 3.6 they have a poor head gasket design. Im scared that the cleaner will make it worse and damage the engine. I want to run royal purple like you said, pour it in and let it clean out the engine and then do another oil change with new filter, how long did u run RP in your engine before you changed it? Also, my engine is probably filled with so much gunk so I might want to do like a hundred miles or something like that, maybe do 3 RP oil changed or something. When the heads and timing chains were taken off, a 200,000 mile internals looked like the engine had no more than 120,000 miles. The engine was so clean internally that it was unbelievable what we were seeing. The cross-hatches that the engine came with from factory were still very visible after 200,000 miles. I hope this helps you.. I was introduced to Royal Purple around 1999/2000.. Here's the good part, though I started with a fresh eng here are my findings..
    I am heavily into the sand dunes and at the time was running a 2442 VW turbo efi engine that I built myself with a lot of good parts..My test started this way, after 1st breaking in the cam for about 15 min @ 2000 rpm on 30 wt crap oil and changing..Another round of 30 wt crap oil for about 10 gallons of 110 race gas..As I felt the eng get more responsive I changed the oil again as the rings had seated.. Now for the fun part..
    20/50 Royal Purple street oil not race oil and when I did this test they didn't offer their high zinc formula.. I ran my sand car for 2 seasons at Glamis Sand Dunes in California, approximately 6 - 3 day trips per season with approximately 120 + hrs of run time per season under boost conditions.. Every couple of trips I would change the oil filter and top off the oil but never changed the oil in it for 2 seasons...At the end of the 2nd season I tore down the engine for inspection..I took an oil sample and sent it out for analysis.. The long and short of the test.. Normal no excessive wear.. Here's the fun part as I have never seen this until this engine came apart on any engine I've built in the past until Royal Purple entered the scene.. 100% polished bearings..I never seen a polished bearing in my life til that day..Plenty of worn bearings, copper bearings, etc..
    From that point on I became a distributor for Royal Purple but I was ahead of my time as it was big on the east coast and mid west but not in Ca.. I can say their assembly lube Maxx Tuff is amazing stuff..Super sticky and stays where you put it.. Also there gear oils are amazing.. My newest sand car runs a quad cam turbo subi with a Mendeola gearbox and I was recommended to run a 85/140 gear oil of a different manufacturer, but being under the spell of Royal Purple I found the RP 85/140 was too thick and didn't shift right, so I stepped down to RP 75/140.. Transaxle shifts as smooth as butter.. The early Mendeola gear boxes had a problem with the main shaft bearing failure and bad pitting of the ring & pinion..3 seasons of 75/140 RP with 0 pitting of gears and main shaft bearing not making noise like they are know for and they are obnoxiously loud when they go bad.. Mendeola said I could have gotten another year out of the gearbox before service was needed.. I have a friend that was also into VW's.. He had a hydralic lifter 2276 air cooled VW in his buggy and had to run 50wt oil to get his lifters to pump up.. I couldn't get him to switch to 20/50, but he did try 50wt RP and for the 1st time ever not only did his lifters stay pumped up they were dead quiet and so was his engine even with open exhaust header.. He said his motor has never been so quiet.. Another satisfied customer.. Also I have a Samurai I use for rock crawling, RP20/50 in the eng as it is wore out, RP 75/90 in trans & t case & front and rear diffs.. The sami is a 94 which I took custody of in 2004 and have run RP in it since.. No failures with RP..Lots of broken parts due to extreme gearing but not oils fault.. Closing note, Samurai had a leaky t case boot and the t case filled with water along with RP 75/90..I had a friend rebuild it for me and change to a lower gear set..When he drained the oil he couldn't believe how much water came out and thought for sure it would be full of rust.. To his surprise 0 rust.. RP has amazing rust prohibitors in there oils.. Now he got to see 1st hand what I saw 19 yrs ago..RP is an amazing product.. I have a friend that sells Amsoil, he can keep it.. I'm in it for the long run with RP.. Have seen too many good things come out of it..
    Hope this helps you & check your bearings to see if they are polished like mine were..
    Respectfully,
    Mark Geletzke

I started taking it to the Toyota dealership and they switched it to their semi-synthetic and the consumption stopped. Some engines don’t like Mobil1. I should also add that there is a recall on the 2006-11 Toyota 2.4 engine for possible oil consumption. If it uses 1 quart per 1200 miles, they change the pistons. Toyota has increased the engine warranty. Mine uses 1qt every 5k miles. Acceptable for an engine with over 100k miles on it.

      I’ve looked into quite a few brands of oils with Blackstone Oil Lab reports to see what to run in a brand new 4Runner and chose the genuine Toyota 0W-20 for its high Molybdenum content and other carrying agents.
      Following a routine oil change interval will net you better results rather than relying on just the oil to last and going longer which will slowly create buildup
      If I was going for absolute performance I would be looking into what temperature thresholds and properties I need to work within and etc to be the deciding factor.

      @DESTROY white supremacy BY ANY MEANS NECESSARY not really the case for any product, you can test it with a particular product but that doesn’t mean the user is going to use it exactly the way you tested it. So your testing is now meaningless.
      Weight doesn’t exist, neither does NOACK etc. What matters is Kinetic viscosity. You don’t know if that car manufactured in the Southern US is going to be taken to the Arctic or Mexico City or Brazil. The oil that works in Florida, doesn’t work in Canada.
      Where I live I can get -40 in January or February, my cars used to run on a SAE 40, how the heck is that going to help in -40?? It’s not, we use a 0W20, it’s never 120 degrees, hardly ever gets into the 90’s. Not to mention that you don’t know the driving habits of the user.
      You can’t build an engine for a specific type of driver or environment. You have to build it for all environments, all driving types. If the purchaser uses a 0w20 on the track that’s his fault sure but if you don’t test out that scenario??
      You have to design for every scenario and you can bet what’s recommended only works for that new car off the lot, after that you have to make an informaed decision. In cold weather climates there is some risk of running a 10 or 20W oil (you likely need a 5 or 0W), in a hot weather climate there is some risk of running a SAE 20 or 30 (you likely need a SAE 40 or 50).

      I had a 1988 Nissan Pickup with Z28 4 cylinder. I got it at 88,000 miles, changed the oil every 2500 miles without fail and drove it gently with a 4 speed manual trans. I used mostly penzoil, sometimes castrol and valvoline, sometimes synthetic but never exceeded the mileage. Did a valve job at about 140k when it burned an exhaust valve alright. Second valve job at 250K when i screwed up changing the timing chain, which didn't need it (the tensioner was worn to a rubber nub though) and bent a valve. I decided to do an in car overhaul because of the mileage (again, didn't need it but i only found that out after the parts were out). The timing chain, like new with no bow. Reused the pistons and the rod bearings since they were fine too. Changed the rings, since they were out (I didn't bother miking the rings but there was nothing wrong with them either, no oil eating, blowing or noise). I bought a ridge reamer but didn't need that either, there was no ridge at the top of the cylinders - at all. I honed the cylinders of course. Then put it all back together with great care, cranked it but wouldn't start!!! Instead of panicking, i thought for a minute, realized the distributor was installed backwards (shaft), fixed it, car started instantly. I drove the truck for another 50K, At almost 300K miles, and driving this truck into the ground really, it wouldn't idle so couldn't pass the GOT-DAMN SMOG... the guy looked at the smog numbers, which were just marginal for anal Caliornia smog checks, and told me to give up. Drove the truck away determined to fix it, but I got angry and revved the engine and the Got-damn distributor shaft broke...that was the end. I sold the truck to a pick a part. The guy driving the tow truck told me i ought to keep it! Told him I couldn't deal with it anymore and I already had a 2002 Camry to drive so, it really was the end. The yearly smog PITA was what killed this truck, NOT wear and tear.

    Quality synthetic oils have always been super engine cleaners. I changed to Mobile 1 in an old Subaru once, drove across the Sierra Nevada to the Owens Valley and changed my oil because it had turned black. My valve covers were 100% clean. Now if I did it again I would add 1 quart synthetic oil to my regular oil and monitor the cleaning process to clean the engine more slowly and then convert to 100% synthetic oil full time.

    Varnish on non-bearing surfaces really doesn't harm anything. It is nice to not have it though.
    I used to run Castrol GTX 10W-30 in an IL4 and 20W-50 in a V6. Both engines were sparkly clean inside wherever the oil touched. Back then I changed oil & filter every 2,500 miles. Oil was cheap, less than $1/quart. I used Baldwin filters.

  • @jonasthemovie
    @jonasthemovie Před 4 lety +6

    Sludge is not doing any damage sitting on surfaces. But it does damage in the strainer, oil pump and filter. Switching to a cleaning oil dislodging alot of sludge might clog up the system fast starving the engine for oil.

  • @gidderman
    @gidderman Před 4 lety +4

    Use a really, really good oil filter when cleaning an engine out, and change the oil and filter often the first few times You want as much of that particle crap in the filter, not your bearings. Also note that really bad engines may be susceptible to oil pump failure as all that crap will first hit the oil pump before it goes through the filter... Sometimes deeming it not worth it...

Seafoam allows the use of your car until the next oil change without damage (or so they say). Also, what kind/type of transmission fluid, or does it matter?

    I got started on Royal Purple when I was stationed in California. The Corps was very serious about motorcycle safety. We had a few CHPs come do a handling class and got to talking. The Cali Highway Patrol runs Royal Purple in everything, and will run 15,000 miles on an oil change with no problems, they also pack on the miles so if they had to change every 3, 5, 7.5, 10K miles they'd stay in the shop. It's all I run and I've switched 2 Tacoma's, 4 Jeeps, and 2 Mustangs. All are running better, and I have pulled the covers and oil pans and seen dramatically cleaner engines. Like you showed the first few oil changes had some sludge, which is why I first pulled the covers. Regular maintenance goes a long way, and I'll only use Royal Purple as it has given me increased cleaniness.
