What Is A Supercomputer?

  • China held the lead for the last 5 years, but the United States now has the world's fastest supercomputer. The machine, called Summit, was built for Oak Ridge National Laboratory in partnership with IBM and NVidia, and is designed for AI applications.
    Today's supercomputers are made up of thousands of connected processors, and their speed has grown exponentially over the past few decades. The first supercomputer, released in 1964, was called the CDC 6600. It used a single processor to achieve 3 million calculations per second. While that may sound impressive, it is tens of thousands of times slower than an iPhone.
    The Lab Director of Oak Ridge, Thomas Zacharia, says, "I've always thought of supercomputing as a time machine, in the sense that it allows you to do things that most other people will be able to do in the future." As he explains, smartphones today are more powerful than the supercomputers used in the 1990s to work on the Human Genome Project.

      @schrodingerscat3912 Před 5 lety +7

      @@soundsofaeneas yes, a quantum computer theoretically can be used to perform any operation much better than a modern computer. The point that was made at the start of this thread is that, it is impractical and unlikely that quantum computing will be used for gaming/VR etc in the beginning because they will be too expensive, large, and rare on the market.
      Another issue is that initially they may be exclusive to large corporations and governments because they will be capable of cracking the most advanced encryption which is a huge security issue for any country. It's possible that after a while they will adapt to the consumer market and be applied to VR/AR etc.

      A general purpose computing task would be lets say doing a floating point calculation like multiplication or division. But what if you want to do many inferences at the same time? Then you would use a gpgpu for parallelism. But then Nvidia came up with tensor core which basically allows you to have more optimized operations for ai specific tasks such as a faster parallel matrix transformations or something. Its just a marketing gimmick tbh lol.
