Ngarta Tombalbaye: The Strange Dictator from Chad

  • This was Francois Ngarta Tombalbaye, the former President of the nation of Chad and one of the most strange dictators the continent has ever had.
When he was at the helm, Tombalbaye put in place some strange policies which raised quite a few eyebrows and led to a disgruntled populace… For instance, as part of an authenticity campaign called Chaditude, he ordered all high government officials, civil servants and military officers to undergo a tradition called Yondo, which was a sometimes fatal initiation ritual.
The Yondo ordeal, which Tombalbaye himself underwent as an adolescent, is known to involve flogging, facial scarring, drugging and mock burials…

My name is Naimbai Njerakey and I approve this message. I belong to the N'gambay ethnicity: The largest ethnic group in Chad. The N'gambay and the Sar (Tombalmbaye's ethnicity) are like cousins. Our culture, customs, and languages are very similar. Some may even call N'gambay and Sar dialects and not distinct languages. This video is well-researched and put together. It's refreshing to hear a knowledgeable person speak about my country. Keep up the great work.

I was a 12 year old kid in Nigeria when Murtala was assassinated in 1975 but the spend the rest of my childhood and education in the UK and lost touch with the complex politics of Africa e.g. I never understood the basics of the war in Angola.

Now, please check out these FACTS that are on the Web: "In 250 years of existence as a nation, the US has fought against 29 sovereign countries. (In Fact, since 1785, we have been involved, for 231 years, in some kind of war. And this wars, against all varieties of nations. From going against the Sultan of Morocco, to invading the tiny island of Grenada, 1983. Well, this means that in our entire history, we have only had 17 years of peace, and even fewer, cuz here the almost 5 years of our Civil War (Union/Confed 1861‒1865), are Not counted, since this war was not with another country, but against us. And the wars against the Native Nations of America either are not counted, for the same reason). Anyway: We fought against 29 countries. We have "Grown" 711 the size of our territory from the original 13 colonies. Our Economic, Political and Military development was established thanks to the Piracy, the Slavery, the Massacres, the Opium Trade or Cocaine Traffic, and the Weakness of many abused sovereign nations. We have provoked with total impunity, 12 Genocides and 9 Massacres, ‒inside and outside our own borders‒, and Assassinations of Gov’t. Leaders, Coups d'État and Economic Blockades in 6 UN member nations. Between 1947 and 1989, the US tried to change other nations gov’ts 73 times. It includes 66 covert Ops. And 7 overt ones. In Civil Wars: The US has taken advantage of and intervened without justification in the following Civil Wars: In Marquesas Island. (Massacre. 1813). US Forces seize Nuku Hiva Island (French Polynesia 1813), and establish here «The First US Naval Base», in the Pacific. This historical fact is important, cuz in 1813, the US had NO Territorial Land nor Maritime Rights in the Pacific Ocean, until 1848, when the US seized California and other Mexican territories facing the Pacific. In Haiti. (1813 and 1901 and then 1915-1919-1934-2001). In the Philippines. (1898-1902. Genocide. One Million people dead). In Hawaii. (1889 and 1890-1893 and 1901). In Cuba. In Russia. (1918-1920). In the "Republic Banana Wars" of Central America. (Massacre. 1912-1934). In Dominican Republic. (1916-1924 and 1965-1966). In Honduras. We, the US, assistance Saddam Hussein against Iran. (More than half a million deaths in ten years. 1980-1990). Support and funding of the Khmer Rouge of Pol Pot. (Genocide 1980-1982). In Angola-Namibia. (Massacre. 1980-1981-1984). Intervention in Grenada (1983). Here, in Grenada, the US Rangers attack lasted 6 hours, since the tiny Island has no Army, no Navy nor Air Force. The Ranges fought against 287 fearsome Police Officers. Actually, half of these Cops, cuz the other half had not yet come to work the afternoon shift. LOL. In Chad, support the Dictator and Genocide François “Ngarta” Tombalbaye. (1960-1972 and Intervention 1982-1986 and 2007). In Egypt, in the “Arab Spring” (2010-2012). Coup in Equatorial Guinea. Thanks for another video. To me, I see his attempt at popularising Yondo as a way to unite all the diverse peoples of Chad under one tradition. And, of course, it would be his own. With the discontent from the Northern and Central regions as well as the conviction that Christians had against Yondo, it was doomed to fail.
Had he tried to get the leaders of ALL of the peoples in Chad involved, they all could have come up with a better Africanisation plan. That way, the Northerners wouldn’t have felt the need to turn to Libya. Tribalism is one of the things that ruined Chad back then as it had to several other African nations.
I hope the people of Chad are doing well. I would like to hear the views of Chadians on this matter.

I sometimes think that with the strong cultures in Africa the modern concept of "dictatorship" could have taken a far more interesting path had these men been more competent and normal. Imagine a "strong man" who has all (or most) power like an ancient roman dictator but is both truly capable and loved. However, with everything unfortunate that happened to these nations and human nature itself this wondering is just a wild guess.

There's research (available online) regarding the hotspots of African conflicts; most of them intersect where ethnic, religious and cultural differences occur in a single country.
One of the worst decisions OAU made was to proclaim these borders sancrosanct instead of uniting eg. Niger and northern Tchad.
These differences led to Ogaden war, South Sudan, Tchad, Biafran war, etc. Usually it happens when two groups are equal in strength, or where one is weaker but has irredentism of a nearby state (Ogaden, North Kenya).
Such a shame that they chose not to wrest with it.
Aside from the Muslim-Christian divide (which is also a cultural, political and ecological divide), there was Ruanda and Burundi and a few others.

Wasn't that a case with most early leaders in any country that gained independence?

Africa is such a beautiful continent but definitely there will always be unrest due to endless greed and power hunger and minimum empathy.

As little known as Chad may be it’s history is so incredible I hope a talented historian will write it all down in one book. I remember reading that the novel ‘The Coup’ by American author John Updike was inspired by events in Chad but don’t know if the leader it portrays is one of them or a composite. I would be much more interested in a nonfiction book about them all.

I know President Macias of Equatorial Guinea and Mobutu in the Congo both claimed they were going to ‘Africanise’ both countries. I think that proves people should at least be concerned if any future President makes the same promise.

I once read somewhere that Tombalbaye's yondo ritual had the men split the head of the penis with a sharp razor leaving it forked like a snake's tongue. Very brutal indeed.

Millions and millions have suffered, instead a sense that history to adopt a life of benevolence, they have become dictators and dictators to perpetuate the suffering. They are the only ones who can understand what has happened to the souls they are.
