Nice shohin trident and the root flare is developing well. I think that many refer to the fusing of surface roots as you described to form a solid horizontal mass as a tortoise shell or turtle back.

Beautiful specimen Trident. The roots should develop well in that pot. The pot was a great choice of color and size too. Where do you get your pots from? I’ve had a hard time finding what I need. Keep up the good work.
It is tradition to place maple trees in the blue pots precisely because of the beautiful contrast with autumn colour of the leaves. Never mind, it’s your bonsai and if you enjoy it more in “caramel” pot who’s going to stop you? 🤷🏼♂️

Repot deciduous when leaves just start to bud out.
For repotting, What do u look for in tropical, evergreen, pine, juniper?
Pine and juniper I want to see them starting to push Nee growth. Tropical mid summer when they are actively growing
