I hate the whole “cringe” thing. If there are people having fun in a community and are feeling like they belong, just like you said, it’s honestly beautiful.
I mean it is still cringe to me but i never hate on it or hate on the poeple, i just laugh privately and go about my day
@@Vide501 yea i saw a video of a middle school dance a few weeks ago n grown ass adults were calling it cringe. i thought back to my middle school dance n realized, yea it is cringe, but still ts was lit n i know everybody there had a blast 💯
we have to accept and embrace cringe. Most things in hindsight are cringe. Remember Kanye's shutter shades? Or those goofy ahh scarves lil wayne had everyone wearing? Super cringe but also iconic
well said
@PatCc

I think the word cringe is just being commonly misused. Those Kanye stutter shades only make you cringe cuz we partook in it, and wouldn't do it as adults, but at the time? They were lit, and now? They're as Patrick said, Iconic. So that was never cringe, we cringe at ourselves, what is cringe, is the two friends in highschool that made out constantly on other people's lockers but swore they were just friends. Silly bands aren't cringe, the kids in ROTC who constantly tried to make other people feel like they knew what they wanted and life and had shit figured out were cringe, cuz they were just as lost as the rest of us.
What's killing hip-hop for me is people bite each others sound. That used to be a career killer back in the day.
yup! I cover that at 9:50
You have to try to stay fresh and new while staying within what is liked or expected in hip hop. I struggle with that aspect of music making.
Hip hop is alive and well. It’s just not in the mainstream no more. People all over are innovating constantly but you gotta seek it out. Tiara whack ,run the jewels, Aesop rock, Edan, Danny Brown, the list goes on

Hip hop is not dying… community, belonging, friendship, togetherness, and humanity is
Is it ever
Which should mean we should in some way see a trend back towards all of those things in some way. Especially of so much of us are feeling the same feelings at once. Whether that change is in our lifetime or the next remains to be seen but history shows that humanity usally changes together for the most part. Easy to feel down but I can't help but think that things will be better.
The world is decaying from evil and there’s really nothing we can do to fix it 😢
I genuinely think forums were the internet's true purpose at its peak. There's too many eyes on us now to go back to that genuine communication online.
those things died a long time ago
people have been saying "rap is dying" since the birth of rap, mainstream rap has never been where the quality resides and you know that
What kind of lie is this? Mainstream Rap has had quality since the 90s to the early 2010s. There was a feeling amongst the general public that there was a common cause uniting us. If it wasn't Drake, Cole, Kendrick, Future and 2 Chainz or Big Sean, it was Lil Wayne, Kanye, Jay-Z, 50 Cent and so on. Stop the cap.

I literally had this exact thought a few days ago. Everything is going to crap..... not just TV, not just movies, but literally everything cars, shoes, clothes, houses, food and something being new doesn't even matter anymore...... this over consumption culture is just beginning to rear its ugly head.... it's kinda eerie because where do we as people go from such an excessive form of over consumption
I think we’re all just depressed as a society. It’s hard to be happy when you constantly consume negative content or content that makes you feel negative.
Edit: didn’t mean to type that emoji 💀
@@smaaron_j_46 I definitely agree
Maybe i can understand with tv, movies, house, but cars, shoes, clothes and food? Yeah i think you're tripping right here
@@assassin8636I agreed with them on cars, but the other three you mentioned are what I also disagree with them on
There are always recalls on food and cars. Clothes and shoes are mass produced and not made with the amount of quality that they used to have. Mass production is not good because it means workers are exploited, and it brings environmental pollution into play and also contributes to global warming.
Your breakdown on the sound cloud turned internet rappers era is 100% accurate. 2014-2018 era for sound cloud music and fashion was a renaissance. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
This is one of the greatest videos made in the modern era. The last sentence was a tear jerker, thanks pat.
As someone who studied economics, the choice overload point is spot on. Hip-hop isn’t dead, the medium we consume hip-hop on is just oversaturated. Not to mention the pure toxicity that surrounds online music communities nowadays.. I definitely enjoy music more when I’m not reading through a bunch of negative comments or reviews on social media. Still one thing is for sure, Father Time is undefeated. As Frank Ocean said, we’ll never be those kids again. That may sound sad, but it’s something everyone has to accept at some point or another. The main reason I had more fun with music in the 2010’s is because I was in my adolescence (teenage years) and there were so many first experiences that made that time period so exciting. Not to mention during that time frame is when most people develop their taste for music, so of course music is going to hit different. Still, despite the fact that I’m aging, I still feel like the music industry and culture as a whole are so exhausting anymore. I think keeping a healthy distance from it and returning every so often to see what’s new is a solid approach.
Yeah definitely, really like what Pat said on that. I was pondering the same a while ago
Well said
the fact that y’all think it’s music, baffles me.
It’s a mirror it’s a door
Most of you don’t have time to listen through, when you find the one you will be shocked.
The ones you know don’t even come close to being the one.
One verse can change the whole world
@@yes-vy5nf well for me personally, I definitely agree with what you're saying here, there's a lot of good music out in the world and I'm actively looking for it constantly. I was agreeing with the first point of the "choice overload" thing, being the reason why not a lot of people want to look for music because of themselves feeling like it's oversaturated. We just have to scout out for what we like ourselves now :)
Getting my own music taste is the best thing to happen to me and originally yes I was essentially alone in my music taste but luckily I have found some likeminded music listeners to share my interests with and it’s grea. Ps: I think people that have music taste find communities online instead of in person which is something you might’ve missed
they do find communities online but those are becoming harder and harder to find. They used to be abundant
I’ve found some of my favourite artists in suggestions from comments on very unknown artists songs tbf

This is the truth, everybody has a unique music taste, they just don’t want to admit
@@Draek12347 it’s not hard to admit for some. I make music I want to hear. Not sure if others like it. I like a wide variety of music. It comes out in the music I make. 👍🏽
13:30 This is exactly why I listen to late 80's 90's metal, grunge, hardcore etc bc there was once a community. A style, mindsets, opinions, philosophies. Today, it's be whoever and do whatever, but it can be nice to have cliques and small communities
fr I switched to rock and metal and never looked back
This video is exactly what I needed to hear. You genuinely put all my feelings about the subject in one video and I really appreciate you for that. Especially the part about how you can either listen to the big mainstream artist and “fit in” or you could listen to what you enjoy and not have anyone to talk to about it. I go through this with my friend group all the time and I love them but I just wish we could have more in depth convos about music.
The ending clicked so hard. I feel so lonely when I listen to music by myself. Or when I play games by myself. Or watch movies by myself. If I’m the only one experiencing, it almost doesn’t feel worth it sometimes. That’s why you feel more “connected” when playing online games, or games that just recently came out.
Let me tell you my friend if you learn how to enjoy things by yourself, it can be beautiful. Finding new music or watching an excellent movie just by yourself and your own thoughts can be nice if you allow it to be and don’t compare it to experiences with others. There will always be times you’re alone so better learn to enjoy it!🫡
@@zonneP already learned it lol. I’m alone 90% of the time. The feeling of loneliness doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy something. It’s just lonely sometimes. That’s what lack of community feels like.
@@echo2551Yeah tbh, it’s fun to chill and just mellow out playing some single player but it’s always on my mind “A friend would feel better playing with me, and I’d have more fun”

This video really hit how I’ve felt for about the last year or so. Culture just feels so dry right now. Im not even past the age of 23 but I feel so bored of a lot of whats coming out. Games, music, fashion everything feels like it has no real soul or difference right now. I really appreciate this video, because imo its exactly what me and many others have been feeling. Im hoping things change but when people say rap is dead, it feels more like music and more is kinda “dead”. Nobody is going to try to actual be experimental and create their own thing anymore, its just who can copy a style that has worked now.
Dude I completely agree I feel like 2021 was the last year where everything felt refreshing
Same brother. The feeling was setting in before the pandemic but I think the pandemic was definitely an accelerant. Perhaps this was inevitable. I don't know where we're going but maybe society will just decay and erode itself until there's nothing left. I personally think that's more realistic than the whole World War 3 narrative
carti will change the sound again in January
I mean i have to disagree on the whole games, fashion, and everything phrase cause i wouldn't say it doesn't have soul, it's just not what it used to be
Amazing comment and I’m much older than you are but I feel the same. Media has become all about the cash and that’s thanks in part by the algorithms and the “need” to be visible. I’m sure an artistic revolution is coming soon
Social media has destroyed everyone. I've seen most of my friends become shells of their former selves. My group chat is indistinguishable from top reddit and Instagram comments. They literally only talk about media that several million people already talk about and actively hate anything obscure in all mediums. Its weird as hell

Love this video Patrick. Really hits home with how I feel about life in general right now. Dry and bland culture everywhere, saturated with bs. What's needed is for people to go back to using dummy phones and downloading mp3s, just connecting more irl.

“If you want the good stuff, you gotta dig for it, but most of you won’t” - Patrick Cc:
Trends is the main problem, because people are too lazy to look for other artists to listen to…
there is no incentive to look for new stuff. It's like you are ALWAYS being fed new shit thats "good enough." Even just 10 years ago you had to dig really deep to find different music but it was rewarding, and there was a community waiting for you.
@@PatCcI'd like to praise your aux battles for helping me find some new great music. Also with the internet it should be easier than ever to find music. Emphasis however on the should.
@@PatCc It’s branding and human nature. People are given ideas. And people assume too much. Either love it or they’re salty. Then people disappear. Then communities fall apart. Then people forget. So they stop trying. Then civilisation collapses. It’s a reward system, and why go through the effort to build businesses, brands, record songs and start adventures if people are just going to get salty. All I know is adults is just talking shit about other people and drinking alcohol. So I’d rather be at home alone, making music by myself, then at the pub talking shit about other people trying to make an effort in life..
That has been my feeling for years. People complain there are no more guitar solos and all the voices are Autotuned while I'm listening to a modern song with a guitar solo and a vocalist that isn't Autotuned.
it's not very common these days though. We need to bring music like this back@@orlock20
Important video. Everyone NEEDS community, and our current culture is more antagonistic to that than ever before.
Except opium that shit can catch on fire
American culture is extremely anti-social always has been but recently it seems as though it's getting worse, the extreme atomization and anonymization that comes with being in a big city and a lack of mobility and safety in general for todays youth caused them to be inside more and so that got them online, then once they were online they were drawn to vloggers, streamers, and letsplayers, etc in a bid to find the sense of community that they sorely lack IRL and the lockdowns only exacerbated this trend.
@@jghifiversveiws8729
The problem is that community isn't as accessible as the mediums we've become used to (ie. recommended or trending videos/movies/games). For example, I've joined a Playboi Carti community on X/Twitter, but that place only caters to me when I'm thinking about Opium or trap music. CZcams, in comparison, recommends me whatever I've been enjoying in the past months, consistently following whatever I enjoy and replicating it.
But which one really caters towards loneliness?
Clearly, there's just an influx in content, which makes us even more unique/isolated tastewise than other people, which makes sticking to one mainstream or niche group easier to find people like you. Building and retaining a unique identity through the internet weakens your chances to find an irl group that "gets" you.
u said so much i've been feeling, dealing with and talking about for the past few years, i love u pat
Fantastic video. As a teacher, this really helped me to better understand what the next generation is living through right now. I'm always worried about people becoming "chronically online" or replacing person-to-person connection with online parasocial relationships, but the way you explain that partly as a symptom of the loss of third places really helped me to reframe those problems. Thank you!
I relate to this video heavily, i enjoy artists that i wouldnt even consider fringe, but as soon as im in a party setting im completely lost on what's popular 😂

Hats off man
Dude I’ve been thinking about everything you pointed out in this video for years , and I’m glad you put it together so well and explained so well what’s really going on with the music industry
This video needs to blow up bro, I don't even know how to change this cycle but it needs attention. Wonderfully put man.
I agree with the thesis but I try not to get sucked in to feedback loop of hopelessness. While it’s true we as humans are becoming more and more fragmented, there are just as many initiatives to form community and create new culture in the place of the old world. The first step to solving a problem is realizing there’s a problem to begin with, that’s the place we’re in right now. It’s a painful, frustrating and discouraging place to be in but I implore anyone who sees this not to let your hopelessness consume you. The old world is dying and the new one is struggling to be born.
So what's your point here really?
@@assassin8636 my point is it’s exceedingly easy to fall into cycles of apathy and despair and we owe it to ourselves to not fall into them. Outside of the framework of hip hop music, the phenomenon Pat describes in this video is endemic to every part of our existence at this current moment in time. When everything around us seemingly dropping the ball it’s up to ourselves to continue to try and connect, find common ground, find a cause to rally behind, create art, create another wave, keep the fire burning so to speak.
That's the thing though, there's so many people profiting handsomely off of the current cultural climate to really want to change it: lonely, depressed, isolated, and exhausted consumers are some of the easiest to sell products too. Look at any advertisement from recent decades and the message is clear "buy this product and you'll have access to the sense of belonging or lifestyle or happiness that all of these paid actors or your favorite celeb/influencer obviously have. See! Doesn't that sound great!" As the hyenas cackle all the way to the bank.
I 100% agree wit everything said in this video. I have felt the same for a few years now and it’s weird. One thing u spoke to that is powerful is that music turned into an individual experience instead of a communal one.
Man. BRILLIANTLY put! Everything you said in this video is spot on. As a music enthusiast, I appreciate you putting this into words!

Great video, prevalent topic. A sense of community is difficult to build when financial gain is the foundation.
The end of this video is a great point. I heard from another yt vid that humans today enjoy things like music and rhythm because when we evolved to like it, it united us together, and therefore helped us survive. Without other people, music becomes empty.
What you said at the end isn't always the case

Hip hop is evolving. As a producer its hard catching up at times. You have to evolve with it.
Shi is Dead playboy😂

A great video essay and interesting take. Appreciate the unpopular opinion stance you took. Too many options is definitely to blame. Especially because when we do take a chance on discovering new artists and it fails, we're left disappointed. We need to find an industry to compare this to - or an analogy - so that we can find an existing solution for this problem. Where do we go when we have too many options? The opposite structure is one where we have only a few labels, or TV networks, or companies responsible for deciding all of what we consume (and as a result, there's less opportunity and more barrier to entry, which has its own cons).
it's super interesting right? Like where do we go.. can we even recover from this?? I'm on a mission lol
@@PatCc bro i think movies/tv have had a similar problem. Perhaps the answer is consuming via a credible source - like HBO for example: as big as they've got, they haven't lost integrity or seemingly been corrupted. It's reliable and quality content that the consumer can trust. Netflix got too saturated (they had to create a ton of original content to compete with already existing networks like HBO, Disney, etc.) and is losing credibility to the consumer.
This discussion also reminds me of the food/retail industries too. How do we know to consume? Food/retail decisions are sadly often determined by money and convenience. There are brackets. It's almost hierarchical. (It also can be political: Michelin stars, high-end fashion)
Music is tough though because it's practically free and accessible to everyone. The power comes from a solid co-sign and community (as you said).
I think the solution will have to be a return to traditional values, like authenticity, word of mouth referrals, experience (travis scott concerts), and unique branding. But easier said than done 😩
@@t2themooni don't know what you're trying to say here
@@assassin8636he said som real shi tho
@@flamingspaghettibut even what was safe and popular at that time sounds better than most of what we hear today bc there was quality control. Going back is def not the answer but maybe artists making a collective effort to create communal experiences with their music and shows could bring back some of that spark. If the bigger rap artists like Cole Kendrick or even Drake would lead that charge it could start a wave but I don't think they know how or even understand this issue.
Keep pushing Patric, we love your work and delivery 💝

We've already seen an explosion in several new genres in the past 20 years and a slew of sub-genres of rap in the past 10...all due to emerging technologies allowing people to express and create in ways unprecedented than ever before. If it wasn't for the advent of music streaming sites like SoundCloud, or software/hardware being so accessible to the point where I could have a makeshift studio in a fucking storm drain, (which wouldn't be a terrible idea for acoustics🤔...) we wouldn't be talking about how *saturated* these sub-genres are! We're only in a down period, imagine the genres when AI technology improves by order of magnitudes more! We're only just beginning, I feel.
@@KatSpicert what don't you guys understand. Creativity is dead. The urgency to create a new genre is propelled through an active community that's actually interacting with music. Most people are too musically illiterate and ignorant nowadays. Look at how people are sampling records. They're basically just covering hit songs by rapping over them instead of cutting up and splicing different records from different artists. There hasn't been a new genre of music that's hit the mainstream in 20 years. We're not talking about sub-genres. We're talking about actual genres with their own unique styles, basic instrument choices and song structures.
@@saintkevinofficialthere are a lot of genres in underground. Like literally but yall dont wanna listen
banger video thank you for talking about this
I'm with you on the hip/hop concerts. I've been to 10+ concerts in the past 5 years and it's gotten to the point where I'm over them. I used to love concert day getting to the venue early asf. Being the first people in line with my friend only to spend the entire concert struggling for my life, and watching one of my favorite artists just running back and forth on stage acknowledging nobody in the crowd (other than a few artists who genuinely put on a great show). I went to two "pop" shows (Jon Bellion & Laroi) and those were my favorite experiences as I could stand and enjoy the music coming directly from my fav artist
As a producer it is easy to fine artists but it’s hard for me to fine new unique artist most of them ask me for beats that other artists use
Yeah i can completely understand that because the way music is now, you’re better off trying to clout chase off of another persons sound rather than actual be experimental with your own stuff. I think a decent example is how OsamaSon had so many people sayin he sounds like Ken Carson. Regardless of if u think its the case, too many people sound like another, nobody has a unique sound anymore so you really cant differentiate any artists. Nobody is really creating their own “genre in a genre” anymore so its hard to find different stuff without looking.
I feel like people are just now starting to getting tired of all this saturation specifically in music. Little story about my experience with this around late 2017 - early 2018 all i would listen to is mumble rap, trap, etc. It got to a point where i myself was getting tired of listening to the same old tired flow and same beats now mind you i would still listen to old school hip hop and a little bit of rock / alternative (TOOL is my favorite band of all time) i decided to cut all that type of music in general and focus on Old School hip hop and Straight Rock, Metal, and alternative. It was a good decision because i have found countless genres of music i didnt know existed. lmao never in a million years i would though i would listen to Elvis Presley.
bruh same, I was into rap from 2106 to 2020 and then i found rock, then recently metal. Won't look back now
Absolutely Phenomenal. Thx😎
Literally what I’ve been thinking for the last few years put into a video perfectly. Good job man earned a new subscriber!
I'm glad we're having these conversations cause this is 1000% facts. Capitalism is changing the way we promote & consume everything & it's causing people to have less time, energy, and money to get together and enjoy even the simplest of things like music.
YES YES YES !
the change is happening, it’s here and it’s now
I’ve been feeling this exact way for a while now and today, literally 4 hours ago I said to my family on the car ride home from flagstaff, “I’m having a music crisis.” They proceeded to laugh at the obscurity of what I said, but I meant it. I’ve been listening to the same music that I am tired of, not bad music, amazing music but it is stale.
Listen to YB you'll have music for days
i feel that way sometimes too. i recently started reexploring some funny joke type stuff i saw as a kid growing up by publio delgado and forgot how much i loved it. felt like meeting a childhood friend after years
if you want a rock and metal recs: deftones white pony album, green day's american idiot album, iowa album by slipknot, ride the lightning album by metallica, everlong and my hero by foo fighters, linkin park and limp bizkit (which has both rock and rap influences), nirvana's nevermind album, man in the box and would? by alice in chains, the ten album by pearl jam
I subscribed to you because of this holy shit you literally spit fax on everything happening rn the internet a gift and a curse
Man ! This some deep shit ...im gonna be honest i didn't like much of your past videos talking about who and who's downfall coz i felt like u were doin it for the views and didn't think their stories were interesting but this .....👌🏾 AMAZNG seems like sth u really care about. Greeeeeaaaat video
This is a very true title because people just aren't as creative for whatever reason these days. AI and things of that nature are the main reasons for things seeming boring. It's the outside world affecting the insides of hip-hop honestly.
very true, i talk about that at 12:50 !
at least watch the vid before commenting…
Ai is nowhere near being the majority of content, it is going in that direction, but it is not the current reason.
This Comment tells me that you haven't explored music
probably the most spot-on video i've seen in a minute
Great video as always patrick!!
Incredible video bro. Very thought provoking and even made me change my stance on some things. Well done. All I gotta say 🤷♂️
A lot of people are losing their minds that hip hop’s popularity is dying. It happened to rock too, starts in the underground and a few decades later it’s the genre dominating the charts. Then it slowly fades into the back and once in a while a band or 2 make it to the mainstream. Same will happen to hip hop, it’s the circle of life.
Getting into music is also really hard, and time consuming and sometimes feels like a chore, I like MF DOOM and kanye but trying to get through their whole catalogue and trying to get into something else other than rap is really hard, even though I like electronic music its hard to listen to.
if you want a metal recs: deftones white pony album, green day's american idiot album, iowa album by slipknot, ride the lightning album by metallica, everlong and my hero by foo fighters, linkin park and limp bizkit (which has both rock and rap influences), nirvana's nevermind album, man in the box and would? by alice in chains, the ten album by pearl jam. Try easing into it with rock, like george harrison, jimi hendrix, and rush.
What a great piece of media this was! Very interesting point of views and i can agree with just about everything you’re saying.
I’m glad that i curated a ”community” playlist on spotify with my best friend about 5 years ago. Our other friends and even random people have joined in to add their sense of the vibe we are going for there. No matter the genre, no matter the year it was published. We just add songs there that we think sound dope and fit the chill vibe.
Best of all we know for a fact that everyone listens to the most recently added ones and then when we hang out we discuss the songs we found and enjoy the music. From Barry White classics to Luciano Pavarotti opera, allthough mainly dope underground (also mainstream) rap :)
Sharing is caring❤
great video patrick so many time this gave me chills cause all the things you said were so real & I actually live it
ONE OF THE reasons is honestly i think shit is just changing, since we are growing up, alot of the music and content wont work us since we been overstimulated with it, but the next generations, or people thats born between 2008-2013 are the one thats being catered to and Drake's recent album prove just that. I hope this make sense
edit: i think the underground is going to be the new wave of music just 2016, its like sum kind of cycle that happens every decade
You're kinda not making sense here
I don’t even have to watch to video to know Pat boutta start SPITTIN
Typo of death
This whole video gave me so much to think about and it was above all, deep and beautiful
