      @nuredingeziqi679 Před rokem +23

      Honestly think this was the most considerate way to say it seeing how he knew Usopp would feel after losing that money. He just didn't want to make him feel responsible by making money an issue in the matter.
      The approach was solid and made sense, Usopp was just completely unwilling to budge. Either the ship would be repaired by someone or by him.
      He didn't even consider the fact that everyone would 100% die, it just didn't matter at that moment. There probably wasn't a good way for him to not escalate. Either they ( _they_ specifically, as a team effort) explained it directly like one would do with a child, but even then he would feel more responsible as he would blame the lack of money and I'm not sure the situation would be different at the end

    • @madelinemcmillan4020
      @madelinemcmillan4020 Před rokem +7

      nah this would have happened anyways regardless because usopps insecurities about his place in the crew , leaving the ship in any way form or manner would have been seen like luffy ditching him too no matter how gently he explained it.

  • @Iqnacio.
    @Iqnacio. Před rokem +135

    I think Oda went a step further here to showcase Luffys emotional intelligence, the reason for him to avoid telling Usopp about the Merry being irreparable isn't only cause he lost the money, but due to the fact that Usopp was the one who had been repairing the Merry up until that moment.
    Usopp was already feeling guilty for getting the money stolen from him, so much so that he was fully doubting himself as a capable fighter and therefore, as someone who could keep the pace of the crew without holding them back, and Luffy was fully aware of this (hence why he reprimended Nami for complaining about the money). So, Luffy knew that if on top of that insecurity Usopp had gotten the news about the Merry, he would've taken it as him not only being a "weak fighter" but a complete failure at his current role in the crew too as the de-facto shipwright, since from his perspective it would've been on him if the Merry had gotten to an irreparable point, thus he would have felt like he had failed his crewmates with this too.
    Of course, anyone in their right mind would know that it wasn't Usopps fault, yes, he was the de-facto shipwright and yes, he did a poor job repairing the Merry, but that's not his fault since he's not actually a shipwright, he just had to fulfill that role due to the crews circumstances at the time, but that's the point, Usopp wasn't in his right mind at the moment. So I think Luffy was being as thoughtful as possible and had nothing but good intentions, which is why I also think he can't be blamed for taking the position that he did.
    Having said that, I would still say he made a poor judgement on his approach cause Usopp isn't dumb either and he inmediatly realized that Luffy wasn't being fully honest and that created the perfect scenario for his doubts, and by extension his anger, to skyrocket and lash out which also took away any chance to explain everything to him in detail, this in return leads to Usopp taking the news in complete denial. At the same time, Luffy's not only being questioned as a captain, but he's also being attacked by a friend to whom he was trying to offer as much support as he could while everyone including him is grieving the Merry so he also feels completely entitled to be angry (this is also one of many cases in which Oda shows through Luffy how having emotional intelligence and having good communication skills are two very different things, something that even a lot of fans struggle to understand in Luffy).
    So in the end, Oda basically brew a completely realistic argument between close friends, both sides had nothing but good intentions that got clouded by misjudgements and a lack of communication till annoyance and eventually pure anger took over, plus maybe the most important part, it was completely avoidable.

      I’m jumping to Ussop’s defense here regarding the battle between him and Luffy. Luffy was being a reasonable captain but an unreasonable friend to Ussop. I mean he just woke up after getting beaten down, he is still hurting and recovering from his injuries which is bound to leave any man in a prickly mood, he is blaming himself for the loss of the money, and boom- Luffy says they’re abandoning the ship. Luffy and the rest have had time to process with the shipwrights’ analysis, Ussop just found out. And luffy is saying “we’re leaving merry behind” without giving him time to process. Emotions flare and Luffy blurts out “you leave the crew if you don’t like my decision.”
      The reaction from both of these characters feel so natural and justified from their pov.

      I think this is the part a lot of people don't get. Luffy KNOWS Usopp feels like the weak member of the crew, like useless baggage etc. He may be an idiot but he can read people like a book, he hears their voices you could say. He knows Usopp is feeling weak for being unable to take the Merry onwards, but without Usopp repairing things they'd never even have gotten close to that far. But he can't see that.

      I think the reason for Luffy's attitude here was that he was also in shock about Merry's irreparable condition. He was hurting inside. Merry was his nakama too, probably the first he ever let down/die (aside from... Sabo). He was not in the perfect condition, same with the entire crew, and most importantly Usopp. So things went sour. They had a very difficult predicament here, deciding to permanently leave a nakama (Merry).

    Usopp feels less than. So he identifies with the Ship. When you add the emotional connection he has with Merry....He feels abandonned. Like since luffy is leaving Merry behind(because she is useless), Luffy could one day leave him behind too(Usopp feels useless).
    Hence Usopp's overblowned reaction.
    Luffy is not a therapist so he can't grasp the nuance.
    I would probably have the same reaction than Usopp if I was in his shoes. Usopp needed to be reassured that he is not useless. And explanations about the Merry issue.
