    This game wasn't horror-tier terrifying in any sense of the imagination, but it was atmospheric and incredibly fun to play. I can certainly see why people would place this game at the top of their lists.

      +SilentTree The beginning of the game was legitimately tense and scary. The first time I played this game as a kid and tried to survive the village onslaught segment, I got pretty freaked out (given, I was a kid). I'm playing through the PC port now, and I was still a little bit jumpy when I heard the chainsaw rev up behind me again. Now that i'm older and a more skilled gamer though, the game's horror aspect is much less prominent, and it feels much more like an action game. I really love the B-Movie aesthetic, cheesy one-liners, and over the top action segments for what they are.

    • @nizz0matic307
      @nizz0matic307 Před 6 lety +5

      i don't know why people say this game isn't horror. having a horde of insane villagers try to cut you to pieces with farming tools, in a backwards european village, is pretty fucking scary.
      i mean, there are actual horror movies with that plot. the fact the enemies don't speak english and you are a foreigner makes it more terrifying. you are in a country you don't know well, in an isolated place that technology has left behind, and the insane hordes of psychotic murderers who have left bodies and skulls all over the place, are shouting words at you that you can't even understand. setting it in another place and having the enemies all speak another language was genius.
      then you get to the castle, and the horror vibe is the creepy cultists. hearing them chant weird lines in spanish over and over in the back ground is always creepy as fuck. the game is constantly unsettling.
      in certain parts the game totally loses the horror vibe, like the island with all the soldier ganados, and some other parts of the game are pure action with no horror. but then the game goes and does something like throw you in a creepy abandoned laboratory with the most terrifying monsters to ever exist, while you walk down hallways and hear their creepy breathing down the hall, and have to force yourself to walk down that hallway towards it. that one part is the most scary any resident evil game has ever been.
      most of the horror comes more from the tension of many psychopaths trying to circle you while you precisely aim, rather than jump scares or having to constantly run away from enemies due to have no ammo, like the first few games.
      but it's still fear, it's just a more frantic kind of fear.

      I agree. I appreciate his honesty. I have grown tired of the bandwagon critic and user reviews that praise this game like it was the holy grail of video games.
      I feel like Resident Evil 4 spawned this cesspool of Resident Evil games that followed. RE5 and 6 was, let's just say, poor attempts at a good Resident Evil game. Revelations was forgettable.

      Oh, I completely agree with you.
      I grew up on the old Resident Evil games, and RE: Code Veronica despite the tank controls and fixed camera, is still my favorite Resident Evil videogame.
      But, after the birth of Resident Evil 4, it helped bring about games like Dead Space. I just cannot go back to fixed camera and tank controls after that. I tried to play RE1 (remake) again, and I just could not do it.
      Even then, this does not change my opinion about the quality of the older Resident Evil games. They're still fantastic aside from those issues.
      And yeah, RE6 was pretty much bad news to the series.

    I think Resident Evil 4 killed the RE franchise in the same way that Aliens killed the Alien franchise. It added new elements that complemented the original, but those additions were misinterpreted and exaggerated by later additions to each respective series. After RE4, all survival horror games became action-oriented, but without that tongue-in-check element that you touched on here, and also lacking in the excitement that it brought. Likewise, after Aliens, every new addition to that series (aside from Alien 3, though I know how most people feel about that one) took the militarism and action and completely overblew it while missing the satire and political commentary.

      While yes, that is most likely the cause of Resident Evil's downfall, my point is that the direction that Resident Evil 4 took the series was one that was on the surface quite different to the previous games, but it still very much honours them. However, when it came time to continue the franchise, those in charge of the newer games tried to follow in RE4's footsteps by making the games more and more about action and westernising them, because they didn't truly understand the act they were following.
      Basically what I'm saying is that yes, you're correct in that the change in creative staff led to the franchise's diminishing quality, but the subtle complexity of the title they were following simply went over their heads, causing the franchise to derail in their attempts to elaborate on it. That's why Resident Evil 4 killed the series.

    I think the whole going from "Creepy unsettling village" to "Action and bombastic military camp" is an excellent example of game design. You start off with a weak pistol and you have really low health, giving you a sense of major helplessness. Everything is scary and creepy which makes things surviving that much more dramatic. However as you gain better weapons and perfect your skills on what to do to make the best out of your situations, it starts to feel more like youre dominating and feeling overpowered. You start weak, end strong, and the game evolves with you.

    @evolvedcockroach9046 Před 6 lety +12

    I think RE4 is a perfect example of brilliant pacing and level/enemy design. Though there are a lot of enemy encounters in the game, none of the encounters feel the same as they keep on building entirely new scenarios, there's always at least one twist, if not more than one or even a completely unique area or overhaul, to each other. And they know how to design interesting arenas and slowly introduce enemies and new variables as the game goes on. Building off what you know and the first time playing keeping you continually unsure of what to expect next.
    I think that's one of the big areas where RE4 really shines in and why it works, even though it's a game where you fight a ton of enemies, it's not like other games of the same breed as the encounters all have their own life and feel different from each other. Which is impressive, as RE4 is also longer than the usual game of its type. And this is backed with great atmosphere and satisfying gunplay (and of course, the encounters are actually fun and the design is on point) and fantastic replay value.

      Von Steiner You 'hated' it? Really? You're denying yourself one hell of a time. Not saying you should love it necessarily, but it's a well made game, and if you keep an open mind whilst playing, I don't see how you could in fact hate it.

      well if it's made by Mikami it doesn't have to be as goofy as RE4 gets sometimes. Besides, you were shown what you gonna get in previews. Did it not seem like a game which take itself seriously? I got exactly what I expected, even more. I would understand that people are dissapointed, because they didn't get 'the return of survival horror' as it was presented in trailers (I believe it was in trailers, I didn't see this kind of statement anywhere, so I wasn't expecting it to be true, I was expecting game directed by Mikami). I was waiting the game similar to RE4, but more complex and I got it. I didn't expect a good story, but I got that as well, so I'm happy. The only big problem is technical performance, I wish they chose Unreal Engine 3 instead. With this engine it's heavy on my computer and it takes a lot of space (something like 50gbs, maybe more) and I don't see how it's better visually than UE3. The rest is really good, can't wait for Evil Within 2

      I think it's because there is more cookie cutter design across game development as a whole. Now that companies know what sells versus what doesn't they are a lot less likely to take risks. Also the notion that they don't work as hard now or that they didn't have technical limitations back then is utter nonsense, it's corporate meddling that gets in the way, not the dev's ambition.

    Yes! The Regenerators and the Iron Maidens are some of the creepiest monsters ever made for a video game. Their design, way that they walk slowly towards you with death in their eyes, and that fucking noise that they make. It just combines into this creepy mishmash of nightmares. And you don't want to get close to those things. You just want to run, because you know it's dangerous. I've never heard of any other player or reviewer mention this creature.
    The only other monster than came close to the Regenerator was the Divider necromorph from Deadspace 1. That slow walk, and creepy design, along with the fact that trying to kill it only made things worse.

    Honestly I don't see RE5 and 6 taking themselves that much more serious than RE4 did. Also we have the REvelation series focussing on horror more and they seem to be taking themselves seriously... or not. I definately like the references. But fanservice is inevitable in these games at this point. I still like these newer games and I gladly replay them. But Resident Evil seems to try going back to the ruits. Next year we will get a Remaster PC port for RE0 and RE2 will be remade.

      Did we play the same game!? in Re4 you had this obvious camp going on with Leon being this wisecracking 80's action hero and the sheer self-aware hamminess the villains espouse is unparalleled!
      In RE5 chris is this generic military dude with deadpan serious acting same deal with sheva, so RE5&6 definitely feel way more serious which is actually more faithful to the Remake but the story is just batshit levels of stupid at this point so it might as well make fun of itself now.

      Leon has a sarcastic attitude because that is within his character. He is an agent and Ada is a spy. They both act like that. Chris is an soldier soldier. Of course he would be more serious. He has to. He is not Leon. That's like comparing Tony Stark to Steve Rogers. One character shruggs the desperate situation off like it's nothing special, while the other one takes it very seriously. Look at Jake in RE6. Does he take it seriously? Not at all. The first thing he worries about is the money. Ada is being Ada throughout the whole series. I'm pretty sure they will put in more sarcasm onto her character in the upcoming RE2 remake. Same with Leon. As for the villians, they are all different. Does Irving look like he is taking anything seriously? Are YOU supposed to take him seriously? Same with Excella. Krauser in RE4 was definately the serious kind of villian. He didn't have the same kind of attitude like Saddler or Salazar. You just have to look at what character you are talking about.

      RE2 leon was not an 80's action hero,he was just some rookie cop trying to survive.
      *"Look at Jake in RE6. Does he take it seriously? Not at all"*
      He has superpowers of course he won't take anything seriously! and in case you didn't notice leon in Re6 is back to being a serious character.
      *"I'm pretty sure they will put in more sarcasm onto her character in the upcoming RE2 remake"*
      That would be one unfaithful remake then cus she was a serious character in RE2 and it goes against the serious tone the game is going for.
      Too many jokes and it will end up sounding like the voice acting of RE1.
      *" Does Irving look like he is taking anything seriously?"*
      Wesker&irvling are all camp but what about the dead serious supporting cast? in RE4 Leon even jokes around with ada,hunnigan,ashley and even luis(but then again luis is always joking around too).
      *"Krauser in RE4 was definately the serious kind of villian"*
      Not really, considering the movie its paying homage to is a cheesy 80's action flick.

      *RE2 leon was not an 80's action hero,he was just some rookie cop trying to survive.*
      I know, but in Darkside Chronicles they altered his character a little and made him say some sarcastic remarks. I am pretty sure they will do that in the remake aswell.
      *He has superpowers of course he won't take anything seriously! and in case you didn't notice leon in Re6 is back to being a serious character.*
      What super powers? He is just genetically imune to every virus, but has no super human abilities. He's just a very skilled fighter.
      As for Leon, he was serious again because the situation he was in was more serious than before. He was framed for killing the PRESIDENT, who he knew personally and he actually DID kill the president. It was personal. And even then he wasn't going all serious the whole time. Leon to Jake: "Welcome to the club. You'll get used to it." or Leon to Simmons: "Back for more?"
      *That would be one unfaithful remake then cus she was a serious character in RE2 and it goes against the serious tone the game is going for.*
      She wasn't that serious. She was just playing for most of the time. She was already more like in RE4 when we saw her in REDC.
      *Too many jokes and it will end up sounding like the voice acting of RE1.*
      Some people apparently like the selfawareness and bad voice acting of the original. Also, RE2's voice acting is not gonna win any awards either. I also highly doubt they will go over the top with the jokes. Darkseid Chronicles had quite a lot of jokes and nobody was complaining.
      *Wesker&irvling are all camp but what about the dead serious supporting cast? in RE4 Leon even jokes around with ada,hunnigan,ashley and even luis(but then again luis is always joking around too).*
      That's Leon for ya. That's why people love him and consider him the best RE protagonist.
      *Not really, considering the movie its paying homage to is a cheesy 80's action flick.*
      Every fictional work is playing homage to something. Regardless, Krauser was much more serious than Saddler or Salazar. It's because he is that kind of character. He was the same in REDC too.

      I'm pretty sure they're going to make REmake 2 in the same vein as REmake not like that rail shooter, after all they are making it based on the recent sales of REmake.
      *"but has no super human abilities"*
      He has the same matrix fighting moves of wesker and he's supposed to be his son or something.
      *"because the situation he was in was more serious than before"*
      He was supposed to be rescuing president's daughter and fighting villagers in Re4 that was and not serious enough for him!? its obvious RE4 didn't want to be serious from the get go no matter what the premise.
      Revelations 2&RE4 are the only 2 games in the series that are fully self-aware with a deliberate sense of irony.

      @helvetica8625 Před 9 lety +20

      Yeah but to me the second half of RE4 was much better (than RE5) because of RE4s lighting and art style. RE5 looked so white washed and bright.

    • @OptiumusMagnum
      @OptiumusMagnum Před 9 lety +9

      High Velocity Velociraptor I dunno. I think the action-oriented second half of RE4 was actually ruined by its darker aesthetic. All that ambiance and isolated feel doesn't translate well to a second act wrought with choppers, mini-guns and explosions. It made more sense in the hostile and savage environment of RE5, not 4.

    • @OptiumusMagnum
      @OptiumusMagnum Před 8 lety +5

      ***** RE5 was a mindless, lead-filled action game, from start to finish. It didn't present itself as anything else; from the trailers, to the locales, to the tone and the gameplay scenarios it was an action games first.
      RE4 wrapped itself in the atmosphere of survival horror for the first 2-3 hours of the game, and then snowballs into action-oriented set-pieces and scenarios...with action first, horror second. It presented itself as one thing first, and then cartwheels into something else entirely halfway through.
      RE4 isn't a bad game, but neither is RE5...and NEITHER of them qualify as survival-horror. But at least RE5 didn't spend time trying to be anything it wasn't...it was consistent, at least.

      I don't get it. It added the open camera and introduced action elements while realizing the old zombie formula wasn't good enough and evolved the use of guns and enemies. Back then you either shot and knifed or ran past them, now you could shoot a leg and kick them all and more, giving a variety that was unseen in any other game by then

The end of resident evil was RE6. That was the real nail in the coffin. That game alone exemplifies the confused mess the series has become. Is that re4's fault? maybe. like the review says,re4 did pretty much check all the boxes and so it made it hard for anything that came after to do anything new but don't use that to try to shit on RE4. It simply is a classic.

      Putting your kind "gtfo" aside, I don't think RE4 was pernicious to gaming, it was pernicious to the RE series. I don't really mind, RE wasn't that good in the first place. What bothers me, is that RE4 is thought to be one of the very best games of all time. I just can't process that statement. RE4 killed the series but at the same time attracted a plethora of young gamers, just like the Halo series did.
      No I did not find RE5 scary, and I didn't find RE4 scary too. The thing is, like Benzaie said, considering the praise RE4 got, RE5 was the sequel fans ASKED FOR. RE5 was a true sequel to RE4 while RE4 was the true sequel of absolutely nothing.

    Till this day the Gamecube version is still the best for RE4, though I don't care that much for the game saddly :(. It's a badly controlling survivor horror game that wants to be an action game with a body count that sits up there with FPS games. The way it controls has to do with RE4s troubled development. It was supposed to be like the remake of RE1 for the GC, but then Capcom wanted more of an action feel out it. So you got the action game, but it still controls like a classic Alone in the Dark game. Which was good... for '92 when developers were still experimenting with an emerging genre, but tank controls in 2005 ?

      ripoutyourprejudice The 'tank controls' were intentional in the same way the delayed actions in the early Castlevania games were. They could've made the controls more fluid and responsive, which they did and renamed it Devil May Cry before starting on another RE4 from scratch.

    • @pkleee
      @pkleee Před 10 lety +3

      Keeping the tank controls was for the better. It wasn't just another throwback to how the older RE titles controlled. Horror games should be oppressive, making you feel like you were actually in danger. That you can't reload while running or strafe while aiming in RE4 disempowered you and made facing groups of enemies or agile monsters so much more intimidating. You could argue that it's artificial difficulty but I would much prefer that to the controls in RE6 or Dead Space 3, where controls for fluid movement degenerated survival horror into another COD-fest.

  • @WaddleDee105

    Gotta agree, RE4 is still an amazing game. You're also one of the first people I've seen say that the years 2004 and 2005 were some of the best years for games in a video.
    I have no proof but I imagine a bit of nostalgia is why so many cite the SNES and N64 years as gaming's best. They were good years for sure but the Gamecube era is when developers perfected 3D video games for most genres. It was the last generation of games before things got ridiculously generic and filled to the brim with publishers taking advantage of gamers in ever manner possible.
    I'd also add 2003 to that list for games like Wind Waker, Viewtiful Joe and Mario & Luigi/ Paper Mario 2. Also happy to see you put Splinter Cell Chaos Theory in your list of great games. Too bad the series took a nosedive with conviction and blacklist (and screw the critics that claimed Blacklist was a complex and rewarding stealth game. It was just a dull shooter with optional stealth tacked in that was embarrassingly simple).

  • @EnterTheGage
    @EnterTheGage Před 10 lety +2

    I just beat the game recently after having not played it in years since my early years in highschool (about to graduate college now) and I was surprised by how well it holds up, in fact there's plenty of elements of it that put modern shooters to utter shame. For one, you aren't drowning in ammo and money like say in Bioshock or Dead Space, you're ALWAYS low and if you ever think you aren't, the next section will kick your ass and have you depleted in no time, you have to scramble around the place all the time for that just to get by but if you do get to a point where you're at a wall, the merchant is around every corner and you can get a Rocket Launcher that 1-shots damn near everything except for Krauser and the final boss. The level design was expertly crafted as well (for the most part) with a couple points where you see a seemingly unreachable treasure but feel damn good when you do get it or when you're bombarded with enemies there's often various spots you can protect yourself at, most notably in the village at the start where there's several houses to hide in or you can climb the tower and sit up there but not for long since they will throw moltovs at you. The constantly changing enemies and areas made it so I never once got bored since you'd have to change up your tactics regularly because of this as well. Hell, I'm tempted to go through it again just for the sake of it, it really was an amusement ride........but I need a break first because of those wretched QTEs. At certain points they work well like when the right hand of Salazar is messing with you before you fight him or with the lake monster, but they are far too abundant than they rightfully need to be (they even happen in cutscenes!) and most of the time you will straight-up die if you get them wrong and it's especially irritating how a lot of them come out of nowhere like with the boulders making it more stress-inducing than clever.

  • @SergiMedina
    @SergiMedina Před 9 lety +8

    First of all, the remake of _Resident Evil_ didn't sell as expected because of that stupid Nintendo Gamecube/later Wii exclusivity (dumb consoles both, and previously RE belonged to PlayStation!). Although it's not perfect (as everything else made by humans), it's actually the best remake of a videogame I've ever seen.
    About RE4, I get insulted every time I say I didn't like it *at all*, and it was really a bad videogame even. Bad design in general, lame character development, dull story, extremely awful PC port, poor technical execution in general, ridiculous textures, utterly frustrating, repetitive, unnatural, counterproductive and useless quick time events (especially on PC)...
    Not only it isn't scary at all (well, it's more spooky than RE5 and RE6 for sure, but nothing to do with the first videogames...), but relies *heavily* on action. Mikami created it that way because of what happened to REmake, it seems. But when I play a horror game, I want it to be scary, *not action*!! For that there's like thousands of them already.
    I can understand some people may like it, and find it even enjoyable as I did in some very particular moments (playing better versions than the first PC port). But forme, RE4 isn't a good videogame by itself, but even if it was decent, it isn't a real _Resident Evil_ videogame. At all. RE5 at least is a good videogame, but it's just action, nothing to do with RE... RE6 is plain, stinking crap.
    RE4 was the first main videogame with the title _Resident Evil_ that wasn't actual survival horror, but action. And despite being so bad, it did well on the sales, and therefore we got RE5, RE6...
    Videogame industry is doing depressingly bad lately, but it's all consumer's fault. The majority don't seem to care about quality, or have even a decent taste. I think we should demand quality always, and don't buy anything just for the sake of it, if it's not what it should be, like *survival horror being horror and not action*...

  • @fwwaller
    @fwwaller Před 10 lety +20

    RE4 is SOOOO overrated. I do think it's a very good game, but I seriously just don't get the unanimous gushing that people give it. I found the game to actually be easy and not very scary. Now to be fair there were some pretty spooky moments and creepy as hell music, but it fails to be completely frightening since your character is a damn action hero. The enemies that are supposed to scary, like the big guys with the wolverine claws and the regenerators, are unsettling at first, but the moment you're able to find their weak spots, they're complete pushovers, did anyone seriously get scared of the regenerators once you were able to find the thermal scope? I sure wasn't, you could kill one of them in a matter of seconds! It sure doesn't help make the game scary that there's so much ammo lying around, yeah you can run out of it if you're too trigger happy, but once you master the art of knifing a guy, than shooting him, none of the human enemies pose a threat anymore. People who whine about the tank controls in the older games do not understand the fact that their characters are SPECIAL FORCES PEOPLE. It isn't like Silent Hill where the protagonist doesn't know how to fight, in Resident evil you control characters who are trained soldiers, the only way make the game intense and frightening is subvert the players visibility by making the camera fixed and forcing the player to manually adjust where the character is going, RE4's 'fixing' of this supposed 'problem' is one of the main things that sucks all the scares out of the game. It's impossible for me to take this game seriously as a horror game, and it is COMPLETELY hypocritical in my opinion for bitching about RE5 not being scary and a total action fest when RE4 had done that long before.

      By overrated, what ratings are you comparing to? RE4 may not look as great today, but in its time it was revolutionary. Polished gameplay, redefining the survival horror genre, QTE's, overall quality and meticulous design, gorgeous character models and graphics, the list goes on.

    • @fwwaller
      @fwwaller Před 10 lety +1

      I don't care about the graphics, yes it's a very good game, one of the best action titles of the 6th generation, but one of the best games ever?? No. I'm comparing it to the insane amount of accolades that every gamer and his mother seem to award it, it's not that great. Since you arbitrarily mention the graphics, yes the effects and character models might look nice, but the environments are constant barrages of browns and grays, they are very unappealing to look at. RE4 was meant as an action game, but RE5, which played exactly the same, is somehow worse? Sorry, that doesn't compute, and don't try to bring up the argument with Sheva either, Ashley was FAR more annoying than Sheva, the amount of time you spend playing with Ashley is almost the entire length of RE5 itself. Story wise, RE4 was so retarded, nothing about it made sense, and on top of it all, it had almost NOTHING to do with resident evil, whether Resident Evil had a good story or not is entirely opinion based, but it's story was vast with lots of characters, RE4 was a side story that only affected future games in ONE plot related aspect, everything else, Krauser, the illuminados, unrelated to resident evil, if you take out Leon and Ada, it isn't a resident evil story.

    • @pkleee
      @pkleee Před 10 lety +17

      fwwaller While RE4 is more action-oriented, I don't believe it was designed to be an action game. Shinji Mikami scrapped a prototype of RE4 saying that it was too action-oriented (the prototype later became Devil May Cry).
      While RE5 plays similarly to RE4, the design choices are what makes RE4 regarded as the better game. Ironically the dull-colored landscape that you cited as criticism for RE4 is what I think a component of one of RE4's strengths: atmosphere. The grimy colors accompanied by eerie music, angry waves of zombified enemies, and the revving of chainsaws feels far more oppressive and horror-like than the bright, sunny environment of RE5 ever will.
      Escort missions tarnish many great games, but RE4 handles it well by having Ashley conveniently kidnapped multiple times so you can have some time to be alone and give your senses a rest from her incessant nagging. That's what I call great pacing.
      Sheva is more useful than Ashley, but having an AI to fight with you takes away any fear or dread. Horror games should be oppressive, making you feel as if you were in danger. Ashley's vulnerability underscored the survival aspect of RE4; Sheva does the opposite in RE5.
      RE4's story is laughable at best, but story and writing was never a real concern for this series. BTW could you explain what you mean by "resident evil story?"

    • @fwwaller

      Correction: The prototype of RE4 that became Devil May Cry, while Shinji Mikami DID say one of the reasons for it being ditched was because of the heavy emphasis on action, his mean reason was that it had NOTHING to do with Resident Evil, a dude with a sword and guns fighting demons and supernatural monsters does not equal resident evil, a purely science fiction centered universe.
      A game CAN be frightening WHILE being interesting to look at as well, take the original PS1 resident evil games, the Remake and RE 0, those games had gorgeous pre rendered backgrounds brimming with cool art design that added a spooky unique flavor to each environment, Resident Evil 4 has 3 main visual themes, grimy ass poop brown covered medieval village, dimly lit medieval castle that is the most visually interesting setting in the game, but THEN it goes back to the griminess with the military base at the end, overwhelming you ONCE AGAIN with browns and grays, it's boring and ugly to look at and contrasts badly with the high quality character models and animations, at least in something like Silent Hill 2 and 3 the environments are detailed enough to excuse the muted sepia tone colors, RE4's grimy locations have many pixelated areas made all more noticeable by the dull color palette. Only about 20% of RE5 was is sunny locations, everywhere else was actually pretty varied, underground cave ruins, giant shipyards, underground laboratories, RE5 actually had some pretty sweet locations.
      I'll admit that it is refreshing to not have to deal with Ashely's BS NEARLY as much as you could have, but I feel that the game was WAY too long, by about halfway through the military base part of the game, I felt the game FAR outstayed it's welcome, I love long games, but some parts in the 3rd act of RE4 just felt like the game was overloading you with filler, again, more noticeable due to the boring settings.
      Here's the problem, I NEVER FELT LIKE I WAS IN DANGER IN RE4. Yeah Leon is SO vulnerable that he performs matrix like stunts off of walls to avoid lasers, is able to shoot a flying axe out of the sky, is equipped with every single gun known to mankind, and can throw down with a dude who is like 4 times more muscular than he is, EVEN WHEN THAT DUDE IS GIVEN SUPERHUMAN STRENGTH AND SPEED BY THE PARASITE. RE4 is not scary, it never was, never will be, it may try to scare you, all the enemies may look intimidating, but they won't look that way when you plow through them all with you're SMGs, hand cannons, and tommy guns.
      I thought that last part was self explanatory, it's pretty simple, a resident evil story, one that continues the arcs of some of the established characters,(Chris, Leon, Claire, Barry,) and progresses the story, showing what happens in the aftermath of Umbrella's fall. The game wasn't about that, it was just about some imperious religious group in Europe that's unearthed a prehistoric parasite that they want to use to rule the world, the only connection we're given to Umbrella is Ada, there's a cutscene where Leon says she's working with Wesker, but then, IT'S NEVER BROUGHT UP AGAIN. Yeah the separate ways campaign reintroduces Wesker and does a better job at connecting the plot of RE4 with the overall plot of the franchise, but that's a SIDESTORY, not part of the actual main course. RE5 was a true sequel, following up on the stories of established characters and giving some resolution to the story lines of previous games. THAT'S what I mean by resident evil story.
