Thank you for posting this! I've been meaning to strip our diapers. We already have been using them for the past year and a half and are expecting another this summer. It was time! This will help tremendously.
Wow, this would have been so helpful about 6-7 years ago when our Kooshies were so smelly. They had already been used by my two other kids, so I figured they were beyond repair. But this stripping method probably would have done the trick, as they were in pretty good shape otherwise. I also would have loved those pocket diapers with the snaps! Kooshies were all the rage at the time, but had velcro which sometimes ruined the diapers in the wash if not fastened properly in the machine. I love that green diapering is still advancing - thanks for helping spread the word. :)
Megan F I know! It's amazing how far they've come just in the 4 years since we started CDing. I'll be doing a video some time about snaps vs velcro, but (spoiler alert), I definitely prefer snaps…. except in the middle of the night in the dark LOL!
Tried to follow along the best I could! I soaked my diapers in the tub with Oxiclean then did a rinse cycle. Soaked them in bleach for 30 mins, rinsed and moved them back to the washer. They are now washing on warm water, high spin, heavy water. Hope these come out well!
The only thing that may draw me from doing this is having to individually rinse each diaper in the bathtub! : ( Is there a reason why we shouldn't just simply soak/ rinse these directly in our washing machine? Thanks for the great video/ info!
Hi I'm wondering if you could help me out here... I need to desperately strip my diapers and plan to do the routine you mention in the tub with washing soda, borax and calgon... BUT Walmart and superstore where I live including my local grocery store doesn't sell Calgon the water softner. Any tips on alternative brands I could look for?? In my laundry aisles in each store none sold any kind of water softners for your laundry.
I don't have an answer for you there. I would strongly encourage you to join the Fluff Love & CD Science group on FB because I'm sure someone could help you there! Sorry!
I haven't used any of my diapers yet, I'm pregnant at the moment, but want to get them prepped. My stash is a mix of new and used. Should I wash them before stripping or just go straight to stripping? Thanks!!
you only want to strip clean diapers, so yes, go ahead and wash them first. I wouldn't bother stripping the new diapers, but yes, it may be a good idea to strip the used ones. Hope that helps!
I followed these steps exactly as described, but still have stink issues!! I am so annoyed, any advice? I am guessing I have hard water because soap doesn't lather well. Wish this worked for me 😩
oh no!! what kind of diapers are you using? is it mostly in your inserts? I've done a really hard strip with a giant pot of boiling water, about 1/4 cup of washing soda and a sprinkling (sorry, that's nto very technical) and let them soak for about 15 minutes. Use some tongs to agitate them and you'll be surprised what lovely colors your water will turn. Blech. When in doubt, have them sit in the sun for a day or two to see if that helps and add vinegar to the rinse cycle. I hope you find something that works for you!
RealHousewifeRachel Thanks so much!! I will give that a try! I use the BumGenius Freetime diapers. Don't know why I didn't think of SUN! I line dry (always inside), no dryer, so hoping that does the trick in addition to boiling + vinegar in the rinse cycle. Thanks for your response!
ah, yes, Freetimes. Here's the thing about the all-in-ones with the sewn-in insert: you can separate the insert from the shell and clean it individually. You can use all kinds of heat levels with the inserts and it won't damage them, but if you get the PUL on the covers too hot in the washer or dryer, it can delaminate it or cause problems with the elastics.
We moved and the last time I used my diapers I am pretty sure the machine I was using had hard water and laundry softener build up in them. I now have a a water softener that is professionally installed. Do I need to use the Calgon?
@@healingkatlyn99 hi there! Follow this tutorial for stripping diapers, it should definitely help! We had hard water when I filmed this. Also, you can get a lot of info on www.fluffloveuniversity.com
Did you know that baking soda is hard water softener and detergent booster? You're buying two different expensive detergents instead of one valid cheap and natural one. Oh,it's antibacterial too!
RealHousewifeRachel You have a tub full of water! 30-40 gallons! Keep in mind that cleaning effectiveness depends on time, temperature, agitation, and concentration of cleaning agents. That’s just how chemistry works. You have time and possibly temperature on your side, but not agitation or concentration. What you’re doing doesn’t hurt anything because you’re dissolving and rehydrating some of the contaminants, and rinsing them away, making laundering easier, but it’s not helping much more than soaking in plain water. Implication: use much less water to increase the concentration. Also use hot water.

Thank you for breaking this down so simply! I'm about to do my first strip and have been nervous.
Thank you so much for sharing this method!!! It worked. I recommend to all mama's to soak the diapers over night for the first part.... Works wonders
My 18 month old was giggling and playing with your son LOL. She loved how he kept popping in 🤣

how did it turn out?
Thanks for the info! Love the kiddie photo bombs 😂😄👍🏼
You’re welcome! They are 8 and 6 now 😭😭😭
Hello how often we have to do that ?
how much of liquid calgon would you use for this? I didn't find the powder at the store but snagged the liquid.
I honestly don't know.
The only thing that may draw me from doing this is having to individually rinse each diaper in the bathtub! : ( Is there a reason why we shouldn't just simply soak/ rinse these directly in our washing machine? Thanks for the great video/ info!
+Zeitgeist TTD I think you could, but I felt like I was being more thorough by rinsing them by hand before they went into the washer.
The last step when you wash in the washing machine 2-4 times do you add any borax or calgon to the wash?
no, add nothing
Isn't Borax & the Arm &Hammer the same thing?
nope, Borax is Borax, and Arm & Hammer is Washing Soda. Two different chemicals!

Will lemon sent bleach work?
Probably, in a pinch, but regular, no-frills, chlorine bleach is what's recommended by Fluff Love & CD Science admins.
What detergent did you switch to and how much of it do you use?
I switched to powdered Persil and maybe used a quarter cup, maybe a bit less.
I haven't used any of my diapers yet, I'm pregnant at the moment, but want to get them prepped. My stash is a mix of new and used. Should I wash them before stripping or just go straight to stripping? Thanks!!

Did you happen to soak them overnight ? I noticed you said it was the next day . .
I sure did! It was about 7-8 hours, if I remember.
Awesome ! Just started my process about 1 hour ago & was just wondering :) thanks
We don't have calgon in Canada!!! :( Is there something else we could use in place of the Calgon!?!?!
you really only need this if you have hard water. If you still need it, honestly I'm not sure of an alternative off the top of my head. Sorry!
@@mrscouts07 Thank you!! I'm guna do some diggin!
@@syleenadawn2038 did you find an alternative?
Another tip is to hang out your cloth diapers on the line and the sun naturally bleachs them! 😊
Can I do this in a bucket? Only need to treat 2 diapers...
yes!
So what is your wash routine now?
Don't have one! We've been finished with cloth for a few years now, as my youngest is 7 years old.

Can I put pocket into the strip?
yes!
Can you use liquid Calgon?
I'm honestly not sure!
Does this work for totsbots AIOs?
yes
Does stripping help with absorbency issues?
it can, yes. A lot of times, you can have hard water or other minerals built up on the diapers, which can cause repelling.

no, powder is best. I can't remember why (it's been quite a while since I filmed this) but the liquid isn't good for this.

Ugh! 3 tbsp of each? Really? Lady, do you realize how dilute this solution is? You may as well have used plain water! This is ridiculous!
