Do Catholics Still Do Indulgences? (feat. Fr. Gregory Pine, O.P.)

- Have you ever heard of an indulgence? If you learned about them in history classes, you may have heard the controversy surrounding them. It’s true that indulgences have a rocky history, but the question we’re left with is: what about indulgences today?
Today, Fr. Mark-Mary and Fr. Gregory Pine explain what indulgences are, how they work, and whether or not they have a place in the Church of the 21st century.

“He’s good with words.”
“Yes, we put them in sentences”.
I used to be hesitant about indulgences, I didn't get the deal with indulgences and also the history of selling them makes me uncomfortable praying for an indulgence. I now get the point of indulgences that it's not a shortcut to heaven but it's an act of mercy for every one of us on our road to sainthood, so thank you Fr Mark-Mary and Fr Gregory so explaining indulgences so well. P.S. I love the jokes between the different orders!
Seems this was funnier than it was meant to be.
I agree! I laughed so hard at the thought of meeting God in a dark alley- "did you say to pray this?"🤣🤣🤣
Offer up our sufferings for atonement for sins
Loved his Accent, "" so, you got the indulgences?" 😎
Two of my favorite priests!
Thank you so much dear Fathers! I didn't know/remember the indulgence obtained reading holy Scripture for 30 minutes... really interesting! God Bless you, the information provided by this video is so precious! God bless you!
Matthew 23:9-And do not call anyone on earth 'father,' for you have one Father, and he is in heaven.
@Jarred Matthew 23:9 states otherwise
@Jarred let the word of God be the truth and every man a liar
@Jarred please explain Matthew 23:9 to me if I have it wrong
@@Makavelii-yf3sg I'll explain it to you because I believe you have it wrong. It's saying do not have false idols. There is only 1 God, only 1 true heavenly father, no doubt about it and that's what it's about. We still have biological fathers, founding fathers, "Father Abraham" and priests as in men who help guide us.
If you have a biological father, he is supposed to raise and teach his children along with the mother, yes? Founding fathers and priests do the same. Of course we do not attribute the creation of mankind and the being our Lord and Savior to these men. This is what I believe is true, but im not perfect and I could be wrong.
Btw Makavelii is an interesting name 😉
God bless both of you. Catholic wisdom and comedy in the same 10 minutes - Made my day.

Oh really? U couldn't see his thumbs in this video.🤔
I love the two of you!!! 🙏🙏 and I say that with all do respect!! You can teach with joy! How great! God Bless You Both!
Please do a stations of the cross video please (just like you did Divine Mercy and Sacred Heart)
How do we know if we have become detached from sin? Especially if you're like me and are often repeating a couple of sins regularly because of weakness, lack of prayer life, or whatever.
Well if you’re repeating sins you haven’t completely detached to
sin. If you’re behavior mimics the Saints pretty good chance you’ve really detached from sin
In another video father pine fed fat the sacrament of confession perfects our contrition come I don't know if this is different or similar to detachment from sin but it gave me great consolation.
You don't. Only God knows your heart. And that's okay. :)
Amazing. Loving all these wisdom and explanation from our dear priests. I'm keeping you in my prayers tonight🙏

I like the fact that this was posted as we're learning about the Prot Defor- "Reformation" in school... clears up some misconceptions, thanks! 👌👌
They use words. LOOOOOL so so soooo good!
simony is bad, but giving back to correct an offense after confession, is fully acceptable to the Lord, and also humbling, which humanity needs more of, esp among the rich
Wow! Just Wow! Father Pine how do you do it? Saw you on Godsplaining earlier and now again. Thank you Lord for Father Pine (and the Franciscans also).
There's nothing more intimidating than to have Father Mark staring at you while you're explaning. Hahahhaha I don't know if it was just me, though. But on a serious mode, this video is very informative!

Good Words from an Ordered Well-Formed Educated in Study Man.
First time to learn the word "indulgence" in the concept of "gift" overflowing from God's infinite generosity, towards which we must step forward and receive with open hearts.
Very enlightening, and very funny! Thanks for the laughs, Fathers!🤣🤣🤣
As a convert I've always had a vague idea that indulgences were a shady way of bargaining with God and of course that's just not on. Thank you for your video which has made the concept clearer and more acceptable to my mind. God bless and protect you both always.
What about the concept that penance and indulgences are not so much about what we did to God as this was 100% dealt with at the cross, but rather it is about being reconciled with those whom we injure? This can be resolved through the offended party offering forgiveness of the heart or temporal justice being meeted out by God on Earth or through Purgatory. This is why we are to do good works and to pray for those going through Purgatory so the damage done by ourselves and others can be healed, reconciled, and forgiven.
Fr. Gregory is hilarious 😁
padre pine is why i watch youtube
Thank you for breaking it down fathers!
wow I needed this clarity on this topic. Amazing!
I thought when Jesus was beaten and died on a cross he took the punishment for us? I’m confused. I assume as long as I repent and believe upon him I shall be saved.
you don't think you can lose your salvation? disqualify yourself by rejecting God?
Read the kjb
He did. But, as recorded in the kjb, He also said things like "not everyone who cries out 'Lord, Lord!' will be saved" and "if you love me, keep my commands." And Paul exhorts us to "finish the race" and "work out your salvation with fear and trembling."
So, two thoughts:
1) we don't lose our Free Will when we get saved.
2) Salvation is a gift. We can return it, neglect it, abuse it, etc., just like any physical gift we receive.
Read scripture as a whole. God is Merciful AND Just.
It seems when converted to Catholicism...there is a lot of work to be done ...❤️🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾 Thank you
Oh so helpful! Thank you 🙏🏻. You both are doing great things!
It’s in the CCC
Fathers this video is hilarious. I just watched Fr Mark Mary's video with Austin Suugs of Gospel Simplicity. I was a great video and I'm very impressed. So was Fr Gregory's video on that channel too. Won't you two Fathers please invite Austin to this channel. I've never seen the funny side of him, ever, watching almost all his videos for almost a year now. He said it to me it would be fun to be on your channel.
I’m trying so hard to understand , be patient and learn about all the Catholic teachings and it’s so hard. I just want a chapter and a verse . Please. Why don’t these guys, Fr. Mike or any of these men ever quote scripture. 😭😭😭🥺
Thank you! Awesome!!
Thank you, fras. Thank you for always encouraging us. Is Fr Greg Pine back?
I can't decide what distracted me more... stuffed animals or the Godfather impression? HaHaHa
In all seriousness, this was GREAT. There is so much confusion about indulgences, and it's great to hear them explained with such simplicity and clarity. One of your best yet!!
So, I understand we can obtain indulgences either for ourselves or for those who have died. What about others who are still living? Since we can't obtain indulgences for them, what is the best way to pray for others? Is there anything we can do that might be similar to an indulgence?
I don't know if you can help someone else with their penance (most penances I've received are super easy anyway), but you can pray for them. 1 John 5:16-17 is relevant. St. Monica comes to mind. It's a good question. I wish he had covered it. :)
Absolutely, you just pray for them. Luke 5:17-20. The paralytic was healed because of the faith of those who brought him. Novena or prayers to St. Monica. Or just dedicate your Masses, rosaries, or prayers to their conversion.
Yes
Thanks as always. Will quote this class in yet another class.
Thankyou. I learned something new today.
I learnt more about indulgence through America needs Fatima and try to do them often.
I think you guys blazed over the part which is actually hardest for me. How is is just that I can obtain an indilgence on behalf of another?
Its good to know that Jesus paid it all and took all the sin debt i dont have to pay anything ❤
You explained it well...
Now I am more confused than ever and I still cannot except the reality of purgatory.
How can we pray for someone who has died when we don’t know where they are? We don’t know if they are in heaven or hell let alone purgatory? I don’t see how purgatory goes along with any kind of scripture and I’m no expert but there’s plenty in the Bible that says Jesus paid the price, the whole price for our sins.
I believe purgatory is found in the Catholic Bible ( Book Of Macabees); which is Old Testament. + or - 150 bc.
For an Old Testament believer , purgatory would apply, I suppose.... a.k.a. "Abraham's Bosom".
After Christ went to the cross; there is no need for purgatory. If a person can get to heaven via having someone alive praying for a dead human; then Christ suffered and died in vain. I pray to FATHER,SON, and HOLY SPIRIT.
Great video. Very informative. Thank you!
"We use words. We put them in sentences."😆
I had to look up the word plenary. I've tended to hear it with the word indulgence. But I hear "plenary meeting" or so, which means "mandatory," more or less. You're talking to fellow believers, but I suggest you bring it down to a 3rd-grade level. Or younger. You made sense to me, and I'm not worried about history in this way. I'm not Catholic, but even Catholics who go to confession or pray for particular things might wonder both about the nature of indulgence and the possible abuse of the thing. The answer could be "Indulgence for Dummies." For this format, try again. Be Mr. Rogers. And be honest if things ever got out of hand. We all go overboard on this ship. You both speak very well and have charisma. (I had to look up how to spell charisma just like I did the meaning of plenary.) But it's true. You're great!
Which religions don't think people are amazing?
There is actually a book (out of print now but amazing) called A Modern Guide to Indulgences by Edward Peters ( a cannon lawyer)
Fun conversation, hehe.
I have a question. I spend 30 minutes daily reading the daily readings and reflecting on them. I also do the rosary daily, but by myself. Must I do the rosary with someone else daily to work on a plenary indulgence?
In order for the indulgence to be a plenary indulgence it has to be "in a church or oratory, in a family gathering, within a religious community or recognized association of he faithful, or in any other context in which the faithful have come together for an upright purpose."
My Church has 2 week-day Masses. Some of us stay behind afterwards and pray the Rosary together. You could introduce this practice if it's not already being done?
Very well said
This is why Martin Luther got mad, and I cannot blame him. Hate the sin, not the sinner.
Huh
Indulgences are not a way of hating the sinner.
Martin Luther got mad because of the Monk who abused the practice and extorted money from people making them think they had to pay money for their loved ones to make it to heaven. Unfortunately he threw the baby out with the bathwater and didn't stop at the actual abuse. He ditched 7 books of the bible that had been accepted for 1500 years without question since the 4th century when the Bible was compiled. Then he and a nun ditched their vows they took before God and got married. He's a heretic.
"You with your human traditions nullify the word of God" - Mark 7:13
Bought some st Benedict medals on Amazon. Wanted to get them blessed but don't feel right just handing a bag to a priest without something like a donation for his time.
It takes less than a minute. Just bring it to him before or after Mass.
So in order to get an indulgence I have to recive the Eucharist that day, have gotten confession within 8 days, prayed for the Popes intensions, and be detached from all sin including venial sins and then and only then do some good work, will "reward" me an indulgence?
Oh look, my favourite vowed religious!
Would someone have to state, to the Lord, Im offering this act today for a soul? What if someone does all that anyway, would an indulgence have been granted unbeknownst to the person praying, for a soul in purgatory? Also, do you chose which soul you ask this pardon, or do we offer it to whoever the Lord choses? Sometimes I have asked for Mary to use my offering for wherever she likes.
@J H thank you !
A condition is that you have to state that you are doing this act for the sake of an indulgence and you can be specific or leave it to God to use as is best. You can also make a statement from time to time such as, "God, I wish to gain every indulgence you ever offer me." and make it a habit to go to confession every 2 weeks and say a couple daily prayers for the intentions of the Pope and you'll be set on those details.
Amen!
Oh man time to empty out purgatory lol
If I do all of these "indulgent acts", for my mother, how can I be sure that he gets the credit and not one of the billions of souls in purgatory? Exactly who keeps a record of this?
What a Pine thumbnail!... I mean: fine!
I am trying to remember all this..... And the whacky stuff..... But I think I need a PDF..... Please? 😌
Who determines you really did 30 min prayer ?
With 30 min Im totally saved ? That’s crazy .
And how beautiful it is portrait to hide everything that happened in that time
You and your watch and clock. You're requesting an indulgence from God, pretty sure he'll know. And, no, not 30 mins and you're totally saved. You also have to meet the other requirements they mentioned; confess your sins, receive the Eucharist in the state of grace, pray for the intentions of the Pope.
👍👍Amen!!🙏🙏
Amen 🙏
I basically understand how it works, but my question would be how do you ensure that people are truly repentant in their acts? When you put a name to the action it just seems that so many people would just do the act to mark a box and think it’s fine. I know for myself that I wouldn’t just do an act to get a reward, but wouldn’t so many people in the church acquire a dysfunctional relationship to the gospel i.e. thinking their works are what’s saving them and not Christ? I’m an evangelical Protestant thinking and praying about converting to the CC but indulgences are one of the things that I have a hard time understanding let alone having to explain to family or friends who would bring it up as a reason for hesitancy. I would greatly appreciate any genuine answers!
I'm a cradle Catholic and had this same concern. But many saints have said even a rosary poorly said has great merit. So I struck out and started dutifully checking the boxes. But God works thought that imperfect prayer to bring the devotion you need. Now I can't even begin to tell you how my prayer life and devotion has grown in this practice.
Ive just started RCIA to convert. I am having a hard time with Purgatory and Indulgences. Is any of this in the Bible or how did this belief start?
Ask your director of RCIA for these questions (which by now I assume you already have).
I just wanna play monopoly with you guys.
So if you do plenary indulgence and you want to use it on yourself, is it kind of like a banking system? Who keeps track of how many indulgences you save for yourself?
Think of it as fixing windows you've broken. You've repented and been forgiven, now you need to make things right through your good intentions and actions. Whether you tape together the broken pieces or acquired new glass, it is the widow's owner (God) who makes the call of acceptability. Do your sincere best, trust God, don't worry. All will be well.
It's between you and our merciful God. Do the Divine Mercy Sunday indulgence.

Hello,
Anyone knows how to prepare oneself to receive the Eucharist?
Examination of conscience.
Repent for any un-love you have thought or done.
Hit the confessional for the mortal sins.
Fast for an hour before receiving Him.
Listen and reflect on God's Word.
Praise the Lord for His incredible Love and Mercy.
Be humble and grateful.
You're ready.

I have something to share here and just needed some opinions. I may be committing a sin just by discussing this as it was during my confession but Im just confused. I go for confession weekly and sometimes twice a week as I have a problem with lust and porn and understand I cannot receive holy communion in a state of mortal sin..I also tend to bring the same sins over and over again each time..especially my problems with sexual impurity. Today father said ' I think you are incapable of change and I don't believe you can or want to change..you are abusing this sacrament of confession coming here every week with the same sins over and over again..you are wasting my time, God's time and your time..'
I want to take this as constructive and know that this is the voice of God telling me to get my act together and wake up but I felt very disheartened and discouraged. I understand I truly need to work on being repentant for my sins but I fall to temptation so easily. Just wanted some thoughts as to what I should do. God bless you for taking the time to read this.
Jesus died for ALL my sins. Thats why I can be the blessed man in Romans 4:8. If you believe in Purgatory then you believe Jesus didnt suffer for the punishment of all your sins, (because of the temporal punishment from venial sins). This is an effectual denial of the sufficiency of Christ's sacrifice.
Can you say you have the peace from God described in Romans 5:1 if you are continually losing salvation through mortal sins? Even skipping one mass is a mortal sin. This is not the free gospel of Jesus Christ through grace alone through faith alone. I want you who is reading this to recognize the peace that comes from Jesus and the love that he has for you. He died once and for all for you, so that by believing with faith you can have eternal life
Please read Romans 4 and 5 and pray on it

Loving perfectly (as our heavenly Father does) is what we'll be doing for eternity in Heaven (because of His Son's Precious Blood).

An Augustinian friar: *KALM*
My goodness. Do you not see how this is saying that what Christ did was not enough? Christ plus anything is not the gospel. If anybody needed to do anything or give anything then what was the point of Christ dying on the cross? There is so much "Church" "tradition"That is being practiced here that is not found in Scripture.
How can you reconcile we are of good courage, I say, and prefer rather to be absent from the body and to be at home with the Lord. (2 Corinthians 5:8) and say that there is a purgatory? Absent from the body present with the Lord It's clear as day. Any type of works-based religion is false. That's not to say that we won't perform works but those are mere products of faith. Faith without works is dead as you are probably all familiar with. What that's talking about is "profession" and not "possession". The "works" would be what is known as the "fruit". If someone were to claim that they are a believer and yet continued to live the same way that is the proof that there's been no change no possession of the Holy Spirit. That's not to say that we don't sin once we are saved But there's a change. I would love to discuss this stuff with these guys or anybody on here. We can be respectful and we can use scripture to discuss this stuff rather than opinion.
It seems so much easier to go to hell.
