I’m having an anxiety attack watching this. That bear looks serious. I really hope this guy has some bear spray because he’s about to need it!!! Rangers should consider passing out tranquilizer guns to tourists in case of this. If this guy turns and runs, he’s a dead man.
Tranq guns don't save people's lives. They anger the animal and for about 15-20 mins it goes on an angry rampage till it falls. That would get him killed.
I personally think that if someone was going to carry a tranquilizer gun, then the park should not be accessible to humans. This park belongs to the bears and the humans that visit need to except the fact that it’s pretty much run by the bears. Just step off to the side of the trail and let the bear pass. That’s what they teach you in bear school at Brooks Camp. 🐻
That big bear has swagger. When bears walk with that type of confidence they know they are the top apex predator and could kill you and eat you. That bear might have just had a huge meal. If not, it would have killed you and ate you. Very scary!
Right...I saw a drone video of one running and that's what makes them so scary! What can you possibly do? Can't outrun, can't outclimb, can't OUTSWIM! you literally can't do anything aside from use a weapon and you better know what you're doing. So scary 😱😱

Everyone who arrives at brooks falls in Katmai has to attend a Ranger orientation, and they tell you clearly: get off the path if a bear is coming, just go to the left or the right and retreat. If this guy had done so he wouldn’t have had to have been rescued by a ranger. The Bears are really in their own world. It’s very likely the bear didn’t even know he was there. At Brooks. They are totally habituated to humans. I had a bear follow me off the trail with three other people. When we shouted at him he was startled and ran. He was so engrossed in looking for food that he didn’t see hear or smell us.

Okay let's start right off the bat by saying what this person is doing wrong. They are moving backwards away from the bear. They need to stand in place and move off the trail and let the bear pass because it will, it is not interested in the person, but if the person looks like they're running away that will trigger a predatory response.
Why do you get in these situations? It scares the bear, one day, something really bad is going to happen and that bear is going to pay for it. Humans are not meant to engage with grizzlies. The grizzly will eventually attack and when he does, they will put him down. Please be careful.
