  • In Europe, food manufacturers have signed up to ‘responsibility pledges’, promising no added sugar, preservatives, artificial colours or flavours and not to target children. So why are they using tactics banned in the West in the developing world? There, they have created ultra-low-cost products with higher levels of salt, sugar and saturated fats. Filmed in Brazil, India and France, we investigate the new tactics of brands like Coca-Cola, McDonald’s and Domino’s Pizza.

Not everybody takes care of their kids because they are addicted to taking care of their kids. Not everybody votes during elections because they are addicted to voting. Sometimes, our motivation is beyond the need for it. Sometimes, we just want it, but not need it. Sometimes, we need it, but not want it.

I worked in France, as a ballerina for years. So as an adult I wasn't exposed to these marketing schemes. It has to start with public knowledge of what this really is, salt, fat and sugar all leading to obesity, heart disease and diabetes type 2, psycological dependence and so many other health related problems. What more countries need to do as France did, legislation to ban junk food, which is not food at all. My father is a cardiologist and ICU turnover rates are ever increasing. Knowledge and making proper decisions about what you put in your body is paramount to your health. Targeting children with these food apps is criminal in my opinion. These corporations as we have seen will do anything to push their chemically dangerous products. Thank you for this very informative documentary.

Well, there is more to it than that... In South Asian countries, restaurant sanitation can be a problem. Street food and mom-and-pop restaurants may use real, better quality local ingredients, but getting sick from pathogens in restaurant food is still pretty common. Corporatized fast food doesn't have that problem due to the robust Western sanitary practices. That said, it's a tradeoff: short-term suffering but less long-term detriment with local street food or short-term pleasure and chronic suffering from fast food. Most people instinctively avoid anything that causes acute, immediate risk. So the chronic hypertension, diabetes, etc from corporatized fast food is more-or-less ignored...

I love the fact that their culturally traditional dishes have such a wide array of spices and veggies and are simple yet complex in flavor, along with the fact that cooking has seemed SO family oriented. I HATE that these fast food giants have swept in, possibly under the guise of creating jobs for their people and their economy, and have created OBESITY in a place such as India, the creators of Ayuverda, which is a beautiful health and wellness practice, and in Brazil where the people are known globally to be visually stunning, vibrant, and fit, and creating a 1:2 ratio of obese adults!. Evil. Just evil. And I'm angry and astonished.

If you were on the bigger size you would have to look for a seamstress or a taylor to make your clothes. There was a Jack In The Box which was far from where I lived and sometimes my boyfriend would drive me there on the weekends. Pizza from Italian pizzerias was also a treat for the weekends. Well curlygirlbri, I'm only 7 minutes into the video....but if it makes you angry, then the low calorie/low sugar food industry must have you raging. I grew up in Ireland, where we ate salt-cured bacon from pigs we killed ourselves. It was boiled with cabbage added halfway through the boil, and served with a big pot of boiled potatoes...and that was our diet every day but Friday. We ate it with loads of salted butter, and the fat bacon was cut in slices about one inch thick. I don't remember obesity being a problem, and my memories are reinforced by looking at old family photos. But then the medical professionals began telling everyone, your diet is unhealthy...and laws were passed to stop people killing their own pigs in their yards. So people began eating processed food, and followed the advice to eat low calorie etc, etc, and now obesity is a problem. What the socalled health experts didn't know, is that those pigs were allowed onto the land, where they rooted through the soil with their snouts for zinc and other vital minerals, from which we humans benefitted because the minerals were in an absorbable form in their fat....plus, if we don't have fat in every meal, our 'satiety switch' never activates, and our brains still think we need to eat more, so we stuff ourselves with carbs. The fast-food industry isn't the only one to blame...the medical industry is equally so.

@@shamrockshore6308 Oh trust me, I am well aware of the damage that the Medical and Pharmaceutical industries are doing to the human population at large. It's all about money, all of it. Money and control. Not just control of people through our bodies, but economics and personal financial standing as well if you know what I mean, it's all cyclical, everything plays into each other. They knew what they were doing when they stopped you all from having the natural resources of the people who came before you on the land and didn't feel that they had to rely on medical professionals for their "great help and knowldege". I eat a LOT of butter and fat in my diet. When I have a stable flowing income I eat largely plant based because it makes me feel the best, improved my weight and my pcos and balanced my gut and hormones. However, I also eat a lot of junk when I'm on a low budget in the form of snacks when it's just accessible and I'm doing uber deliveries all day and night, and there are no low budget healthy options available. Because the prices have also been jacked up on produce across the board and "vegan" and "vegitarian" food options are seen as a luxury instead of common place. And the fats that are used in the most cost effective meals widely available are not the same as the fats from whole sourced home cooked food, especially from animals that are caught and slaughtered organically (not the fad organic, but the real meaning of organic). I also forage around my city, whenever and wherever I can, I've even learned the seasons for about 6-7 different abundant fruits, and different plants in my area. So I'm with you in understanding. Every bit of cultural means of living, which are the most effective for human living have been attacked and sacrificed for money, power, and control of resources and people physically, mentally, financially and spiritually. I have a deep understanding and frustration of what's going on and it just gets more intense as time goes on and I learn more and more about how things have changed, and are changing, and why. I have goals to no be a part of this web, but I have to make me a way to make the changes and am looking to be of service to others who are in need of enlightening and help to better themselves in the process. Thanks for sharing your experience with me and the people in the chat too.

I live in America and you can see what happened to us. From a young age I was fed these things and to this day at the age of 55 the addiction to salt and sugar is a daily battle. As a father I was able to protect my children but it was not easy to say NO at every children's birthday party, at each gathering, people looked at me like I was a bad father to my children. I even had to stop my wife who is southeast Asian from offering them sweets. I would tell her our children are already at a disadvantage simply by being born in America, why help this sick and twisted system?? Today all three of my children are Vegan (by their choice, I am not Vegan) and of a healthy weight which we shall call skinny by America's standards where most people are fat. If you cannot stop the American fast food companies from coming then as parents you can choose to love and protect your children and future generations by refusing to buy from these monsters until they go out of business close up shop. Once they gain a foothold the addictions and the obesity and diabetes will be passed on from generation to generation, claiming many lives, subduing your best and brightest into a life of food addiction and obesity.

I told him, You'll hate, lol. You've been eating chicken with a grain. He tried, took 2 bites and said, "This really is not very good". Game, set and match! He never had artificial sweeteners either; I made Jello and pudding from scratch. Also, If you raise your kids on healthy food, they'll hardly ever get sick. My first trip to Europe was in the 70s and lived there for three years. Europeans had a distinctive look, both in clothing and a healthy look. I’ve worked in Germany off and on since then. Currently in 2022 I’m on my last job in Germany. Traveling in France, and other countries I’ve seen tremendous change in the people. Burger King has taken a strong hold especially in France. Everywhere you see young and middle age alike gorging on BK, KFC, etc . Fat folks are everywhere, especially the young. Processed, packaged, and. Fast food is everywhere. Fat is not the problem, it’s refined, processed food and sugar that is causing the obesity epidemic across the globe.

I'm from southern part of india , a town nevertheless big one. We had small bakeries, traditional tea stalls and street food stalls . Just 3 major hotels which are ranging from average to expensive according to different foods it has.
But in the last 2 years I'm seeing increase in modern food outlets..burgers , nuggets, pizza etc. These are always full. They have offers , delivery services. A new supermarket came up in town last year...the variety of things I saw there shocked me. Frozen foods , pre - made stuffs , instant foods..have never seen such things in life. Young people are going for those things these days.
Thank god for my mother who was aware of the consequences of such things. She always regulated on what we ate.

The only way to make multi- national corporations self-regulate is for governments to have robust legislation in place and to have the courage to fine them for every transgression.
With their billions spent in lobbying the same politicaians, this entire process is perverted from the outset. Remember, the neoliberal agenda is always profit first while playing lip service to public health. The result is a sick nation.
Still, the private health industry can make a killing (literally) in clearing up the junk food industries mess while at the same time cripple the public health services.

Yes it is, the rich egomanics who rule the world think the world is overpopulated. Instead of using their money to fix the planets problems, like fossil fuel usage, pollution, waste of resources, etc. They have decided to try and turn us into dumb people who die in senseless wars.
They lack foresight into the species as a whole. All they care about is maintaining their power and wealth to pass down to their spoiled children who are equally narcissistic. Some of them don't even care about their kids which is why they don't care what scientists are warning about the planets condition after they pass away.
Academics progression which innovates all industries is hampered because it's only given to a select class of society who can afford the lifestyle of studying and so on. Majority of the population does not develop the brains to actually do these courses because they are eating BS, caught in debt traps and working dead end jobs.
It's no surprise that China is now surpassing the US. Capitalist rich billionaires are a cancer to this planet. Their greed and uncaring about their future generations will be the end of humanity.
