The younger respondents here might look at very early Joni Mitchell videos if you can search them. I cannot remember how to link those here today. Especially the ones where she appeared on Canadian TV in circa 1966 before we ever heard of her in the states. I am sure by now, many young people are saying Joni who? Aimee Mann has that quality of the early Joni Mitchell but her own special style too.
I bought "The Forgetten Arm," the album that features this song. I really love it, and you're all right, it's very different from her 80s stuff. It's actually a concept album that drew inspiration from 70s folk.
I meant to add that I had seen both live Joni Mitchell in 1979 perform in her prime, then later Aimee Mann here in my home town of Portland in 1997. Joni and Aimee have very similar styles and qualities that are great examples to the newer generation of female performers.

Deniel Edwards I worked with celebrities for years in NYC as a first assistant photographer and also a photographer in my own right. I also have a friend--legendary guitarist-- who's friends with Aimee (she sang on his last studio album). He is the most kind and down to Earth guy you could ever meet. I have never known him to surround himself with anyone but like minded folk; he's only surrounded by gracious people. Perhaps she was in a hurry? Maybe she didn't feel good? Maybe she was enjoying some free time to herself--some peace and quiet? Who knows. I wouldn't take it personally. I never approached famous people in stores or restaurants because I always felt that's their private time in their private lives. I'm glad you still like her music. Would hate to think you gave up listening to her genius songwriting for a reason that could be as simple as she had a headache. She was in Trader Joe's, not on tour. Glad you cut her some slack. 🎶
Speaking of Beatles influenced, the guitar she's playing is the same Sheraton model that Lennon used in the late 60s. Mann also favors a Lennon-style Gibson acoustic.
Please don't hate me for this, but... I met her on her promo tour for "Whatever' in April 1993. After her short set, my friend and I waited around and went up and introduced ourselves. My friend, who owned a record store, and was an older woman (as opposed to some young enthusiast), said something like, "Be sure you take care of yourself on the road." When I shook Aimee's hand I thought she would break mine! I still remember the expression of surprise that we weren't groupies paying homage at the shrine.
Yeah she sounds a bit nervous and pitchy, possibly bad monitoring? Still great though...I'm particularly impressed by the bassist...what a groove! Tons going on there!
