Someone modded 8GBs of RAM onto their Switch oled, and then unlocked the resolution in Zelda to 4k, it wasn't playable but it was still impressive it ran at all
Taki, thank you for providing proper captions with your videos. It's an often overlooked accessibility feature, and I appreciate it because I personally like watching without sound sometimes. This also helps lots of people who have lesser hearing or issues with auditory processing. Very fascinating to see this little system output such resolutions, too.
My pleasure!
Fun fact: the Tegra X1 was doing 4K before the Switch was released. It would have been interesting to see the Nvidia Shield thrown into your mix.
SOC inside the Switch have many limitations:
- Old 2015 processor
- 4x A53 CPU disabled
- CPU, GPU & RAM frequency are downclock from normal
- It's not customised
Imagine all of this limitations have been eliminated + secret sauce NVN 2 API = monster power efficient handheld console ❤❤❤
@@Hazeman.the thing is, it would make a lot more heat and drain battery way too fast… I still think they should’ve made a docked only high performance version, I play mainly handheld though so it wouldn’t matter to me as much
@@th3_ne0__ you know right the gap 8 years of mobile technologies can do
4k is not a big deal to output. Just depends on the actual content.
I had the same question. Especially considering I have an old Shield tv I don't use anymore.
Upscaled psp looks so nice every time, I don't know what it is but it must be the high texture low poly combo that looks so good.
PSP was so ahead of its time. Best Handheld ever
You deserve an Olympic gold medal for your hard work and dedication. Once again, great video Taki. Thank you.
Still can't wait for the switch lite oled mod
Just buy the Switch oled version and pull out the oled screen and replace the screen on your switch lite.
@@caspicewrong, the screen is too big for the lite

The switch is gonna be amazing for modding in a couple years. Never really liked the switch but i bet I'm gonna own one once it becomes like a psp
Oh yeah ikr
"in a couple years"
Me: cautiously nudges RCM jigs under the rug
You never liked the switch!? Really? The switch is the greatest thing to ever grace gaming for the past 7 years 😂. It inspired the steam deck and other pc Handhelds. Even trash box is trying to release their own version of the switch! man, u live under a rock 😂
Been modding since 2018 baby. It’s been hacked for a long time.
I don’t like the Switch for normal use, but I love it for the homebrew use.
A minimum of 1080p @ 60fps is still good for me.
Agreed.
There was another CZcamsr who made a 3D printed docked switch pro. That stayed in docked mode by removing the screen, added a Noctua fan and over clocked without unlocking. I think if you made that 3D printed case with cooling you might be able get a few more percents better on your testing.
Checkout machonacho. He did that mod and it showed lower temps.
@@StopWars420 he is one of the ones I saw make an improved dock.
Only Taki would use a Switch to emulate a Switch (and that's why we love him).
Someone should tag Digital Foundry. They need to see this
Love the level of nerdiness in Taki's videos
Wow! Did not know about this. Excellent work Taki!
This was nuts! Very good video!
Amazing! didn't expect Switch can connect to a projector, and I'm surprised the projector's display is so impressive.
3:20 and this is where the Switch lite excels. While it cant clock as high as the v2/oled, the Oled has a NERF'D FAN ( Which no one ever talks about ) which has seen an abundance of switch HW being fried. The V1 switch OC numbers are also considered safe when applied to the switch lite, but can be a problem on other v1 HW.
The oled has a lower maximum fan rpm? That is crazy
@@MrRocking145 Yup, I was one of the first 3 people online to completely fry his OLED! lol. With the switch lite, Ive played totk at 60fps clocked at the safe OC for hours on end without frying anything!!
@@MrRocking145 not the lower rpm, the fan itself is smaller. Lite and oled use smaller fans than v1 and v2
@@percyvolnar8010 what clocks do you run to do that?
V2 should excel too then. It has the same v1 fan.
Good job on the end dude 👌
That's crazy. Amazing work you did in this video, and I loved every bit of it. Sad though, that after the hundreds of hours you dedicated to it, my favorite part is the cat :)
Never thought a projector could be an option for gaming, especially in 4K! The picture is just mind-blowing. must be awesome upgrade from the 6 inches screen to a projected screen
First time here and it's so cool how you play around and explore the limits of the devices! But I'm surprised how no one is talking about how good the games look on the projector. The picture is so crisp.
I know, right? I kinda assumed that most of it was direct capture with a Y splitter, but then this output pop-up appeared on the top left and it hit me..
Wow, the projection quality of the projector is impressive! I didn't expect a projector to reach such a high standard.
Amazing thanks for this
The picture quality on that projector looks really nice
Please make a video on how you did this. I've been wanting to try some harder to run games and this is exactly the push i needed
This man right here puts out the best conent we wanted to see ref the switch! Man i can't imagine the lenghts you had to go through to put this video together and answer all those questions.
I own a ps5, steam deck, and switch, but i must admit i am impressed with switch's performance. I wonder if my s24u could beat it in actuality with sd8gen3 🤔
the OLED Switch having more DP lanes connected together with the dock being more capable points very much at it actually being developed from the rumoured „Switch Pro“
First of all, thank you for your great video, it would have be nice if you tried using frame generation tools such as lossless scaler etc.. might be worth looking at in another video
Something I noticed, is that, at least on my smaller screens, the minimum I'm fine with is 720p, so I'm fine with the switch outputting in 720p.
Amazing work
Wow, amazing video. Insane to think this is possible.
Simply incredible to see.
awesome stuff man
Great video!!! 👍
Thanks. Here's hoping that I will not have to wait long for the OLED switch 2 to come out.
You're literally a MANIAC. Well done :D
BRA- F-in-VOOO!!!! Well done and well said at the very end 👍👍💥😲
Wow, this blow my mind!
I actually kinda appreciate Nintendo a bit knowing they still hold true to their original Gameboy era 'Lateral thinking with withered technology' maxim.
That clear plastic mod is something else man
For some strange reason i still Love the switch even though I own many other handhelds (3ds,psvita,anbernic,steam deck etc)..... Awaiting the lite oled mod
Hey Taki,
Great video! Thanks for the deep dive and for explaining it in a way that I could understand lol.
Any date or time frame for the switch lite oled mod?? I’m super hyped for it

@@TakiUdon thank you!
Don't know if you have seen it, but there was a guy who soldered 8GB of ram to his OLED Switch, search it up, he had videos of him testing games with it, but he deleted them for some reason, but the videos where he does the thing are still up (i think his channel is called naga)
I'm going to have to try a bunch of these out
I’d be really curious to see if the switch that zac builds built with the modded dock could do anything more since he gave it an adequate cooling system for the thermal demands of overclocking
Nice video, would like some other videos on the NS Lite.
Does someone have some good setings for Fizeau to get the best out of the Switch lite screen please?
3:20 and with these stats..
Battery life and heat would be the two main factors..
Build a shell for the switch that will channel the heat out of the switch snd allow for a bigger battery.
As someone who has been really going down the research rabbit hole of getting an arm laptop for everyday linux use, this video was eye opening in a whole different way. Would there be any chance of a similar emulation style showcase on the pinebook pro or even a previous gen snapdragon 8cx? While not the intention of your video, if the switch can pump out this much power It makes me more optimistic for trying to make the change to an arm based computer.
Your cat chasing the cursor is the best part of the video
This is very cool, thank you
I'm mind blown by all what I've seen, time to process everything. On the other hand, more catto, please!
crispy doom is software rendered so it actually doesn’t render on the gpu at all, it’s just raw cpu so that’s why crispydoom was running slower
That screen tearing may be an Nvidia issue.
On Linux, the new display system Wayland has tearing issue with Nvidia due to Nvidia not having their drivers fully up to date for it. (The fixes to solve the issue have been pushed back 4 times now but SHOULD be there in driver 560 at the latest). If the Switch was an AMD GPU this tearing may not happen as on Wayland compositors by default there is always v-sync all the time on everything.
Now if the Switch Linux is rendering with the old Xorg/X11 system this is not applicable
never doubted that it was powerful enough because I also use an Nvidia Shield TV, which is the same SoC.
I never considered playing games on a projector, but it seems pretty awesome, especially when it can handle 4K gaming.🔥
I think there should be a SteamOS- Like front end OS based on linux for modded switches that plays Switch games sort of like how the original xbox could install linux dashboards and still play the games.
Still holding out for that OLED screen and video output for the Lite. Would love an update on that, if it's still happening.
I got given a Switch Lite and it's a much nicer form factor than the other Switch models to me, but the lack of video out is awful, and it's second-hand so the screen isn't in the best shape (if there's an OLED screen coming, it's not worth getting one of the inferior-to-stock LCD replacements).
*Reads title* - Ok, you have my attention.
16:34 correction ships port does not run at 60fps but 20fps and used interpretation to make it feel like 60 FPS but it’s not true 60 FPS and it’s very easy to tell. If you want 60 FPS. Use open ocarina of time it has up to 120 FPS and it’s more accurate and it looks better overall.
I'm surprised Nintendo didn't upclock these in dock mode to begin with (Nvidia Shield Pro with the same Tegra processor has a much higher clockrate).
Dock could do with a slight redesign to support improved cooling to support a higher clock rate.
You just made me really miss my Wow days. Pandaria killed it for me
For me if gamecube goes 1x native 720p i am happy... I wish someone port dolphin for horizon OS.
I hope custom Switch OS won't spawn random cats jumping out of nowhere. Devs should probably investigate that bug.
lol

Great video man. Im always concerned about creators making switch content because I swear those nintendo ninjas are just peeking into windows at all times Lol
I am genuinely blown away by how well Linux games run on the Switch. Usually putting an operating system on top of consoles like this doesn't end well to say the least. The fact that you can do lighter games at all at 4k is amazing. Makes me wonder if they did have some internal plans to support 4k resolutions on at least the OLED switch that fell through once they started on the Switch 2.
I mean this to me is a sign that the next Switch should be capable of all of this with ease and maintain good battery life when undocked. I assume it will upscale when docked only just like this example. I am excited for the future.
i would love to see a deep dive into the box84/wine/dxvk option with modern hardware like SD 8gen1/2/3...
sins those last SOC switch emulation become a bit too easy unless u push high resolution and even that is qinda dead now.
so actual old/oldish PC games can be super interesting, maybe even more than switch emulation...
Wouldn't it be great if they had released a console only version of the Switch with adequate cooling and clocked to its full potential? I never play handheld and I really would love just you know like anti-aliasing on my games.
Hmmm I wonder if I can do this nearly as well with my Shield Tablet with the tegra K1. Maybe not 4k, but might do 2.5k.
Imagine a switch oled motherboard (modded/hacked) in an 15.6 inches PC case with 120mm AIO cooling solution and a freaking 15.6 touch LCD slapped at the side of it with giant battery. A luggable powerful switch the size of a briefcase that can game anywhere and not break a sweat! Not to forget good speakers with bass all tucked in.
Oh my god , you read my mind. I was super interested in the overclock feature of the switch lite from the previous video and planning on overclock mine tommorrow but still can get any guide on doing so. Perfect timing lol
Maybe someone can figure out a complex video output mod to make it work natively on the Lite, but it seems nobody has tried that. I'm not an expert on the architecture, and I expect it'd be a pretty complicated mod along the lines of installing a modchip in an OLED Switch, but I'd be keen either way.
Amazing. I NEED your tutorial
Also the ship of harkinian port can use 3ds textures and models. It plays how the 3ds should've. Give it a try!
My (unmodded) switch also has issues with V-sync in the stock switch OS - I always thought it was an issue with the dock or my TV but maybe it's an issue with the switch hardware.
Impressive find. I had o laugh at the fact that the best way to play switch games on a switch was via emulation. The only thing not covered was exactly what the thermals are to determine whether it is a viable option for continuous use.
You can see the thermals in the MangoHud window whenever it is shown. Temps peak at around 65C with the biggest games I tested.
bro playing wow on a switch is what we dreamed of back in the day thats crazy.
Man, you make me want to buy an OLED to hack it as a retro handheld, but I got a GPD Win 4 with a 7640U instead, hopefully it is easier enough
Bro your cat gave me jumpscare almost threw my phone thinking it is a bug on my screen(laying in a black room)💀💀
Nice!! I want to do it on Warframe, to get better fps and resolution, but its a online game.. would it work or they would find out?
Warframe is probably more than the Switch could handle. Plus it's for x86-64, so you would need to use box64 (which is doable, but still more layers)
Do you have a screen mod in your V1? At around 3:36 you're talking about your V1 Switch docked and outputting to an external screen, but it looks as though you're using an OLED with your V1-mod joycons attached. Have I misunderstood? My wife is using my V1 at the moment so I'd love to know if there's a better screen I can install for her.
You gotta be kidding me
Insane
Next Gen switch: same exact hardware, a few tweaks to clock speed. A teeny bit more ram. Bigger battery and liquid metal cooling.
Well, it may seem like it could do 4K, but it'd put a lot more stress on the hardware and probably kill it after awhile. I think CPU's are clocked at what they're clocked at for a reason. There have always been those who like to experiment with overclocking to get more out of a CPU, but I think it's a very bad idea to do that unless you're super knowledgeable about whatever CPU you're overclocking.
Could you try this again but set the games to 2K 60fps? Because, theoretically, they could launch a system update and a new dock that could use this resolution so we don't have to buy a new console, just the dock.
Something tells me that they will have some kind of upgrade for existing users apart from just the usual next console. Like a WiiU done right.
Also, they did say they'll make it easier for users to bring their libraries to the next generation. Maybe by doing that?
Also also, not sure why we as humans skipped the 2K/1440p resolution on TVs and monitors as a default before 4K. I have a ultrawide 2K monitor and it is absolutely fine, I'd rather have 2K/60 than 4K/30.
I'm so sorry, that cat? Legendary
I'm impatiently waiting for the Switch Lite Video-Out mod 😫
I am so ready for the switch lite oled mod ....please Taki...Make it happen .....I am your number 1 fan btw ....😅
YOUR CAT IS SO CUTE OMG
Is there a guide to setting up emulation like this? Never realized the Switch has the potential to run GC games at full speed.
My only thought about all of this is if you can do it on the Switch then couldn't you do it on the Nvidia Shield if you are just looking for non native gaming? Be interested to see how it would fair. Just like the Switch it had an original version and then a refresh. Not talking about the 32-bit only tube version.
Cool for such old hardware.
Probably won't read this but in the off chance you do..... I'm looking to put linux/android on my modded OLED..... Just looking at switchroot and there's a few different distros that I can't find much info about. Do you have a recommendation of which distro to use?
