How to get in and out of trouble with your motorcycle

  • I'll show you the best way to test if you and your bike are ready for a real adventure. I’ve learnt how important it is to focus on preparing yourself for when things don’t go to plan.
It's important to get a feel for what it means to suffer … thirsty, hungry, exhausted, boiling hot or freezing cold, you need to know what it means to suck it up and get it done when there’s no one around to do it for you.
For the past few weeks, I’ve been preparing my T7 World Raid for a mission across Australia with one of my mates. I kinda know what to expect, all the more reason I’m battle-prepping the bike.

I’ve had something similar happen to me last winter. Driving on a frozen river (ice studs) I broke through. Front tire broke through and I got sent flying over the bars, bike slowly sank to the bottom of the river as the ice below the bike gave way. . Luckily only 4-5’ deep. I dragged the bike across the muddy river bed, in chest deep freezing water up to the shore while breaking up ice as I went along.
Long story short managed to get the bike up top of the ice and started on a long walk back to the highway where I was able to be picked up.
Bike had to spend the day along the river bank until I could retrieve it next day.
Drz lived on drained the fuel and oil and she was ready for more adventures
    Cheers

Adam, I have been following you from the beginning, and whilst I totally get you don't need it yourself (yet), please consider talking about the Eastbound Moto-Winch because a lot of people like myself (who sadly ain't 25 years old anymore but like go on solo RTW adventures), might like to have the reassurance that when TSHTF, if all else fails, they can always use it to pick up their bike. Maybe they never use it, but psychologically, when riding alone, for less than 1.5 kilos of weight, it is a major reassurance. BTW, when I was 22, I rode around 23,000 kms around OZ, Perth to Perth, via Sydney, Melbourne, Cairns, Darwin and everywhere else, and I know that the lying out in the Nullarbor looking up at the billions of stars in a perfect clear night sky will always remain the most inspiring memory of my entire time on this planet.

Hey Adam, you've really inspired me to get out there in the world and push my limits and comfort zone. Next year I'm taking 5 weeks off and heading in whichever direction I feel like starting from home in Norway. I've learnt a lot from your channel, but still have a lot more to learn. As it stands I've not yet decided on which adventure bike to get, but I imagine whatever bike I choose it'll serve me well on my journey from pavement to gravel, dirt, water and whatever else may find me out there.
Here's to hoping theres plenty more videos on basic maintenance both while close to civilization, as well as in-the-field problems and possible solutions - you make the learning experience not only highly interesting but also very educational, and most important of all, practical. It might not capture any great scenery, doesn't get you flashy slow-motion shots - but to me it's some of the more valuable stuff you put out there in preparation for my own humble beginnings as an adventure rider.
Best regards, some bloke in Norway

Also road through a massive ice cold rain storm a few years back on that same bike, that wasn't fun being frozen without a sweat shirt or anything for 2 hours lol

I was sweatin' and pantin' right along with you in that water trap, Adam. This is exactly what trail riding big bikes up north in Ontario is like all the time, except your trees and plants are way cooler. You have to be cardio and strength fit to do this stuff, and at my age (65 in about five minutes), somewhat mindful of dropping dead from a heart attack while hauling a 450lb beast out of a bog. Last Sat, I was standing and crossing a large cafe au lait water hole on my 950SE, couldn't see the bottom, when the front wheel dropped down a foot-deep rut and threw me overboard with a splash. Lost my phone and keys in it. All part of the thrill of it. So happy you didn't water her. I completely submerged my previous SE while running once. Took nine oil changes to get the water out of the crankcase. We are strange and lucky people inhabiting a sacred world.

We still need an ultrasonic wildlife alarm, signal rocket, bear repellent spray, alarm weapon against animals, and all kinds of survival equipment, because what we didn't take with us is always the most needed. I have a biker friend who only goes into the wilderness with studded tires. He just believes in that.I had a motorcycle that I wound a steel chain on the rear wheel and screwed the ends together with an M8 metric screw. I didn't even get stuck with it on the ice. Back then, there were still snowy winters here. But there has been no snow or ice for twenty years. Desertification is beginning in Hungary, even though for two thousand years it was Europe's fruit and vegetable orchard. Now, if someone threw a cigarette butt, this little country would burn down. Fair play. It shows what determination & the right bike can do. Certain "adventure bikes" that I won't name would have been impossible to get out of the mud by yourself. Keep the vids coming.

I know you dont like the weight of panier racks (and they do add some decent weight). But I have kept my on my 790 because they give me a super great lifting point if the back end gets bogged down. If it sinks into mud, you can stand behind it and it becomes an easy straight arm dead lift by holding the bottom of each side of the rack. You can then walk the back end wherever you need it.

Thanks for showing all the challenges on your rides, it goes to show sometimes things don’t work the way we hope or plan but it’s part of the adventure. It’s in those times that we need to embrace the suck and overcome.
The T7 is still a big machine, I’m just glad you’re not on a big GS or some other bloated “adventure” bike running the same route.

Great work Adam, watching you pull that beast out took me straight back to 1982 when I did similar into a muddy ravine on a sand bank. I bent one handlebar 90' pulling my DT 125 out. Surprizing where the power comes from when you know the tide is also coming back in to take my new bike away. I was watching your bars flexing and thinking 'Don't snap'

Excellent video! I find it very difficult to film anything when in those situations. I have been stuck BAD deep in the mountains of Washington State - with a DRZ400 while wearing a pack. But getting a big adventure bike loaded with luggage stuck in a swamp? Epic! You handled it really well....just kept trying different angles of attack over and over until it worked. I noted a lot of water spraying out of the exhaust...I'm glad it didn't hydrolock when it was submerged. That would have been a much bigger task getting it out of there and running again. :)

Oh man, Adam... this was tough. Wasn't the material, wasn't the rider. Just very tough for soloriding on a big bike adventure. Decisions, decisions. Awesome that You film the work. I have had my share of this on solo rides. With both lighter bikes and heavier, I have unfortunately not filmed those parts, probably because I felt embarrassed to myself 😂. The adrenalin makes you breathe heavy even without the workout beginning. Have been laying beside the bike and sipping all of my water in the bladder while wrestling a bike out of mud. Each time I have promised myself to not do those explores solo... yet it happens because of my curiosity ...on what's around the corner or if it's possible to get thru... Happy Trails Adam! 💪🤠🔥

Real Word example you to get unstuck in the mud and water alone.
