100% mate. You are 100% correct. I worked on the Careflight Rapid Repsonse Trauma Team (HERRTT) helicopter in Sydney for 4 years. Prior to that it was called the head injury response. Four of the trauma doctors are the best in their field which was/is head trauma. They did very thorough studies on motorcycle and bicycle helmets over many years and the results were eye opening.
Great to have someone of your experience and authority in the field help validate what I've outlined in this video. I think many people will appreciate it, Clay.
Any chance you can dig up links to those studies, or the doctors' names to go look for them? They sound like interesting reading! I'm mostly just finding studies comparing with or without any helmet at all when I google.
Did they all endorse Fox helmets above all as well? 🤐

Sorry to hear about your concussion experience. A guy that was a motor accident investigator, l think, from Victoria, investigated injuries. He came up with a helmet design which won a Inventors Award. Kali Protectives from Camada picked it up and use his cone head design in these helmets. Good value and worth a look at their site.

Mate you are so right, I went off a 40 metre cliff landed on my head in an expensive Shoei that was brand new and fit me properly. Now I was knocked out briefly broke a lot of bones including most of my knock which is now titanium and only lost the fall from my memory. I broke endless bones but really had no real concussion knew where I was immediately, knew what had happened and no lasting effects. Not advocating for Shoei and have other brands but quality is worth it.

From what I read, impacts that cause the head to rotate suddenly are the worst for concussion. Some newer helmets claim to reduce this by letting the shell rotate a bit on the liner.

Just came across your channel today, thank you for sharing the knowledge of this area, and some fantastic experiences you have lived. Much appreciated and all the best for the future content.
It depends on the certification. As far as I remember, ECE22-05 (and maybe the new 22-06) don’t include a penetration test. That’s a test that SNELL and DOT require. The density of the foam (usually EPS) has to correspond to the highest impact of the test and not bottom out (somewhere around 7-8 m/s). This is terrible for low impacts where low density EPS would be preferred. SNELL and DOT didn’t have low speed impacts so you might see all high density foam.
ECEC22-06 has 3 or 4 different impact speeds, so the only way to pass is have multiple densities of foam, sometimes 2 or 3 or more densities. MOTOCAP (formerly CRASH) in Aus/NZ had a very low speed impact test (about 4 m/s - like a fall from the seat to the ground) and Fox V3 performed the best on all tests, scoring very well at all speeds. It’s a very good helmet but it’s been replaced by a redesigned V3. I hope they didn’t screw up the redesign because Fox got it right years ago.
Personally, I chose by certification so my latest motocross lid is ECE 22-06 Certified.
Great stuff Adam! It's so awesome that you've started the conversation about a topic that few are brave enough to discuss. Sure there's a risk of injury when riding dirt bikes, but our helmets should offer great protection, like we assume they do. 🤔
You've pointed out probably the biggest issue with helmets - being that the EPS foam in our helmets is too hard to do what we expect it to do; soak-up impact energy from a crash!! You also raise another spot-on point that Standards should be raised higher and higher. Standards haven't changed much for years (decades)... until the introduction of the new FIM Standard in October 2019.
Thankfully the FIM have created the new elevated helmet Standards that are going to get stronger over 5 planned revisions, from memory. They should drag all the other Standards into the modern era and helmets with them! They are on-road focussed but so are all existing helmet Standards. The variability of off-road crashes is too hard to generate lab tests for, so they're sticking to the on-road Standards. Anyway, do these new FIM Standards translate into less concussions? Only time will tell. But it's a step in the right direction, finally.
Let's hope off-road FIM-Standard-helmets start to be developed and then appear on shelves ASAP!! ✌
The unfortunate thing is that helmet standards are just now catching up to addressing concussion causing impacts. But fortunately they are catching up.
I think that just because a helmet is expensive doesn’t necessarily mean it’s safe either. There are some helmets out there that are just expensive because of materials or features, not because of safety. Some brands (6D, Bell, Leatt…etc) are known for prioritizing safety and pushing innovation when it comes to protection, so they are the ones getting my money.
Great fun vid! I think the topic is even more vast as new helmets have different technologies to avoid all kind of head injuries like mips and special foam/rubber inserts to better absorb the solicitations of a crash.

A very informative video thanks. Two sons and their father in our family have many occasions to thank our quality helmets for. There is no substitute for quality when it comes to protecting your head, my many years as a paramedic proved that also.
Talk about timing, at the docs yesterday (not for a head injury!) and they were playing a video about concussions & recovery from them. Wake up this morning & this video is on my to view list. Big big reminders to me how serious concussions can be & not having the right gear can multiply the severity.
Currently looking at getting a new lid, and Adam’s video has convinced me to be even more thorough in the buying process. I go by fit first before looking at the bling or anything else of a helmet, maybe fit & quality of construction need to be considered hand in hand.

THANKS - SO much - for your insights, which I have NOT seen emphasized (or admitted) in so called helmet reviews. You've placed proper emphasis on INNER vs. outer impact resistance; it seems that the 'tests' don't examine inner cushion impact ABSORPTION. I've watched this video several times; it's WORTH it. Concussions are scary. I can remember around 10 times where I have had concussion symptoms after a crash/impact. Most of them happened on BMX and DH tracks and were quite minor, since luckily I was wearing a decent quality lid. But there were 2 times where I woke up in a hospital without having a clue what had happened or even what day or month it is. The second time was trippy. I woke up alone in a hospital room, had a bloody face, no idea what's going on. When I checked my phone, I noticed that it was my birthday, so that was a very surreal feeling. One of those knockouts happened when I was a kid and fell down from a free and the other one as a teenager just riding my bike in the city without a helmet.
Because of my head-injury history I have been very careful moving into enduro riding and try to always go for high-quality safety gear. For fast riding I use 6D ATR-2 helmet and for slow hard enduro riding I use Airoh Aviator 2.3 AMS2. 6D feels more solid than Airoh, but is significantly heavier and warmer. Both are top quality helmets with great safety features.
That is the best analysis if helmets I have ever seen. Will definitily be looking at my lids different from now on. Thanks
Great video, we often judge a helmet by what it looks like on the shelf or how it feels trying it on. I've bought cheap $150 helmets before and I really should have something better than I have. This vid shows there way more to it than the ANSI rating or whatever. All helmets meet that standard but not 'all' helmets are safe. I just putt round on an XR650R, but I need better safety gear for sure.

Ive had 6 concussions the same as what your talking about every helmet was a flash looking cheap pos, 2 I broke the side face out of, losing those hrs between being out and head coming back online some times doesnt come back an memory loss that 2 3 years later you maybe remember something youd forgoten because of the crash, it's very scary, great video man I'm on board something needs to change.

Thank god for ECE 2206. I had a concussion a year ago after a crash with a car. It's definitely a relief to know that starting in 2024 no helmet will be allowed to be sold without passing a concussion test as well (at least in the EU). Great vid!
Nice video Adam i totaly agree, unfortunately I already found out the hard way... After i had a fast get off +/-80km/h head first and not being able to work, sleep drive a car watch tv and more for 2 months i only buy high end and well tested helmets. Haven't had a bad concussion since and 1 or 2 get offs that could have caused 1. I would definitely recommend every one to do your resource, and not buy a base model or not known brand. Still even with good stuff shit can go wrong... It's not worth the short or long term Brain damage Trust me. I still have Trouble in some stuff after the concussion 5 years ago. Stuff that i could do easily before...

Had a few knocks myself... first playing rugby as a kid then experimenting inertia with trees and immediately knew I had to invest in keeping the old melon safe. Now it's totally natural for me to excuse a 500€ bill on a disposable item.
for context: I do my best riding enduro despite my hemiparesis, had brain surgery aged 16, can't run, have very limited use of my left hand (still can sort of clutch but I have a rekluse autoclutch on my CRF450R).... suffice to say I care about keeping the brain happy.

I have the same experience.
In an accident in 2012 I had an HJC helmet on my head and suffered a small brain bleed and concussion. I don't remember a thing about the next 5 days, but it took months to remember passwords and stuff.
So I started looking into why becauce I have crashed with a Arai Tour X on my head, but then I just got up and brushed the dust off my clothes.
In any case, I came to the same conclusion as you, that there is too hard material inside "cheap" helmets.
I also read that Arai tested "deformation zones" such as when they drop a weight with the force of 1G it should be 0.3G or less over a larger area inside the helmet.
So after this I decided that I will only use Arai helmets.

I'm a little torn by this, because I love the core message and a lot of the information, but think you got a little in the weeds speculating. And that's fine with your mates, but when you do it on a big platform you can end up doing more harm than good. Your experiences and those of riders you know is really valuable to hear, and the thumb test is really compelling - but I'm not 100% sure it is totally valid. And of course we don't know what the other helmets would do with an arrow, and hopefully we're never seeing anything like that coming at our heads 🤞 - would have felt more meaningful if you'd shot a cheap helmet maybe, but I trust that part was just for fun anyway.
I did go out and compare the helmets in my garage, and my retired Arai street helmet was far and away the softest, while a cheap HJC street helmet (that granted is retired and 15 years old) was disturbingly hard. But I was happy to see that my inexpensive ($120?) O'neal mx lid wasn't too bad, or my $400ish Bell street, in between the HJC and Arai. Definitely don't want everyone poking their thumbs into all the helmets in the store though, they're going to crush all that foam before my head gets in it! 😅
Yes I agree it can be a bit controversial and possibly speculative but bringing the discussion out into the open and making people think about these issues is more important.
The thumb test was my 'light bulb' moment many years ago. (Although I tested the EPS at the back, underside of my helmet). 🤔 You are right to say that it's best not to go sticking your thumb/finger into the EPS foam of helmets that you're thinking of buying, as it does put a little dent in the EPS.
One of the downsides to EPS is that it doesn't rebound very much, so that dent is basically permanent. Whilst one thumb print may not seem significant, everyone doing it in shops as well as at the MX track and around campfires when this stuff gets talked about - will all add up and lessen the protection of your helmet. So I'm sure @ARiemann1 will probably alter this advice in a future episode!
There's an independent helmet testing organisation called CRASH that does Star ratings for a bunch of helmets. Even though we all buy helmets that we think look cool, how protective they are should be a big consideration and CRASH provide this information.
yeah the whole arrow test is totally invalid if you ask me. Helmets are designed to protect from blunt hard impacts not pointy arrows that are designed to pierce. A 80lb bow is going to blow straight though most things anyway.

What an awesome video and this is a story that must be, must be told!! Thanks Adam for doing so. There is a problem in the industry today whereby profits exceed personal safety! You can go into a motorcycle accessory shop and buy a helmet for $150 - and it is Australian Standards approved, or SNELL or DOT!! What they don't tell you is that the helmet in fact is dangerous - that is what this video is all about. Being a motorcycle rider for nearly 40 years, I learnt early on that cheap is bad, very bad. If your going to put your life in the hands of a device, make sure that devise is well engineered, well made and thoroughly tested!
Hey mate loved the video and bought Shoei for the best part of 50years on a bike and keep them for no more than 6years because foam hardens over time. On a side note as a archer for many years and coach rule of thumb is if you can’t draw the bow with it in the horizontal position it is over weighted try dropping to 70lb and work up, reason it put undue pressure on your shoulders and an accidental release with mechanical release aid the arrow could land anywhere. Not a problem on the farm but the shoulder is. Advice go local club and get some coaching.
Great info. Just checked my helmets. Shoei helmet foam is pretty pliable. My LS2 Subverter really isn't. Bought the LS2 for the ventilation. All my riding is technical single track & i overheat which eventually leads to headaches. Maybe better foam will help me more than extra ventilation.

Awsome video once again! You are 100% right about bikes and helmets. I've recently upgraded to a bigger bike so I'm looking for a new/better helmet. The rule is simple people; Bigger bike = more speed = beter helmet. Don't ride the big bikes with the cheap stuff. It can save your life.
Bang on mate unplugged is exactly it I always been running bell and arai skid lids since I got the knockout and lost partial sight in my right eye lost 3 days remember nothing about it but the head cam shot hit a stump at 140 very lucky indeed stil ride hard but for Christ sake buy good gear aye it’ll keep you riding and not dying goodonya mate cheers

I always wear full gear in the bush and after being collected on the road 30 years ago, I never go out without FULL gear,
rain hail or shine, 10 degrees or 40 deg celsius.

A read a sign a long time ago at a Frankston bike store in the workshop, went something like this. "There are good riders & there are bad riders, there are old riders & there are young riders. There aren't too many old bad riders.
Mate never have thought of it, I’ve always used quality helmets and have only had Fox helmets except one oneal, have had massive stacks head impacts only been knocked out once, but half way through I went and grabbed out one of my fox helmets and got my daughter’s old RXT helmet and did the finger test. Massive difference I actually feel bad that I put that thing on my daughters head given the fact I brought it from the local Honda dealer and the RXT is Australian made quality and guaranteed advanced protection. The thing is hard and when you’ve had heavy head impacts I’m honestly glad I never had cheap shit on. Im sure cheap shit is better than nothing but when it comes your brains don’t cheap out, honestly destroying and throwing the RXT in the bin no one else will use it at my hands.

I appreciate that you made a video about this important topic. I think we all want better protection. I am very tired of two things however. One is the marketing BS stating that I need protection from some other event, multiple hits, sliding, twisting, ECT, over impact protection first. The second is the boring and dangerous cliche that "you get what you pay for". This more absorbing EPS you discuss may not be any more expensive at all. If I am paying for engineering and testing that is explained to the consumer, I'm in line with my wallet. If I'm paying for a brand name, fancy graphics, and some company that moved production to the cheap producer to save costs to leverage a brand to make more profits I'm out. My Fox boots (and.other protection) absolutely sucked BTW, I wouldn't trust them to make a helmet I'd put on my head.

It's why I don't use old helmets any more too. Still appreciate the reinforced plastic quality helmets as they distort and absorb some of the impact too. Depends what you are doing and how lucky you are!

100% Agree. I was wearing a $150 adventure helmet just started off and clicked into second gear then don't remember much after that. woke up on the ground. Don't remember riding home. Bad head aches for a week. This was a slow crash but first point of contact was my head on the ground. Someone had set a bike trap that resulted in my Africa Twin being stopped then me going over the handle bar.
Riding Yamaha’s and now shooting a bow… love it. I used the foam from an old Bell helmet for a target once arrow went straight through into the shed pissed the old man off a bit and that was with an old 40lb recurve growing up on a farm.

Coming from a world silver medal holder in IFFA and ABA, id recommend getting wrist sling to let the bow drop forward so you dont get that reach and grab as you take the shot, its helps prevent flinching and sending the arrow on a abnormal path.
Other then that love the video mate, as a stunt rider this information is extremely important for us as we take some hard hits when we f#$k up a wheelie or stoppie. ❤
Good stuff Adam. Stuff goes bad really quickly and does not need speed either. My Bell saved my life 2 weeks ago, still get dizzy spells, but probably would have been a different story in a cheap helmet. Replaced it with another Bell, worth every penny
Hey Adam, man such an important subject! Long story short - I slid out around a corner at the Jarrahwood/Capel 200 Enduro track (I see your form the South West so you would know the track) and hit a tree knocking myself clean out. In the following weeks it then turned into PCS (Post Concussion Syndrome) which lasted several months - I had to resign from work, developed severe anxiety, it cost me A LOT of money and I withered away as a person. 14 months on I am back part time at work and feeling so much better but there was a time where I really thought I wouldn't get through it all.
I had a V1 at the time which was cheap and incorrect for my head and I often wonder if a good helmet would have helped me. The baseline standard in Australia SHOULD be whatever the newest/safest technology is out there, helmet fitment SHOULD be specialist course for motorcycle salespeople and cheap helmets SHOULD NOT be a thing. I now run a Fly Formula, fits incredibly well for me.

Such great content mate , as a lot of people not just dirt bike riders but all sports like to use or wear what they see professionals using. So as you said if a professional is using garbage this could a bad influence on people's decisions.
Wouldn't want to ride on your property uninvited with those 80 pound helmet head shots rolling around 😅. After well over shooting a big sand dune 3rd gear on my cr250 07 having a massive stack over the bars and full knock out where my vision faded to dark and a few broken bones few months later to get back on the bike the helmet had a broken visor. To be honest and with out the knowledge I pretty much only got a new helmet as the visor was busted. I had no idea on the foam and impact. Stupid and hard to admit but that's the reality of maybe quite a few amature riders.
Great information that every rider should know, thank you! Also remember that the aging foam also becomes harder and less compliant over time, even with the most expensive helmets and with or without use. My six-year-old Arai XD-4 is due for replacement by now.
Just replaced my street Rpha Max for the same reason. I'd trust it for in town use, but it's not worth cheaping out for the possibility of a freeway speed injury messing up your brain.
I had a BIG off 2 years ago , I was wearing an Airoh Commander ADV helmet. ( it was 6 weeks old ) I went over the bars and hit a tree , I got back on the bike and kept riding even through all my mates said I should go to hospital. The rear base of the helmet has a extended base area - for a neck brace etc , unfortunately that part of the helmet hit the log on the ground . SO sometime latter after being at home was rushed to hospital 🏥 and had to have brain 🧠 surgery from a 6 cm brain bleed . I now use a Arai as it’s Japanese helmet and a complete round shape ( in theory will roll of stuff not dig in . Fantastic advice mate 👍

Hey Adam. I just watched your helmet special. That crash I had last year the day after Steve Mouritz, well I've got a photo of my forehead when I got off the helicopter with a huge butterfly shaped bruise from the impact. Yes I was knocked out and concussed. Broken vertebrae the lot. When I got home I checked the inner shell of my top range m2r helmet and was shocked. Indents and cracks thru the forehead part of shell. Cracked cheek shells and very lil damage to outer shell. I immediately shelved it and bought the top range alpine star with airbag tech. Haven't had a chance to wear it due to the spinal injuries sustained but about to get back on the seat. I would love to hear your opinion on the alpine and comparative helmeys that really are the real deal!
Great information i wasnt aware of. I checked my helmet and my daughters new helmets after watching this. My 2013 Fox V3 has the soft foam shell 👍. My eldest daughters new Thor Sector has a very hard foam shell 👎. My youngest daughters new Oneal 5 series has nice soft foam shell + emergency chin pad release + is only $179 👍👍

Great video and advice. Where are you on how long you should keep a helmet? Assuming you have looked after it and never sat it down on the top etc. Also this is why I never buy a second hand helmet, what if it has been been dropped and the foam compressed, just too dangerous. Cheers

Cannot believe the timing of this video. Had my biggest off on Sunday and am now searching for a new helmet. Full body CT, x-rays, etc. Bloody lucky. Will likely get the same brand and model. Whilst I can't feel a depression in the inner foam, I'm not taking any risks and am going to renew. Started questioning whether I should have been wearing my neck brace...
From what I have read. The foam is just to stop fractures. Not to brain shake.
Usually the concussion come from a double impact.
The first blow from hitting the ground. Then the second blow from your head hitting the inside of the helmet.
This is why its important to have a snug helmet. To stop or reduce the second impact.
Thats why its best to get Mips or Fim certified helmet with a proper fit.
Hi ARiemann1 what is your thoughts on the MIPS rating long time moto rider here. Can you do more reviews on helmets as have had some very hard impacts as well.

Great video, thanks for sharing your experience, however, it is a very complex topic, shooting the helmet was cool, but regardless of helmet one would sustain head injury absorbing energy of an arrow even when not penetrating the helmet…, they are designed to absorb energy and got their limits such as our skull and brain. The point is to get homolgated helmet, looks like the strictest restrictions while testing are met by FIM homologated helmets. Safe rides everyone.
