    Peter, that was a great demonstration on controlling the split. When you go to plane the side rails, do you let them dry a bit first or do it in this state? I'm sorry if you've addressed this question in another video on your channel, that I've missed.

      Split some open & see what's happening inside. Often even when the sapwood is compromised, the heart wood will still be sound. Not always, but more often than not.

    Hi Peter I lack a band saw... I wonder if you can do a video on splitting techniques with wedges and froe on straight hard wood logs in order to make true quarter sawn board 28 inch or 40 inch length , 2-4 inch thickness and 2.5-8 inch width . ( i will then rip saw these down again as needed)
    the current technique I use is half split the log then quarter then I have always been too chicken to try split the quarters! I always just rip saw them from then its quite a workout but better this way with the japanese katana saw as it has a thin kerf and wastes little wood!
    Thanks alot I like your videos!

    Can large sections of sap wood be of any use? I have a 26" diameter white oak log, yet it has a 3" radius of sap wood. I'd hate to not make something of that much wood.

    • @MrFollansbee
      @MrFollansbee  Před 3 lety +2

      depends how fresh it is. Sapwood when it's fresh is almost white. As it goes "off" it turns grey. So if it's leaning towards white, it will still have the strength you need. If it's discolored, it makes great firewood.
