Hi, Makayla Oct 2021 was my 40th year of living as a C5-6 quadriplegic. You have started on a new journey with many twists and turns; keep a positive attitude! Much will change; you will continue to grow more independent. You will look back in five years; much of what you are doing now will look much different. You probably will no longer need compression socks or a belly band to maintain your blood pressure. You will not need as much assistance from others. I encourage you to pursue learning to drive one of the best things I have ever done. Just a little about me I am married, have two children, I work, and drive by myself most times. I wish you the very best. David

@@karyndewit193 It’s not unusual. If a person’s spinal cord is severed, there is no chance of recovering function. However, if the spinal cord is injured in a less serious way, it can swell or just be damaged. People who have this type of injury have a good chance of recovery. One day she felt a muscle twitch in her leg. Fast forward to winning medals for swimming in the Paralympics, then total recovery. Now, you would never know it happened by looking at her. The accomplishments you have made are Huge! I can relate 100% as I broke my neck Nov. 2018. I was paralyzed and they didn't know the prognosis as everyone is different. After 2 most at Craig Hospital and 6 most. At QLI in Nebraska I was able to walk. It's not the same as before but I am grateful everyday. You will get stronger and be able to do tons more as time passes no matter if it's in a wheelchair or not. I will keep you in my prayers for continued progress and love.

I suffered a penetrating brain injury.. My parents were told it was very unlikely I would survive the 1st 24 hours then they were told if I did survive I would have severe cognitive issues then they were told I would never walk or feed myself or be independent in any way again...I walk (with a limp & cane), have zero cognitive problems & am 100% independent.. I am not going to lie & tell you it's easy my left arm left leg from the knee down are paralyzed..I have a lot of pain and a couple other health problems..its been 6 years I'm still in physical & occupational therapy & go to all of my different doctors multiple times a month but I'm alive, happy & my favorite thing to do is prove the people wrong who tell me I cant do something! Hey girl I did Semester at Sea back in 2017. We had a professor on the ship in a power wheelchair and she was able to do everything, just in a little different way! If you want to go, definitely don’t let it stop you. It was the best experience I have ever had. You got this!

I just came across your video on “day in a life,” and immediately I just felt that you are going to do things physically that surpass everything that your doctors are saying. It seems like you’ve done so much in these months since your accident and I only see it improving and improving at a rate that is going to blow everyone’s minds. I love your spirit, I admire your mom and sister in their servanthood and I see so many blessings for you and your family this season❤️

I dont even know how I stumbled upon you.. maybe bc my 14 yr old is a cheerleader, idk though. But as a 33 yr old mama, I'm so amazed at the wisdom a 17 year old could have. That's something that cannot be taught or faked. I am just so inspired in so many ways. Makayla is such a blessing to me, I could not even put into words, and if I tried, it would take pages and pages to explain!!
With tht said, this inspiration will touch many, many more lives!! I'm a true product of my generation. An addict in long term recovery who now works in the field to help others gain or sustain recovery. Makayla has without a doubt impacted the way I interact with and support others. Amazing. Beautiful. I'm so, so humbled!

Makayla, I really appreciate how up-beat you are. I realise that you probably aren't like that all the time (you've had and will have some huge adjustments), but I think your approach to life, and the challenges that you face are such an encouragement to anyone who encounters your channel. My 11 year old got severely burned 2 years ago, and the way I approached the time in hospital, and the multiple surgeries with him at time wasn't even day-by-day, but sometimes minute-by-minute. "Right now I'm dealing with this minute. I'll deal with the next one when it gets here". It made it a lot easier to face. Bless you precious girl. Keep going! 😁

You have such a beautiful soul. You are going to live an amazing life and will bless so many people in the process! I broke c4, 5&6 almost 30 years ago as a teenager. While paralysis wasn’t a result, I had many obstacles to overcome. You are so strong and I admire everything about you! 🥰
