  • How to know if paint is water ( latex ) or oil based through this painters hack. Oil based paints can be used over both water and oil based painted surfaces, however water based ( latex ) paints can only be used over water ( latex ) based without the proper preparation . If you used the wrong paint over the wrong surface it wont stick and will bubble and peel over time. @@billshowto Last night I went around the house, with my Nail Polish Remover!
      I found out that it is all Latex which surprised me big time...
      I can't figure out why we have a half can of OIL Stain Blocking paint?
      Wishing that I had a Habitat for Humanity store close by. There is 2 water stains
      on the ceiling, but they are only the size of a silver dollars.
      Do I need to buy a new can of primer, or could I use that oil base primer for these
      two spots, if I'm going to use Latex ceiling paint?
      Big thanks!

    Thought you also have to do some kind of treatment on surface of water-based paint before applying oil-based

    Help!!! I have a question. My cabinet was painted with water based enamel. I stripped most of the paint off and sanded it. Now I want to use a high gloss oil based enamel. With kind of primer should I use? Water or oil based. The cabinet was an awful dark forrest green and I want to go white so I'm pretty sure I should prime it first. 🥰

      Oil can be used over water based paints but not the other way around without a primer 👍

    I've seen videos saying use rubbing alcohol and some saying use nail polish remover. I have crown moulding, doors and door trim I want to repaint. I used rubbing alcohol, damn near scrubbed it and nothing came off. I originally used that test to determine that I was dealing with oil. Then I tried acetone and the paint came off fairly easy. But I also saw that nail polish remover will remove oil based paint as well as latex. Now Im thoroughly confused ?? They only thing I can say for sure is I repainted my ceilings with flat latex and hit the crown moulding with the roller in some areas. That flat latex is on there really good after drying. My main concern is, I dont want to use oil on my project because of the high odor and I have a lot of trim. But I also dont want to use latex if I am going over oil and waste time and money. So...is nail polish remover removing the paint a suree bet to say I am dealing with latex even though alcohol did nothing ????

    Did you you flip which one is oil and which is latex? I assume the acetone dissolves the oil based paint, which is the bottom piece.

    • @billshowto
      @billshowto  Před rokem

      Acetone will make the surface of oil based paint shiny while on water based paints it will remove the paint much more rapidly 👍

  • @nobbystyles4807
    @nobbystyles4807 Před rokem +1

    thats simply not true, you CAN use a water based paint over an existing oil paint finish by simply using either an adhesion primer or a shellac primer first.
