  • The Story of Lake Cumberland is a 50-minute DVD that traces the origins of the construction of Wolf Creek Dam, near Jamestown, Kentucky. The dam backed up the Cumberland River for more than 100 miles to form the 50,000 acres of water that was renamed Lake Cumberland by an Act of Congress in 1952. The video features historic, color film of the building of the dam, the moving of the city of Old Burnside and the filling up of Lake Cumberland in early 1951. The video was produced by Sentimental Productions. For more information, go to: www.sentimental.cc

My Grandparents Ora Cox and Thomas Alcorn had 10 boys; some were born on Burnside Island and some were born in the lake that was the valley in those days. 2 of the boys remained in Burnside until their death. The whole family feels a special drawing toward Lake Cumberland and Burnside. Lots of memories. 1 of my uncles has a camp in Alpine. While Grandma's people also still live in the area. Burnside, Lake Cumberland and the Cumberland Falls are dear to the generations of Cox and Alcorn.

I knew an Alcorn family living in Miamisburg Ohio. Lots of southern transplants in the area, too.

I remember the time when I made the jump from 76 falls when I was around 11. It was a proud moment for me because the two older kids that were before me just stood there for about five minutes. They taunted me on their way back down (on foot) in shame, saying that I wouldn't do it and I did without hesitation what they failed to do. I got a huge standing ovation from the large crowd of boats that had congregated there. Good memories from that place!

In the video is footage of an outdoor Burgoo Dinner filmed in color in the late 1930's. The dinner was designed to allow the builders of the dam to meet the people living in the the area who would be affected. There are some good close ups of the people. Maybe you could recognize some friends or family members.

Nice job! Makes me miss the lake a lot! I'll have to look into getting the whole video. It's really neat to see the land before it was lake!

Watching this video convinced me not to go to Lake Cumberland for a relaxing vacation. What these TVA dams do to farm communities is awful. This is more like Lake of the Ozarks in Missouri than anything else.
