What is Personal Jurisdiction?
CIVIL PROCEDURE OVERVIEW: THE AUTHORITY OF THE CIVIL COURT
To have the authority to hear and decide a case before it, a civil court must have: (1) subject matter jurisdiction over the particular type of case being heard; (2) personal jurisdiction over the defendant; and (3) venue in the proper judicial district.
If any of these 3 things are missing, then the court does not have the authority to hear and decide the case before it. If the plaintiff wishes to pursue their cause of action, the case will have to be moved to a court that does satisfy all 3 requirements.
PERSONAL JURISDICTION: "MINIMUM CONTACTS"
A court must have personal jurisdiction to adjudicate the rights and liabilities of a defendant.
To obtain personal jurisdiction over a defendant, the defendant must have "minimum contacts" with the state in which the action is brought (i.e., the "forum state").
A personal jurisdiction analysis deals with the level of activity or contact with the forum state that is required by the defendant to satisfy minimum contacts and grant the court personal jurisdiction over the defendant.

Thanks for the video. I appreciate that you stay on the subject and don’t have any off-subject or useless information.
Thank you! I've had such a hard time wrapping my head around minimum contacts, you explained it so simply!
wow you do such a great job of breaking this and subject matter jurisdiction down. Exactly what you are saying is in my text but, it just didn't articulate well with me as this video did. I'm studying for my business law final and his helped thank you!
These videos are stellar! I was reading the same thing over and over again and it wasn't clicking. I'm doing an independant study program with an attorney in WA to take the bar and am not getting in person lectures. These videos are beyong helpful. suing someone is not about to recover monetary damage but to stand against wrongdoing, protest, protect, defend our reputation, so legal action is very positive tool to restore justice and peace, last couple of days I observed that people are suing each other, and different peoples have different opinion. but legal action against illegal is inherent rights.
Can jurisdiction be challenged based on lack of due process of the law, meaning no jury trial in a civil case, where the state constitution says you have a right to trial by jury?
Can jurisdiction be challenged on those grounds?
the 6th amendment guarantees a right to a jury in criminal cases only, not civil actions.
dappa311 for actions over 20 dollars you can demand a trial by jury. A jury trial and a trial by jury are two different things.
What you'r saying is that if you live in the state where the civil suite is being brought against you , the court has personal jurisdiction ?
So if I am going to court for a paternity case , what you'r saying is that the court has personal jurisdiction because I live there , work there?
yeah of course
Depends. Are you a citizen of that state? Do you presently plan to move?
how can it be construed that my being in a certain place, and at a certain time, no matter where it is, that this magically makes all this apply to me? So, just because I am in this city, right now, that the courts here have authority to decide things on, or about me? Where does that come from? I never agreed to this, or never signed a contract or anything. For a contract, all parties need to be aware of every part of every detail of any contract. Then there has to be consideration, and what exactly would be consideration of the defendant's side? That men with badges and guns will not put me in handcuffs, and lock my in a cell, or take my car or property? I am new at all this, but something doesn't seem quite right about it.
