Tap water is MORE than ok for ALL pond fish….

  • We get asked this question a lot! The answer is YES, of course you can use tap water in a garden pond especially if you need to clean your pond out. Ensure you treat it first with any decent de-chlorinator before you run it through your filter system or put your fish back in.
The most important thing to remember for any fish is to ensure the quality of the water is always in good order. By water quality we mean it doesn't need to be clear, the water has to be sufficiently aerated and to be free of ammonia/nitrite which is extremely poisonous to your fish and can also cause secondary infections or diseases.
If you have inherited a pond that is completely blocked up or you have had your pond for a while but haven't been able to maintain it properly and it is now overgrown or silted up, ideally a full clean is needed. You can't simply add a filtration system to clear your pond as it simply will not cope.
New ponds or mature ponds that have been maintained properly will rarely need a full clean. In our line of work we rarely see this type of pond as we only get calls to help the bad ones!

In the US tap water is deadly to fish. I’ve lost fish by adding it and so have two friends.

US tap water has chlorine and chloramine in it. Chlorine will dissipate but chloramine won’t. Both are toxic to fish. So, just need to use a water conditioner to remove both.

Only if you have tap water with a type of chlorine it it like ours......................it's not even nice to drink (and yes, that's the UK).
Clearing that out with a 2 stage filter before I do a water change..

I just found out my water company use another chemical added Please note the standard filter is a dechlorinating filter for Chlorine only.
You must select the Chloramine Version for USA Canada [I think ??] or if you live in an area using Chloramine (Thames Water and all of Scotland mainly in UK.
Chloramine requires a long contact time so they suggest halving the flow rate accordingly over regular chlorine.

I forgot to turn off the tap water running into pond through hose. Usually runs for 10 minutes but ran for hours. Lost 70% of my fish. I bought a dechlorinate.

Hi, please could you advise, does Dechlorinator stay in the pond i.e. I refilled our pond about 2/3rds and used Oase Dechlorinator 500ml (I didin't fill the pond right up as was worried there might be a leak). I now want to top it up, I put the Dechlorinator in a few days ago, will I need to add more Dechlorinator for the top up?
I don't know about volume, our pond is a weird shape, triangle with rounded edges, uneven sides, about 8x6x12, 2 levels, around 18inches to 2ft deep.
I understand it's difficult without knowing accurate specs, but just wondered if Dechlorinator keeps working over time? As always, any advice always much appreciated.

Don’t worry at least you put it some in. The chlorine is low generally so once diluted with the rest it will be harmless!

Strange comment, it’s a customers pond we were just asked to clean it out. 1. She wasn’t old, 2. why should she close it down - because you don’t like it?? Tbf fair it wasn’t overstocked and had some plants in which is much better for any fish than an overstock koi pond with just fibreglass for a home.
