    Did I make a mistake not buying this motorcycle? Indian Challenger test ride! After getting a proper test ride on the Challenger at the IMS show in Chicago, I was ready to come back to my local Indian dealership and give it another go! This motorcycle is powerful, properly weight distributed, and DAMN comfortable! Definitely had an enjoyable experience on this test ride!

      The bulk of Harley riders are Brand Attached... Regardless of the bike performance or reliability. Harley Davidson started The psychology of this sales approach along with the EVO Introduction... Willie Davidson himself has been quoted countless times "We are in the business of selling an image not motorcycles "... If you go back and look you see Harley no longer was going after their loyal hardcore biker market and their weekend riders... Harley-Davidson decisively made a concerted effort to ditch the nitty gritty biker riding a Harley image... The intentionally got away from the average guy working and fixing his own bike... They started targeting yuppies businessmen lawyers along with middle class upper middle class Americans.. they had to make a more reliable bike.. the idea of having a Harley Davidson and riding cross country with a few extra parts and tools in your saddlebag being able to fix anything was over.... Harley-Davidson meant to put the screws to their buyers.. they phased this in.. Harley makes a absolute killing on service side of the business. I'm sure they could make a motorcycle as reliable as a Honda.... But their strategy is make good enough that people keep buying them but still make a fortune on parts repairs and service work.. big part of the yuppie corporate strategy of Harley was moving near dealerships along interstates and appeal to the businessman that wanted to be weekend warriors and pretend bikers..... It worked!!

My Challenger arrived in March 2020 and since then it has been happiness. Bought my 2020 Challenger new from factory August 23, 2020. I have owned 37 different bikes and this is my favorite so far. No matter how many times I crack that throttle it still makes me smile. I think my 2010 Victory Cross Country is more comfortable on a really long ride. But the power this Challenger makes is awesome. Lets face it, the Challenger is the direction Victory was heading before Polaris shut them down. I am glad they did not let those ideas die.

  • @drodNY
    @drodNY Před 2 lety +5

    nice review. The throttle response on these modern fly by wire systems can easily be fixed with a proper tune. Something most Challenger owners do once they upgrade their exhausts. I traded my 2019 Street Glide Special for a Dark Horse and never looked back. Much better handling, power delivery, more tech features like rider modes, remote locking saddlebags, adjustable windscreen, lower center of gravity, etc. The sport mode really wakes the bike up.. glad you had fun with the bike.

    About the weight "feeling" much lighter, that's what the guys at Polaris do. I rode a Victory for years and it just held its weight so low that it did feel much lighter than it actually was. I test rode a chieftain a few years back and it was obvious the engineers at Indian made sure to carry that over from the Victory line. Both were also lower seat height than the comparable HD's without any loss in ground clearance, which makes it nicer for those of us stretching to get a 30" inseam.

    Re. the airflow to your legs: I noticed that the Challenger you were riding has the optional front wind deflectors mounted. Without them, you would get the same airflow to your lower extremities as on your RG. You could have those removed, but they're darned nice in cold or wet weather. Very much a personal preference thing...
    I finally got an opportunity to throw a leg over one myself just a few weeks ago... colour me impressed! I'm 5'6", with a 30" inseam, and could flat-foot the Challenger no problem in my street shoes. Just lifting it off the side stand, it seemed no heavier than a Scout. Indian really nailed the balance on this bike. Can't wait until I get a chance to actually RIDE one.

    Challenger owner here. That seat is really my biggest complaint out of my very short list of complaints. Yes it feels comfortable at first but after an hour or two in the saddle it’s so soft that it gives no support. My lower back was killing me after taking a multiple day long distance trip. After 5k miles I’ve broken down and bought a saddleman seat. We’ll see how that turns out when it gets here. My other complain is the throttle by wire. One of these days I’ll get the Lloyd’z flash and that should fix all of my complaints about that.

    Jess, soooo glad you're likin' the Injun! I was really disappointed when you didn't seem to like it much when you took one on the group ride sometime back. It seemed to me that the bike you were riding might have been in rain mode b/c you complained that the bike couldn't seem to get out of it's own way and that you were super hot riding that day. I thought that maybe there were some vents that you were unaware of that weren't opened. You mentioned that there was very little wind on your legs on this ride and I happened to notice that there were two small wings down by your knees that maybe could be adjusted to allow more airflow? But IDK. Never the less, I'm stoked that you like the Challenger so much :-)

    I’ve just purchased a 2021 Harley Road Glide special two weeks ago. I still have my 2018 BMW K1600B with little over 10k miles on it with a Brentune. My previous bikes are just to name a few recent one are 2015 BMW S1000rr/2016 BMW R1200gs/2016 BMW S1000xr/2015 Indian Chieftain 111/2017 BMW R1200RT/2018 BMW K1600GTL/2018 BMW S1000XR. Rode sport bikes prior to all these now that I’m beyond 54. Let me tell you there is northing compare to a Harley. The nostalgic and the heart beat of the rumbles from an American made V twin nothing can compare. Yes you have other brands reliable or not but not the same as Harley. I’ve tried them all, at the end if you want to cruise America and feel the heart beat of America! It’s gotta be Harley hands down. I traded my 2020 Challenger for HD RGS. The Challenger was easier to maneuver at slower speeds, the traction control was a life saver, but not many customizable options. If there where more options for a Challenger I would have kept her.
    It is a comfy seat, comfy ride. I was tiptoe being 5'2" and 160lbs. I never dropped it.
    I dropped my RGS the 2nd day but I still can't give up the RGS but I definitely wished they had a Baby.
    Challenger sounds like a time machine and rides like a Cadillac, has a lot of tech for standard model but not many options if you want to customize.
    RGS rides rougher, less tech but more color options, more customizable options, sounds like a badass. It doesn't look like a plastic bike.

    There is an aftermarket “tune” that really fixes the throttle lag that drives us all nuts. It’s from Lloydz Garage. He owns an Indian dealership in Charlotte NC, and also is a performance mechanic. Another youtuber Called “rifingfish” really talked it up so I got it for my 2020 Dark Horse Challenger. It is everything I hoped it was going to be, it really increased the response and over all performance of the bike. I’m like you in that I don’t care about the brand, I just love riding. Stay safe.

After the Dyno tune my particular bike was 93 hp and 126 ft lbs. More than enough power for me. The other reason for my choice was the cost. I told the sales rep I was looking for a touring bike but I had never riden one or even owned a motorcycle. He told me to look around and walked off, they didn't check on me or even attempted to make a sell . I walked out and not one person even said thank you for stopping by or if I had any questions. Next stop was at one of my local Harley Davidson dealerships, the sales man walked up to me i explained my experience and what i wanted . Being 6'5" 285 pound man whos built like a linebacker he understood why i wanted a touring bike . The salesman recommended a training course through Harley he went over every thing the Road Glide had , all the features and said when I finished the coarse they would be ready for me. Two months later I bought the Harley davidson road glide ultra. I can't say if Indian makes a better bike , what I can say is my Road Glide Ultra is a fricken perfect bike for me ...

    As a Victory owner, I loved my Cross Country at first sight and still do. It never gets old and the fact that it turns so many heads when I'm riding is a definite bonus. I love the look of the Challenger but at the same time, I'm somewhat disappointed in knowing that THIS could very well have been where Victory was heading. (The shutting down of Vic still stings lol) Especially seeing all of Vic styling queues and ergos that are incorporated in this model. So, I guess in that regard, Victory lives on so I can take some consolation in that. lol

      I too own a Cross Country. Fantastic bike especially after getting after a Lloyds 501 cam and his filter, putting out 113 hp and tq. It to is nimble for a large bike. The 108 powerplus was going to replace the 106. This could have been the bike to replace the Victory Vision that is an awesome bike, but did not excite people due to its looks. This 108 was going to also be in the other Victory models and a newly designed Cross Country. Glad Indian incorporated it into the Challenger, but am a bit confused why they do not offer it in other models. I sat on a used Challenger a couple weeks back at the Honda Powersports dealer in Marysville. Owner traded it for a new Honda automobile. I did not ride it but it felt great to sit on for my ergos and felt light getting off the stand.
