They wrote some original music using amplified distorted cellos the best album to hear the progression is their compilation album "Amplified: a decade of reinventing the cello" from 2006... you can hear the cello slowly go from symphonic to metal as the album proceeds

Eicca Toppinen tells at first they had this idea of James speaking the words so that they can be brought out better.Then Eicca met James in Gothenburg at Metallica weekend and told him we have this kind of an idea of One with spoken words.James said ''Why don't you ask me to do it?'' Actually, METALLICA recorded their first "S&M" double-album live in 1999, so there were 3 years late to the party, while APOCALYPTICA released their debut-album "Plays MetallicA by Four Cellos" in 1996. This version of "One" is taken from their forthcoming album "PLAYS METALLICA VOL . 2".
