    Driving through the Sveti Rok tunnel is an amazing experience, as the landscape and the feel of the surroundings is very different on the northern side of the tunnel compared to the south side of the tunnel. The sim doesn't really do it justice. You enter the tunnel in a very green landscape that feels very "mainland Europe", drive a few kilometers through the tunnel and emerge in a landscape that looks almost desert-like at times, with a lot of yellows and browns, contrasting against the dark blue sea. It's truly amazing.

    In the beginning of the briefing they mention that the cruising speed of the 172 is 129 kts. This is what they use for the speed, you can double check with the time vs distance. That why your timings are off. Really enjoy your videos, keep them coming.

    You solved a major issue for me here I think in one simple comment; I've had a problem getting my Beechcraft single engine over about 5000 feet with IFR and auto pilot etc even though air traffic control at times were asking for over 10,000 feet and I just kept falling out the sky with stall speed. Whilst I'm a renewed newbie to flight sim and I've had every incarnation over the years. I've followed the MS check lists and your flight instructions, one thing I totally ignored was MIXTURE. I just simply left it at 100% and couldn't climb. I feel naeve now but a lesson for others maybe hopefully. I love learning this thing mind.

    I don't know why they used the GPS equipped planes for two of these trips. The Sierra Nevada one in the yellow cub without it was so much more enjoyable. There's no point even having all those notes and disabling GPS on the VFR map only to have a massive map in the plane telling you exactly where you are and where to go.

      It’s a beautiful county to fly over and to drive through I’m sure. I used to go on Bing maps or Google earth and virtually visit places. Virtual tourism if you will. If I had the $$$ I would certainly travel as much as possible for the rest of my life. I grew up in the USVI and we traveled all over the Antilles in a Beech 18, and Cessna 172. It’s fun going to places I know, but more fun exploring new places, even if for now it’s a virtual trip.
      I hope they add in more bush trips like this one, or around the world trips or even just scenic flights, but I’m satisfied being able to create my own flight plans. Enjoy!

    In terms of refueling, the bigger tarmac airports have fuel trucks and fuel pumps, you're MEANT to refuel at those bigger stops and put in enough to get you to the next big airport, however it is bugged at the moment and the Truck drives over when asked (using the fuel truck hotkey) but doesn't refuel you, I've heard stopping at the pump brings up the fuel box but I havn't tried it.
    If you wanna go for realism, bind the Repair/Refuel button and ONLY use it in realistic situations like the ones mentioned above, however you can use it whenever you want, even mid air.

    Just little lesson for ya, with soft field take off, rotate at 51kts, lower the nose to stay at level attitude accelerating (using your ground effect) to your Vx (62) if you have obstacles to clear or Vy (70) if not obstacles to clear. Then bring flaps up at typically 300ft AGL and continuing climb at Vy with flaps up at 80kts.

    I finished the Sierra nevada trip yesterday, it was awesome. You don't have the glass so you definitely need the vfr map up. I got lost a few times. I'm nowhere near as accurate as your flying but I always managed to get to the strips, for the most part I was on time too, a couple were hard to see and find. But it was fun not being able to rely on the monitors.
    I never used back on track or had to reset but once or twice I thought I was going to have to. It is a bit nerve racking being 20 minutes in and not sure if you're heading in the right direction and then something becomes recognizable and you breath a sigh of relief.
    I was wondering why my headings were off a lot the time though, but I never compensated for the wind so that may have been why. I learn a lot by watching you do things. I'm rookie level.

      @Memnoch4711 Před 4 lety

      Sierra Nevada is more difficult than the other two as per aircraft choice (no GPS or autopilot) , but it is an excellent trip, no doubt. The route passes over some very interesting places (that ammo dump!!! whoa!), even though the MSFS version doesn't do it justice i.e. Big Pine area (do a Google image search!). BTW I wonder how they found all those abandoned airfields!

    • @sundaygloom8715

      @@Memnoch4711 yeah, it was a cool flight. I started with that trip because I'm from Southern California so I was familiar with and have been through a lot of those areas. It was cool to see and recognize some landmarks and roads I've been on while in the air.

    • @rajendra82a
      @rajendra82a Před 3 lety +1

      @@sundaygloom8715 The California-Nevada trip is harder to navigate, because of the lack of assistance, but I found the presence of landmarks and towns helpful. The Patagonia one has the XCub with glass cockpit, but the area is a lot more wild, and the landscape less forgiving. I am just now starting the Balkans one, but I assume it will be the easiest of the bunch because G1000 is there, and it is a settled part of Europe.

    I know the sim defaults the 172 on the runway with 10 degrees of flaps, and also I agree that normally flaps up for takeoff is best in a 172. But for a soft field takeoff, it should be performed with flaps at 10 degrees and with the yoke back to get (and keep) the nose wheel of the ground as soon as possible. The addition of flaps lightens the weight on the main gear and allows an early lift off which avoids unnecessary and higher speed travel over a rough runway surface. The plan will lift off prematurely at a slower than normal speed. Once airborne, fly a few feet above the field in ground effect until reaching a safe climb speed, then climb normally and retract the flaps. (That's how I was taught to do it.)

    I just finished the Balkans trip yesterday. Really beautiful all the way through. I find the timings to be very hard to keep up with though (in contrast with the Sierra trip, which seemed really well paced for the Cub, like 80ish knots if direct from point-to-point). I'd just mentally add 10% or more to each one for a more sane estimate.
    I do think these lend themselves really well to flying exterior view, especially since you're not going hardcore in terms of real VFR maps or anything. Context clues to figure out the roads they want you to follow (they're usually good at pointing to one obvious landmark immediately after takeoff that you can reference from), though I realize the noise may be less pleasant for video purposes. Either way, it's a beautiful trip and I hope you keep following it!
