    If you are going to quote Kipling, I suggest that you also remember that, after the war, he wrote this epitaph for the British dead: “If any question why we died, / Tell them, because our fathers lied.”

      This same Kipling also wrote in the epitaphs:
      “two canadian memorials
      i
      We giving all gained all.
      Neither lament us nor praise.
      Only in all things recall,
      It is Fear, not Death that slays.
      ii
      From little towns in a far land we came,
      To save our honour and a world aflame.
      By little towns in a far land we sleep;
      And trust that world we won for you to keep!”
      War is brutal and can be filled with regret (as Kipling had regarding his efforts to get his disabled son into the war). Nonetheless, Kipling understood like Chesterton “The true soldier fights not because he hates what is in front of him, but because he loves what is behind him.”
